Thanks for the help. In fact we gave up and got a new one (it's my daughter who is learning, doing nicely)

We borrowed this keyboard from a neighbour, who hasn't used it for a while. a few of the black keys need hitting pretty hard to get them to sound, and in fact they are a bit low (depressed) (photo below) I'm wondering if I dare disassemble it and fix it - what is the problem likely to be and any other advice would be great thanks?
