  4. CZ Waveforms

I've got a pretty good idea of what square, saw and sine waves look like, but I've always wondered about the CZ waveforms in the solo synth; so I recorded a brief sample of each and took a screen shot of them in Audacity. Many of them seem a lot more complex compared to the standard synth waves, so not sure how I will use them other than choosing them for their raw sound. I would be interested in other people's observations and comments. Note that they are not all shown at the same scale.

  6. Lead Tone from Main Title of Escape From New York

The 1981 movie Escape From New York starring Kurt Russell features a synthesizer soundtrack composed and performed by director John Carpenter and the film's sound designer Alan Howarth. This is an attempt to recreate the lead sound from the main title of that film. You can hear it at about the 35s mark in this video of the movie's opening credits: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cfxpq5V7rjA

There are three required components in the zip file: a Performance, a solo-synth tone (which provides the filtering action) and a modified (user) PCM tone. Load them where you want in your XW synth and edit the Performance to point to where you stored the two tones. This tone was created on the XW-P1 but should also work on the XW-G1. If for some reason it doesn't, then the user PCM tone may be the problem. It can be recreated on the XW-G1 by taking Saw Lead 1 (P269) and changing its attack value to +50.

PS. A full description of how the emulation was crafted can be found in The XW-P1 Companion: Volume 2 - Emulation Examples.

PPS. Apparently, the file formats for some of the components are different enough between the P1 and the G1 to make this download incompatible with the G1. However, if you follow the principles used in creating it as described in both of my documents, with enough effort it should be possible to do on a G1.

  7. Joes Section

With renewed interest in my XW-P1, and after working at hex layers with the PX560-I decided to recreate-a bit old-school stylistically-a hex layer for the XW-P1 which is similar to one I have uploaded here for the PX560 already, which I divided up into zones and with slightly different instrumentation. This is a little different, the drawbars/sliders are so handy on the XW-I have programmed a trad jazz section of instruments-all layered together across the entire keyboard to be brought in and out with the drawbars. Nothing fancy as far as dynamic control from the keys-just straight through the drawbars. 1-6 are 1) flute, 2) mute trumpet, 3) alto sax, 4) acoustic piano, 5) breathy sax and 6) tremolo vibes. Sure wish I could midi the PX560 to the XW and use the XW drawbars to control levels in the PX560 hex layers-but as hard as i have studied, I do not think it is possible. There are no specific cc messages to control the hex layer dynamics in the PX560. Would be very cool if anybody AlenK maybe? Brad? Mike Martin? Would be a killer feature......maybe, somebody?? Japan-firmware update?

  12. Sundown performance patches

Two lazy-sunday patches that accompany a quick and sloppy song I did on my four track, I wanted to do some sound designing that reflex a certain kind of tune. Cant get it quiet right so I've recorded hasty that song just to hear the patches if it sound right. I've also added a solo-synth patch sexyvoice to delve deeper in the world of synth on G1 it sounds nice ).

  16. "Cars" Synth

This lead synth is from Gary Neumans song - "Cars" It is still a bit of a work in progress. If you crank the modulation wheel all the way, the sound goes all wonky. You can take it up about 1/4 of a turn to get it a bit fuller. Let me know what you think, and I'm open to suggestions on how to improve it. Or give it a go yourself with your and repost that sound. Also on the P-1 you need to play the opening sound on the highest "A' key, as A > G > D > B > G

  17. Velocity Controlled Distortion

I like my E.P.s with plenty of bark, so ...
Attached is a performance that routes zone 2 through the solo synth in zone 1. Also attached is a silent solo synth patch with the distortion DSP enabled and a virtual controller routing key velocity to distortion gain. Touch sense can be altered by changing the depth parameter in virtual controller 2. Knob 2 can be used to set the gain baseline, but there's no point in setting it very high.
Put the solo synth patch in zone 1 and whatever PCM tone you want to add distortion to into zone 2 and make sure the DSP line is on for that zone. Given that the solo synth is involved, the resonant filter is available to help tame that notorious XW distortion. This can change the character of the distortion a lot, even on the distorted guitars. EQ helps as well.
This is also useful for quickly auditioning the effect of distortion on various tones. On the G1, the multifunction key can be set up to toggle the DSP line on zone 2 to help make the comparison.

  18. Roaring Silence

My attempt at using the solo synth to create that classic sci fi effect when the camera pans down the dark corridors of a vast alien ship or when the slab orbits Jupiter - resonant filtered noise on the brink of self oscillation.
Knobs 1 and 2 turn up wailing voices a la Kubrick. (This was created on a G1 so P1 owners may need to reassign PCM oscs 1 and 2 to wave 451.)
WARNING: resonance is maxed out so keep the volume low when you first listen, especially when the wailing is turned up.

  19. Step Sequencer Rock Drums

Thought I'd share my basic drum beats for using in your step sequencer. These cover MOST rock/pop/country songs. Load them in your User files for the SSEQ. To use in a song, either load them in your Performance under Sequencers...Step Seq, or you can just select the Step Sequencer after you have your performance loaded and scroll to the User files... be sure to set your tempo just before using because that info is not saved. Oh... K=Kick, S=Snare C=Cymbal, R=Rim.

  20. Drum Mod for 4 keys

I made a drum mod to use in a performance for the lowest 4 keys on the board (C2 to Eb2). I put a kick, tick, cowbell, and clap on them. I have this on my Rock Piano performance since I sometimes use a cowbell and clap, and sometimes do the count-in for a song.
Just so you know, above the 4 keys are a few blank spaces and then the standard set continues, as well as below the C2 key. Just set your keyrangehi and low to the appropriate spots.

  22. Duophonic Emulation

Here is a simple patch to illustrate emulation of duophonic operation using the normally monophonic Solo Synth. It is able to play two pitches at once from the keyboard using oscillators Syn1 and Syn2. If you press one key both Syn1 and Syn2 play the key's pitch, as expected. If you press two keys the first one that is detected will play Syn1 and the second one will play Syn2. If you press additional keys Syn2 will play the pitch of the last key pressed while the pitch of Syn1 will not change.

While the tones used in this example are very simple there is no reason they could not be more complex with different waveforms, envelopes, filtering, etc.

This tone was created on a XW-P1 but there is no reason it should not also work on the XW-G1.

  23. Simulated Stepped Glissando

This is an example of a cool special effect that modifies a smooth portamento pitch glide between two notes into a series of discrete steps. It should work equally well on both the XW-P1 and XW-G1.  A full description of the technique can be found here.
Note that this example uses just a single oscillator with a simple sawtooth waveform. The technique can be used with any of the pitched oscillators (Syn1, Syn2, PCM1, PCM2) configured with any waveforms and with any envelopes. You can also extend the technique to the external input oscillator using an additional virtual controller.

  24. Simulated Sample-and-Hold

This is an example of a little trick to simulate a sample-and-hold effect. It uses both of the solo-synth LFOs to turn a continuously changing waveform from one of the LFOs (LFO2) into a discretely stepped version. This works on both the XW-P1 and the XW-G1. How the technique works is described here.

This example starts with a triangle (Tri) wave for LFO2. Change it to Sin, SawUp or SawDown to hear different effects. While here the stepped LFO modulates the pitch of a simple sawtooth wave it could be used to modulate anything.

  25. Phrase Selection Using Pattern Buttons

Here is an example of a technique for selecting phrases for playback using the XW synth's pattern buttons. It should work on both the XW-P1 and the XW-G1. There are two required components in the zip file: a Performance and a step sequence. Load them where you want to in your XW synth. Now edit the Performance to point to the step sequence. If you want to use your own phrases rather than the presets in the example you will have to edit the step sequence accordingly. Before editing be sure to read this post and section 5.2.2 of The XW-Companion, Volume 1 (Rev 4 or later) to understand how it all works.
To use the Performance hit the STEP SEQ button. Now press a pattern button and hit START/STOP or the optional foot pedal configured to do the same thing to start playback of the selected phrase. Most of the phrases in the example are programmed to play Part/Zone 1. However, several play a different part chosen from parts 8 to 16. Also, most of the phrases play just once but one of them is programmed to loop endlessly. Hit START/STOP or the foot pedal again to stop it.

NOTE: In order for phrases to play only once rather than repeat endlessly it is necessary to set "S.Seq NRPN" to "On" in the MIDI Settings menu; see page E-70 in the XW-P1 User's Guide or page E-82 in the XW-G1's User's Guide. This is a global setting that is not stored in a Performance hence must be enabled manually.
