MIDI Designer XW: Now Available

Downloaded. Looks VERY nice and really shows how many dang parameters there are in the solo synth engine. But...I don't see any Virtual Controllers. Did I just miss them or are they really not there? If they are missing I'm going to guess that it's because everything this editor does is through NRPN whereas editing of the virtual controllers requires a deep dive into Sysex.

Hi Mike,

In all the excitement over the release of this fine app, I forgot to thank you for all the hard work you undoubtedly did to make it happen. I also wanted to commend you on the release video. It's the most professionally done XW video starring yourself that I have seen. And you really are a natural at this sort of thing, at least that's the impression this video sends out. (If it took a few takes to get there who cares? :))

PS. You would have to release it JUST before I went on the road myself! So I haven't actually been able to use it yet with the P1. I should have a chance next week, however. We'll see how long it takes me to upload some hopefully bitchin' solo synth patches. :o

Thanks Alen,

I've spent way to much of my own money on camera gear over the last year.  :)

We're actually already working on an update.  Based on some of my requests during the design process, the team at MIDI Designer is implementing several new changes that really step the user interface up on this application to a new level.  Screen shots coming soon.

David,

The Android platform doesn't do MIDI very well.   I suppose it possible that one day that apps like this will be available on the Windows tablets but nothing is planned.

They should do it up for Windows now. By the time "one day" rolls around the XW will probably be long gone. Not being cross platform in todays tech world is ridiculous. It cripples usage for the Windows people that have purchased an XW. Windows users who may want to purchase an XW may not because of this. Not everyone wants a bite of the big $$$$ "Apple".

I love my XW, but it really bums me when a company comes up with something great and then limits it to a particular platform.

Mike, you and Casio have done some wonderful work on these instruments, I hope you keep it going in that direction.

They would have to write it from scratch I'd think- are there any Windows programs that allow you to layout a screen full of MIDI controls?

There are at least 5 on the iPad, and casio was able to pick one and customize it relatively easily (not to discount the work that went into this). I think it would be a large undertaking to make a free, touch sensitive controller for a relatively small number of users.

Also, there is already a great cross platform editor available....

Comparing the ipad/XW-P1 combo to the Arturia Lab in this context seems strange. The ipad is being used as an editor for the solo synth on the XW and the Arturia is a controller being used to control soft synths.

Also, does Casio really need PC editors for ALL their keyboards? Casio makes PC and Mac editors for the XW series and the PX-5S.
What other casio keyboards need an editor? The SA-76?  <_<

A step in the right direction but not being an ipad owner i bought a midi controller and downloaded a bunch of freeware synths instead of buying a Casio Hardware synth.

Casio needs to make PC software like this for ALL their keyboards or peeps will take their wallets elsewhere.

As one of the many users of the site who is a happy iPad owner, enjoying the numerous excellent synths and MIDI apps available to us for practically nothing, you sound like you may just be jealous.

MODS, when you delete posts and edit others, it just makes the conversation even more nonsensical...

Maybe this info is already posted somewhere around here, but which ipads are compatible with the Casio midi designer, first generation, second generation etc? and I've already seen the ipad mini is compatible. Not being familiar with Apple stuff, do these ll use the same port or interface and interface device? Thanx.

Hi, apps depend on iOS version and not on models. For sure it works on iOS 7 to 8.3. First generation iPads have iOS 5. I think midi designer pro runs on ios5 so it will work on these old iPads. All iPads require a camera connection kit to bridge the USB port to the old 30 pin port or the newer lighting port.

5 years later.....since someone is developing a Midi Designer Pro front-end for the PX560, I have renewed interest in the app, and still have my XW-P1 so repeating my question from 5 years ago-although midi designer has ramped up its features in the last few years-which version ipad will run the pro version 2.0-which ios OS does this need? if apple is like android re OS versions-it is virtually impossible to update and android OS on an old android tablet or phone, which i have no interest in trying anyway. have lived through that nightmare. I can't afford a 3rd computer platform with a brand new ipad, but can probably can afford an older  if I know who is already using midi designer pro 2.0 on whatever ipad you have it working successfully. Thanks. 19.99 is a pretty affordable piece of software, and what the heck-I already have around 6 Android tablets, 6 android phones, and myriad Windows/Linux laptops all over the house and beyond. One more platform won't kill me-well it might.

And for all you Windows music freeks (I am unfortunately since DOS 3.1 I am older than dirt) I just discovered a rather amazing dinosaur windows tablet-i have 2 i purchased used but like new. Called Tabletkiosk-beautiful 12" color touchscreens-i have Windows 7 Home premium on both-32-bit but runs every piece of music software I've thrown at it. Had never heard of these until this past year-similar to the older Motion Windows tablets but these are faster and come with Atom processors or Intel and use SSD drives. Mine came with only a 60GB but that's enough for now.  if interested in more info, post back. Even though these are now extinct mostly-their customer service rep actually responded to my email, there is still tech support for these, amazingly. maybe not an iPad, but for a windows tablet, fits nice on my Privia music stands-not too heavy for these.
