  1. Quick update, Sam Ash is shipping a new P1 over to New Haven from one of their stores in New Jersey. I'll do an even swap on Saturday: their functioning unit for my non-functioning one. We couldn't find a serial number on my P1 anywhere when we looked. Is that normal?
  2. It's not a dealbreaker for me, but behind my eyeballs I find it kind of peculiar that an audio file has to be converted to 42kHz in order for the XW to be able to use it: 44.1 is an industry standard, after all. I'm curious as to the thinking behind that design decision.. did the engineers think that we wouldn't need or want full CD quality, or were there limitations placed on the sample rate by the underlying hardware?
  3. I'm not sure, but I think it probably has something to do with the My Media button that appears next to the smiley icon when you reply to a topic. Can't remember whether it also appears when you start a thread, although I'd put a buck on it. As to how to get the attachment up to the server, I'm still sussing that out.. not used to this forum software yet.
  4. I thought that might be the case. I did notice the CONTROLLERS section on the G1 for about a second, but that was just about the time the P1 went south (q.v.). I'll futz with that and continue to cram the MIDI Spec PDF.
  5. Thanks for your attention Mike.. I was going to just trundle the thing back to where I bought it and see whether they could replace it with a different unit from another store. As I've got gigs coming up I'd like to try that first. If they can't give me satisfaction, may I hit you up then via PM? Either way I will let you know here what transpires.
  6. Thanks for that sir.. yes, I downloaded all the PDFs I could lay hands on (or my mouse). The MIDI Specs look comprehensive enough—I was hoping to get this thing up and running for the gigs this weekend, so I was relying on the manual to tell me what I needed to know (it didn't). But at this point it looks like this rig isn't going to be ready for the weekend's music making activity. Then again, the P1 is currently completely hosed after a run-in with the Mac firmware updater, so my energy is probably going to be spent getting that replaced tomorrow. Peculiar that the G1 updated without a hitch though... can't even blame it on Mercury retrograde.. *shrug*
  7. And I would try that.. except that now the bloody thing won't even power up. I disconnected the DC power, reconnected it, and tried the three-fingered salute with the Edit and Write buttons, and I get a blank screen that fades out after about two or three seconds. I think it's pretty well hosed. It's going back to Sam Ash tomorrow. Sadly, this was their floor model. I'm wondering if one of their other local stores can replace it for me.. and then try the Windows version with that one. We shall see.
  8. So I had a bit of an issue applying the firmware update to my brand spanking new XW-P1 and went off to The Googles in search of any information regarding performing a hard reset on the unit. I didn't quite find what I was looking for, but I did find this thread over at Harmony Central: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/archive/index.php/t-2900825.html .. which ended with an end user mentioning that he was having the same problem with his P1 back in May that I'm having now, six or seven months later: the update (which I initiated from my MacBook Pro) hangs in the middle of update mode, and come hell or high water I can't get the thing back into any kind of performance mode. What I saw of the thread ended with Mike advising that he was going to ask the folks at the mothership to take down the P1 updater for the time being. Whether they ever did or not, I don't know. But I'd just like to report that it seems still to be an issue.. and that I still don't know how to perform a hard reset on the P1.. nor am I certain that this would help matters any, at this stage of the game. Yeah, I read the disclaimers and agreed to the terms before I downloaded the updater.. so I have to assume at least some of the liability here. But in my own defense, shouldn't I expect that Casio has a certain responsibility here too—that if they're telling me to update my firmware in order to ostensibly add functionality and fix the odd bug, that the updater itself wouldn't cause any issues such as that which I'm experiencing now and which others have experienced in the past? I mean, shouldn't it just work? As it is, I'm staring at a screen that says Update Mode, has six of the bars to the right of the screen fully loaded and a seventh almost empty, and there it sits, meditating and ignoring me and the rest of the outside world. It's resolutely not making any music. OK, rant over.. so, ahem, do I need to find a Windows box and apply the update from there? Or am I letting myself in for the same thing on that side of the OS wars?
  9. I was gonna say "long time, first time", but it really hasn't been that long.. I walked into Sam Ash earlier today hoping to walk out with a couple of M-Audio keyboard controllers and walked out instead with an XW-G1 and an XW-P1 for several hundred dollars less than I would have spent on the Axiom 61 Pro boards I had my eye on. So, er, yay, me. I'm running into an issue in the process of getting these beasts to talk to MainStage—which I'd like to be able to do as I have a few soft synths that I tend to go to quite often in context of a live performance. First, I'm not clear on how to go about sending MIDI program changes from MainStage to the two units. Maybe I'm daft, but the PDF manual didn't really help me understand this at all—but it's entirely possible I missed the relevant information. Second, I'm trying to program the assorted knobs and sliders so that I can control certain things through MainStage—for example, controls on my soft synths and effect plugs. For example, I create a knob object and tell MainStage to listen for incoming data from the relevant Assignable Knob on the P1. What it hears is a single MIDI value—127—and I can't seem to make it hear 0 through 126. The drop-down in MainStage's Inspector doesn't seem to want to allow me to turn that into a continuous controller, or the P1 isn't sending CC data, or something. I'm lost here. I've just downloaded the firmware updates, and maybe these add features that I didn't have when I unboxed the units, but at the moment I'm just trying to get myself acclimated to the way Casio is doing things and how best to integrate that with my laptop for live shows (and, of course, I have three coming up this week). Anyone using MainStage successfully with the XW boards? Thanks in advance.
