  1. My Strings

A modified version of the built-in tone BriteStrings, that is filtered and thus has a softer timbre to it.

The tone BRITESTR.ZTN was saved in slot 70 under the Strings/Brass tone-group.

The stage setting MY_STRIN.ZPF also includes a GrandPianoConcert Tone on Zone 2 (Zone 1 is disabled) to play along with the strings in the phrase STRINGSC.ZPH that I have uploaded here.

  4. Flavell Horns (pad/sax/brass/keys, versatile)

    Hello everyone!

It has been a pleasure delving into the PX-5S community throughout the last few weeks - what a fantastic group of folks willing to help each other out. Thanks for having me.

On to what you are here for: the Flavell Horns stage setting 🥳🤠

The patch consists of four tones, assigned and volume-controlled by slider:
Slider 1: Choir Pad Slider 2: Saxophones Slider 3: Brass  Slider 4: Piano
There are three features of this stage setting that set it aside from other horn patches: real-time vibrato rate and depth adjustments, the ability to perform "pseudo-falls," and three separate cutoff assignments for extremely shapeable, dynamic timbres.

    1. Vibrato rate vs. depth
Slider 5 controls the rate of vibrato (fast vs. slow) while the mod wheel controls vibrato amplitude (deep vs. shallow). Slider 5 at around 090+ and mod wheel all the way up creates a brass shake. For a gentle warble effect, dial slider 5 to around 010-020 and raise the mod wheel about 1/2 of the way.
    2. Falls, scoops
The pitch bend wheel has been modified to perform comfortable falls (simply hold down a chord with one hand, and quickly bend the wheel all the way down - once all the way down, release the chord). Scoops and other pitch inflections are also very doable with the current pitch bend wheel settings.
    3. Timbre alterations/secret sauce 🙂
There are a couple more parameters that provide for a highly flexible stage setting, spanning from punchy horn sections to extremely mellow pads: Knob 1 controls frequency cutoff for Z1: Choir Pad Knob 2 controls frequency cutoff for Z2: Saxophones Knob 3 controls frequency cutoff for Z3: Brass Slider 6 controls global reverb
Slider 1 is intentionally left at 0 volume when you load up the setting because of its reverb tail. I find that it's not as suitable for more aggressive timbres that can be crafted with this stage setting; it's meant for gentler, paddy textures that can be quickly created by turning down each of the first three knobs. Generally: Knobs set to low cutoff = mellow and pad-like Knobs set to high cutoff = bright and aggressive
So there you have it! I hope you enjoy this stage setting Be sure to play around with the different sliders, knobs, and wheels before tossing it out too soon...and I would appreciate it if you left a comment down below of your thoughts.

Thank you, and have a totally tubular day.

    -Alex Flavell

  9. Away Strings

Custom Hex Tone Using all 6 layers.  Unique string sound I came up with for live use - cuts very well, has a cool, unique sound. Maintains separation of individual notes for live performance in a band.  Sample is below for mid range.  The Stage setting will have the drone bass and edited Orchestra tone for upper keybed (lowered octaves) but can edit to your liking.

  14. Philharmonic

This stage setting is inspired by, and partly based on, Kates String. It is my attempt at providing orchestral variety in one stage setting. Mixing the string tones with Sliders 1, 2 and 3 provides a range of tones from mellow to bright; adding the Orchestra tone from zone 2 gives punch; and brass can be turned on or of as required. I hope you find it useful.
The tones are: Zone 1, WarmStrings2; Zone 2, Orchestra; Zone 3, Syn-Strings1; Zone 4, BriteStrings.
    Controls:
    Knob 1: Reverb (all zones)
Knob 2: EQ High Gain (all zones)
    Knob 3: Attack (zones 1, 3 & 4)
    Knob 4: Release (zones 1, 3 & 4)
    Slider 1: zone 1 volume
    Slider 2: zone 3 volume
    Slider 3: zone 4 volume
    Slider 4: zones 1, 3 & 4 expression (reversed action)
    Slider 5: zone 2 volume and on/off*
Slider 6: zone 1 layer 6 (brass section) on/off and volume.
    Pedal 1: Soft (all zones)
    Pedal 2: zone 2 on/off
*Note: Slider 5 is set to turn zone 2 on or off in case Pedal 2 is not available. If the second pedal is available, I recommend setting Target 2 of the control to No Assign and just leaving the Volume control for the zone.
I have included a PDF that details the Stage Setting parameters.

  15. Anthem Orchestra

I made this stage setting for performing Anthem from Chess, hence the name. Slider 6 brings in the Oboe for the intro and bridge and pedal 2 brings in the Orchestra for dynamic emphasis, particularly for the triplets near the end of the piece.

Thanks to the author of Kates String for the inspiration and foundation of this stage setting.

There are two versions of this stage setting; AnthemOrchV1 and AnthemOrchV2.

AnthemOrchV1 has all sliders, except Slider 6, work in reverse i.e. moving them up lowers the value, similar to organ drawbars. This avoids the jump the sudden change in level when a slider is moved from its home position. Since this might seem unnatural for many users, I have made a second version, AnthemOrchV2, that has all sliders expect for Slider 3 (Expression) set to work in the normal mode.

The tones are: Zone 1, WarmStrings2; Zone 2, Orchestra; Zone 3, Syn-Strings1; Zone 4, GM Oboe.

    Controls:
    Knob 1: Reverb (all zones)
    Knob 2: Cutoff (Zones 1 & 3)
    Knob 3: Attack (zones 1, 3 & 4)
    Knob 4: Release (zones 1, 3 & 4)
    Slider 1: zone 1 volume
    Slider 2: zone 3 volume
    Slider 3: zones 1 & 3 expression
    Slider 4: zone 2 volume & on/off*
    Slider 5: zone 4 volume
    Slider 6: zone 4 on/off
    Pedal 1: Release (zone 4)
    Pedal 2: zone 2 on/off

*Note: Slider 4 is set to turn zone 2 on or off in case Pedal 2 is not available. If the second pedal is available, I recommend setting Target 2 of the control to No Assign and just leaving the Volume control for the zone.

I have included a PDF that details the Stage Setting parameters.

  18. 1 Key Strings and 1 Key Pizzicato Stage Settings (PX-5s)

These stage settings use hex tones to group the various size orchestral string instruments onto a single key. The left zone will be set as a major chord and the right zone a minor chord.
The major chord hex tone files are included for use in other stage settings only. They are not needed for these stage settings.

  20. Growl Solo Trumpet

MUST ADD THE MONO PHRASE ON SLOT 103 for this to work! ALSO, MONOPHON ARPEGGIATOR ON SLOT 100 may be needed.
Similar to the Growl Sax I uploaded before, this uses the Arp and Phrase Sequencer to make the keyboard monophonic. As before, I use the ring modulator to make the Growl.
Knob 1: DSP on/off (you'll want to turn it off when you first activate the sound)
    Modulation: Vibrato/Tremolo combination
Slider 1: Breath pressure (Cutoff/Volume on Trumpet)
What is still missing is that crazy Glissando you hear sometimes. Physically modeled trumpets use a Glissando on the bend up. I tried to create a phrase to do that, but no luck. I KNOW it's doable...I'm just not good at creating phrases. Maybe someone else on this board can do that?
Again, the "monophonic" effect is unusual, in that it will play the first note you hit only until you let all notes go. So, you have to play in a staccato style to really play this sound.

  21. Growl Sax

MUST ADD THE MONO PHRASE ON SLOT 103 for this to work! ALSO, MONOPHON ARPEGGIATOR ON SLOT 100 may be needed.
This is something I've been playing around with for a while, and I finally think it's good enough to share. I've been trying to duplicate the Physical Modeling technology that Yamaha has in their VL line, particularly with the saxophone.
There is one important factor to a good keyboard sax that the PX5S doesn't do, and that's being able to limit the sound to one note at a time (monophonic). I used the arp and phrase to create a pseudo-monophonic response on the keyboard. It's a little tricky to play, as if you hit 2 or more notes everything after the first is ignored. So, you have to play staccato to play fast.
I also added a ring modulation for the "growl" effect. It works pretty well on most notes.
    The most important controls are:
    - Knob 1 will turn the DSP on or off. The sound activates with the DSP ON, so you'll want to move Knob 1 when you select the sound to turn it off.
    - Modulation: The modulation has a slight vibrato AND tremolo to give a natural sound of throat vibrato.
    - Slider 1: Breath pressure (Volume/Cutoff) for sax. I added a breath sound (using Breath ASax....Breath TSax was clashing with the main TSax) that isn't effected by this slider.
The EQ knobs (2,3,4) and Sliders 4,5,6 (Chorus, Delay, Reverb) effect both the sax and breath sounds. The DSP, Breath, Resonance, and Attack only affect the sax sound (not the breath).
I'll be interested to see what some people think. I'm not sure how practical this sound is for playing live, although I was able to get a decent approximation to the sax on Pink Floyd's "Money".
Note: Since I'm using the Phraser, the keys are not velocity sensitive. That's what Slider 1 is for.

  23. Thick Strings

I needed a thick string sound. My favorite was from an old Alesis QS 6.1. So I got both the Alesis and the PX 5S together and kept adding stuff until I got what I needed, which was a stand alone sting sound. I did customize a hex layer so put it in first and everything should line up. I'm still pretty new to all this, I'll try and create the same file on the XW-P1.
