  1. Thanks- you really helped! It still may work in a modified form. 190 seconds I can live with.
  2. Also, I guess I should be a little more open ended to make sure I am not missing something- what do you see as the G1's strengths and weaknesses?
  3. Thanks for your replies- by blending I meant assigning different samples to different sliders and altering the volume of each relative to each other in real time to create timbre blends- sounds like this is easily doable. Too bad you can only have two samples loaded on solo synth at a time though. I am not looking at this to be a high end sample player for grand pianos, etc. but more of a fun band in the box machine a la' Korg toys like kaossolator. Just to be clear, when you say "up to 20 samples on the keys at one time" you mean different samples? I am assuming so or you couldn't create a drum set. Also I am a little confused about the 19 second rule- does this mean all your loaded samples cannot exceed 19 seconds cumulatively if all were played end to end? If so, this would seem to be a far greater restriction than the number of samples. So it is not possible to load a number of wave files that together may exceed this 19 second limit? In other words, it will not store more than 19 seconds of played wav. memory? It seems like if you had a wav. atmosphere sample loaded that took 10 seconds to loop then you have consumed half of the time/space you have for samples. I want to be sure about this as I was thinking of creating background atmospheres of industrial or swamp sounds and mix shorter natural element sounds (like machine stamps or bird calls) into synth and PCM tones. It sounds like this synth is mainly geared for very short samples (drum hits, arp plucks, short loops, etc.) is this correct? I REALLY DO APPRECIATE YOUR HELP
  4. Hi XW lovers. I have a P1 and am wondering about getting a G1. The main reason for this is that I love really lightweight boards and take them around the house with me when I am hanging out with family, watching nature outside, etc. (I currently play my P1 in my lap on a rocker recliner every night while my son falls asleep in his room). But the G1 shares much in common with the P1 so the answers you give to my questions will probably make the difference in whether it is worth it. Here goes: 1. what is the sound quality of the samples? Are they played back in a noticeably lo-fi way or do they sound pretty close to the original input? 2. can you add effects to samples? I am not expecting stellar effects but some would be nice. 3. Can you edit samples in any way? Truncate? stretch? alter envelopes? 4. How well are the samples transposed within 2 octaves up and down from center? Noticeable artifacts? 5. The P1 has a molded plastic underbody which has deep indentations along the bottom and near the sides that allow me to easily grip it with one hand and carry it vertically at my side- does the G1 underbody have these same indentations? 6. How many samples can you keep loaded at one time? 7. How many seconds of total sampling can the board keep loaded before maxing out? 8. can a sample be a part of a solo synth sound? That is, can you blend samples with each other using sliders? How many max? I really appreciate any answers you can give. I already have a large number of synths so this is more a lifestyle purchase rather than trying to be my main board.
  5. One of the limits of the G-1 for the purpose you are describing is that it can't hold many samples in active memory (loaded). This is the reason i didn't buy the G-1. There are many second hand devices on Ebay, etc. that would give you more power. I think the G-1 is mainly geared to those who want to use a handful of samples and mainly play keys around them. If you want something that holds a lot of samples look elsewhere.
  6. I do know that if you turn the external osc on that it still seems to have some parameters at settings that may be affecting the external sound. But i will admit that even after tweaking these the external sound input seems a little distorted also. maybe we need to figure out what elements in the ext input osc may be affecting sound or if there are global effects/parameters that need to be tweaked. I haven't had a chance to look into this in depth but will soon. I do know that pitch changes to the external source by playing keys creates more alteration.
  7. To the OP- I understand your frustrations. Whenever I get a new board I am always looking for some of my favorite features from older board- we want it all (or like you said, just a decent piece of it all!) Still, that Casio can do some things that Roland can't. Every board has limits- but those limits can be blessings if you see them as ways to force you into new paths of being creative- all of us get too stuck in our comfort zone. I'm pretty sure you could create great music with that P-1! One thing I will add, the P-1 is so cheap you can afford to buy a multi-Fx box on ebay. I have a berringer that i got for $80- loads of FX- just patch the P-1 through it and yer in heaven!
  8. Ed, welcome to the P-1 owners club! The best way I know of to learn any synth is to just keep bressing buttons and trying things- THEN read the manual and focus on what you didn't learn. I agree the manual is not the best and is written as a collection of engineering specs almost. The synth is very complex and to hold down the printing they opted to give the most info in the least space- which leads to the diagram like way it all looks. Kurzweil still makes the best manuals- they even give you suggestions on how to use the features to create cool stuff. But it could be worse, much worse!!! Try figuring out the Korg N5ex with the manual- but get an audio engineering degree first (good luck creating performances!) I think that coming up with a list of tips/tricks is a good purpose for the users in this forum. Yes, we can wait for Mike to create videos but I personally like reading easy steps- its faster. I don't know if there is a moderator, but it would be great to have a "how to" sticky. It would also be great to have a way to share patches (this is a cool feature of Kurzweil's Mastering Vast forum). i've got so many toys i am learning (Fantom X, JX-305, Cubase, microsampler, Komplete) I have only a limited time to post tips but when summer vacation hits (I am a teacher) I will be freed up. We need to take ownership of this site- it will only be as good as we are. The P-1 is a great instrument and deserves a good set of threads that helps new users get the most out of it.
  9. Thanks Mike- I tried that and it worked. I guess its a little counterintuitive since you don't expect to have to go into menu to make a slider work when all the others work w/o doing this. Curious, why is the osc default "off"? Also, is there a way to make the default off? Does doing this cause problems with solo synth if an external source is not used? Does it affect how slider five works in other modes than solo synth? I copy this reply in the other forum for anyone else who is following this.
  10. When I hit mixer and use the part pages downwards to get to the "ext" control (just after "all" and "master") I found a volume control which, (ta da) controls the volume of the ext input. The problem is that I cannot link this to slider 5 so it can be controlled w/o going into mixer.
  11. I'll keep working on it and report if I find a breakthtough. Hopefully MIke Martin or somebody from casio will stop by and look into this. I really like the idea of using slider 5 to belnd in some non-casio sounds into solo synth- think of the nature sounds that begin "close to the edge" by Yes, or industrial sounds to set the mood of a harsher lead. There has to be a way to make this work.
  12. I have tried every mode there is- just to be thorough- including solo synth mode. The slider works as it should in other modes and in solo synth, when you move the slider, you see the ext source midi numbers increasing and decreasing- but there is no change in actual volume. Any ideas are appreciated- thanks
  13. Hello- I have a P1 and, in solo synth mode, I cannot get slider 5 to control external input volume. The volume always stays loud and I cannot decrease it with the slider. I have tried inputing the external source thru mic, audio and instrument jacks. I have gone into edit mode and checked out amp volume and other parameters (maybe not the right ones). I have tried things in performance and tone modes. Is there something I am missing? A global control of some sort? Does slider 5 control external volume in solo synth or did I get the wrong impression? Any suggestions? Thanks.
