fender rhodes

Recommended Posts

WK7600,

i'm wondering, which of the E piano sounds is closest to the fender rhodes (riders on the storm) sound. as they cant say 'hammond' or  'leslie' and they say 'drawbar' and 'rotary' to get around that i'm wondering if they have the fender rhodes in mind with the '60's E piano '

i've never played a fender rhodes maybe there isnt just one sound, and they have lots of sliders and knobs to change the sound.

i played around for ages before i found a sound suitable for 'tainted love' ended up layering two synth sounds, is this what everyone does or is there some sort of info/database somewhere with details of pads and voices for what the origional musicians used in the songs?

I think this site will give you just about all the info you want on the FenderRhodes (Rhodes) pianos.  Be sure to check out all the tabs at the top of the page:

Once you have digested all of the above, be sure to go to this page of their site to hear some great examples of Rhodes sounds.  In particular, listen to both the Herbie Hancock Sides A and B.  Not only are the example sounds great, his anecdote about his first encounter with a Rhodes is terrific.  The mp3 files give not only the Rhodes "sounds", but are also good examples of the styles in which they are intended to be played.  Rhodes' weren't played exactly like a real piano, just like a clavi is played with a particular style and so is a Wurli.  I suggest downloading all the examples for future reference (I have !), listen to them all, and then go back through them and compare them with the various e-piano sounds on the WK-7600 and make your own decisions on which ones sound most authentic to you.  Don't forget, if a WK-7600 sound is "close, but not quite", you can try tweaking it a bit and save it as a User Tone when you are satisfied with it.

If you do download the examples, be sure to go into the "files" labeled "jrf, jz, mk, olivier, and rc".  Those are actually sub-folders that contain yet more examples.  As a matter of fact, I think most of those are probably the best examples of the bunch.  In some of those, you will need to go 2 or 3 sub-folders deep to get to the actual mp3 files.

Many thanks for bringing this subject up, else I might never have gone looking for this great info.

Good luck !

Ive never played a Fender Rhodes but Im a bit obssesed with it.I think the closest sound int he Wk7600 would be the Vintage EP. Then go to tone editor and try to make it sound to your taste as there are not 2 fender rhodes that sound the same.In that matter its like a grand piano, there are not 2 that osund the same. And people often use amps compressors. It has a vibrato feature and people use analog effects like wah wahs and then again there are several models.Suitcase stage...

If you are interested I can give you my settings for theuser tone Ive created and see if you like it. It doesnt sound quite like a rhodes cause that analog warmth and body is difficult to achieve in a middle line keyboard, but its fairly close

The iLectric app nails it -- and I use that IK Multimedia with the iRig Keys Pro but haven't yet figured out how to get it working with the WK (7500)

brattonken -- are you using the app with the WK ???
