Tutorial: how to install PX-5s downloaded files

Recommended Posts

This is a tutorial covering how to load tones that were downloaded from the Casioforum site.
I couldn't find instructions anywhere on how to do this. It took me forever but I figured it out. The user manual only shows how to get the USB stick to work on the board, Make sure you put the files in a MUSICDAT folder before loading it on the USB stick. You can make the MUSICDAT folder on your Computer or by formatting the stick on the keyboard.

You can find the files after inserting the stick in the keyboard and holding the media key down, then hitting Load/Enter, Stage Settings/Enter and the +- buttons. Then hit the > button and then +- again, get numbers like 0-3, 2-4,etc (which are the stage settings,so select where you want the new ones to go), press enter/"replace"/yes, and get "complete!" This overwrites existing Stage settings in that spot so make sure you really want to replace them. There is a list of all the installed stage settings on this forum somewhere and on the Facebook page.
To find your newly installed stage settings, press the Bank button first, then press the bank number and then the number within that bank (e.g. 0-5, 2-7, etc.)

When i try and load stage setting from my usb it does the mounting media....

then it comes to a screen which says

Audio Select

No File

Delete

pressing load/enter or any other button does nothing. except exit which leaves the screen and returns to tones. It is formatted and I put the files in the music dat folder. I have updated the firmware using that usb before so i really dont know why this is happening

Common mistake. Instead of just pressing the MEDIA button, you need to PRESS AND HOLD the MEDIA button to get to the DATA LOAD screen.

Do you know how to load the alternate order stage settings file from a usb onto the px-5s? the keyboard won't read/recognize it when I press load all data or load stage setting in the media menu. just says no files. but i just saved an all data from the keyboard to the usb and it can see that when i do the same thing....

Same problem here-I am formatted correctly-I have the right folder-I hold the media button till the Data load screen comes up- I choose load and "no File" still comes up---this is the same USB thumb drive I update the 5s software with no problem--

Same Problem as Scott Hamlin above: just Purchased the board and tried to upload the 6 Draw Organ tone. When using the usb, although I updated the Firmware ok, I formatted the usb and did everything by protocol as best I could, the Keyboard says "no file" when I try to download the tone from the usb.

The usb also is fat32.

I also do not suced in using the Editor, which I can download but then i cannot find anything.

Anyhow I woudl prefer to use the usb.Is there anything I could try?

Thank you in advance for any ideas on this.

Problem solved. I thought the 6DrawBar file was to be loaded as "tone". When I tried to load it as "StageSetup" it worked. Beautiful organ!

Updating the firmware should be very simple. Put the update.bin file on the USB drive. Don't put it in any folders on the USB drive, leave it at the top (root) level. Insert the USB drive in the PX-5S and turn it on. The PX-5S should see the update.bin file and start the update automatically.

It may be easier to format the USB drive on the PX-5S, especially if you use a Mac. The PX-5S uses MS-DOS (FAT32) format, though a Mac can format that as well as read and write to it.

Hi Joe thanks for the reply. I do use a Mac, i did format usb drive on the PX-5S first and got MUSICDAT file but then wiped the usb drive so now when i put it in the PX-5S all i keep getting is error no media file, so do i need to reformat again or have i somehow buggered the usb, because the display doesn't say mounting like it did before. Can you update the firmware by using a usb cable straight from the computer into the PX-5S? thank again Gaz.

Hi Joe sorry i haven't replied sooner i have tried to reformat my USB drive in the PX-5S but not even getting the option to scroll down to format, all i'm getting is error no media, i think i will just buy another USB drive and try that thanks for all your help have a good new year.

gaz.

I've had similar problems with specific USB thumb/flash drives, and managed to solve the issue this way... In your desktop or laptop operating system, use one of the disk wipe functions of the OS utility set. E.g., in Mac OSX you'll find the erase and reformat functions in the Disk Utility in the Utilities folder within your Apps.

By reformatting the USB drive from scratch using a basic FAT format you will then recreate the basic hidden files and structures that the PX5S is looking for when you insert the USB into the keyboard. In many cases I've found that there's nothing wrong with the USB drive in physical terms, it was just a "logical" glitch that was corrected by using this procedure.

I've successfully done this for Casio and Roland equipment when they fail to recognize some storage media and it's usually successful (and cheaper than going to buy yet another USB that will develop the same problem over time anyhow).

Tip: Always keep more than one backup of your essential data ... whether that's an extra USB drive or just copying your key data files to a hard drive somewhere else ... those USB thumb drives that get used a lot are prone to getting a byte or two out of whack and then your musical devices don't recognize them anymore ;-)

Hi to OneWatt i have just read your reply, i erased my USB drive last night ,and have managed to re-format the said drive, so i've got the MUSICDAT folder showing but i still can't update the firmware it will not do it automatically. When i go to sys setting scroll down to update firmware and press enter i get mounting media on the display, so i left it for 40 minutes and it was still mounting media so i really don't know what to do now, is this firmware update really essential? if not i'll leave it. I have downloaded extreme synth so i'll try and load that. thanks for all your help.

That's odd ... if the PXS5 is recognizing the USB flash drive but not upgrading to the latest firmware, this sounds like more of an upgrade procedural issue.

Is this particular USB drive working for other purposes, besides trying to upgrade the firmware? I'm assuming the answer is yes, but if not, you're USB flash drive may still not in shape to handle the upgrade process so check/correct that issue first.

Next, may I assume you're confident that: (a) you've got a good latest copy of the firmware upgrade bin file, and (B) you have placed the file in the proper location on the drive (the root location, not a folder, as Joe highlights above)? Although upgrading is fairly straightforward you do have to follow those procedures very specifically for it to function.

The upgrade is fairly short (process takes a few minutes) ... not 40 minutes, so it's not your lack of patience that's the problem here.

Finally, as for whether the upgrade is worth your trouble, I can't speak to that question as I don't know which version you've currently got and what's in each subsequent release, but you can probably find that out by reading the posts from Casio's team about each upgrade since the one you now have loaded.

If it were me, I would definitely want to upgrade no matter what and wouldn't let what's probably a small simple glitch get in the way. My US$0.02.
