Can't make it? No worries! The clinic will be recorded for on-demand playback.

ps. I am posting in "General" because Mike will also have an XW there and we will probably have some discussion there as well.

Nice! If he's taking requests, I wouldn't mind seeing the song sequencer function demo'd for the benefit of a total newb who hasn't used any sequencer before and doesn't understand the the relationship between channels, 'the bank select msb'  and the 'program change' parameters. I was messing around with it today, trying to follow a couple of posts on the forum. I've sort of figured out some stuff but I'm not quite getting the channel part, how to choose tones and what is and isn't possible. From what I could grasp, you can set-up 8 different tones on 8 tracks in the sound mixer section and then in the track edit section, you can apply those tones to 8 phrases per row (whether they are the same phrase per not). Those phrases can repeat up to 99 times and you can have 999 rows. So it seems the song sequencer can actually out-put more sound than the board can playing live. I wasn't understanding why the method of choosing the tones was different to either the standard way or the way in the hex layers or how it worked.

Thanks for the clinic Mike & Tom. Great show!

It was me asking the hard questions BTW

If anyone wants to have a stab:

Two different types of Arpeggios

I was just wondering why there are the two different types of arps. With one of them you can't edit as many of parameters.
I'm guessing it's because some arps are more complex than the arp editor would facilitate to program them, so these arps are hard coded in.

The bank button

The other thing I was wondering about is the bank button.
It seems to have a few uses if you hold it for different things, just wondering if there is a list.

I know if you select a default phrase and hold it, it will select the tone that best suits the phrase which is great.

I think it also performs a kind of reset too.

I was messing around making  pedal1 do different things by scrolling through the list quickly, pressing the pedal up and down and noticed some of the effects I scrolled through sort of remained if I didn't turn them off by depressing the pedal before I scrolled to the next one.

I guess I was confusing the engine.

But holding bank seemed to reset the stage setting.

I was just wondering if that's its function and what else it might do.

Because when I was on stage setting 5-3 and I pressed the bank button, it changed the tone on zone 1 to something else.

EQ

Only other thing I was wondering about but didn't ask because it was too long was something I noticed when I was playing with stage setting 3:3

I tried to turn off knob 1 for zone 1, which is Low Gain EQ but knob 1 still seems to affect zone 1 even when it's off.

Is this because it's set to an EQ control? or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I've tried this on other stage settings with all the EQs and I think the same thing happens.

Deleting a tone

oh, and last thing: I was wondering whether its possible to delete a phrase/user tone etc. I think you just have to overwrite them.

Song sequencer demo

Finally: I think it would be great if someone made a video showing how to use the song sequencer, say playing a phrase using a hex layer over a drum loop phrase. It's probably because I haven't used any sequencer before but I'm not understanding the 'channels', 'bank select msb'  and the 'program change' parameters and what their relationship is.

  • 1 month later...

Well I'm going to answer a couple of my questions myself.

Been having a hard time getting my questions on this forum lately :)

As for deleting a tone, it is possible. I was thinking you could just overwrite one but there is a way and I actually remember knowing about if before too as I think Mike even mentioned it in a previous video:

Just go to sys settings > initialise > initialise tone, select your tone and the job is done.

As for EQ controls. They are a global control so it doesn't matter if you align EQ settings to the knob controls and then turn off those knobs off for a particular zone. EQ will affect all zones at the same time, not matter what.

Hey, Scotty !

What ever happened to the on-demand download for the XW On-line Clinic of 06-17-2014 ?  Larry asked about this over in the XW General Discussion Forum on 06-20-2014, but he never got an answer.  I can't find it either.  I'm posting this here, as I am probably going to miss this one also, and so will be looking to download this one and the 06-17 XW clinic.

Thanks !

Regards,

Ted

Many thanks, Scott !

My error.  I thought the "casiomusicgear" link you gave was just for the "live" broadcasts.  That's great.  I would rather get it from there than from YouTube, anyway.  I use YouTube, but am not a really big fan of it.

Got a bag of Pop Secret all set to go into the microwave, but since I am on a Hughes Satellite system with limited download allowance, except for the 2AM to 7AM "free download" period, it will be a little while yet.

Then I will make a whole night of it.
