sohaibaslam
Hello All,Sam here from Dubai (UAE). I recently bought a Casio WK-6500 (on a really good price : 130 CAD) from a street shop (not any big store) in Canada and took it down here. Its probably not brand new, but looks very new and runs well - however, only for about 6/7 minutes and then powers off itself. When we turn it back on, it again runs fine only for about the same time and then powers off again. Naturally, I am scared to keep it running this way that I might be risking a burn off. It ran for the first two three days long enough perfectly well, making me happy about the deal. But for the last 2/3 days, this problem has started to worry me. I've tried plugging its power supply in different wall sockets, tried changing the 3-plug adapter but haven't yet tried replacing the power adapter itself, partly because this specific purpose-built (presumingly factory-supplied) adapter may not even be available here in Dubai. My son is very excited to have this keyboard but is unhappy for its frequent jitters. Has anybody else faced this problem? Any pointers on how to start troubleshooting this? Thank you and cheersSam. Display Name
Hi Sam and welcome to the Casio forums. That model will also run on 6 "D" cell batteries. I would try running it from battery power and see what happens. If it works beyond the 6-7 minutes you will know the problem is with the adapter. Conversely, if it turns off after a short while you will know the issue is with the keyboard. Let us know how it works out!
Jokeyman123
Do you have auto power off enabled? it can be set to turn the keyboard off after 6 minutes so as not to waste power from the batteries although its not supposed to turn off for 4 hours when plugged into a power adapter. Since you say it is shutting off after 6-7 minutes this sounds like auto power off. if you have the manual, disabling auto power off is detailed on page E-13 and 14. It may be responding as if running on batteries but i'm just guessing. If the power supply is not the correct Casio supply and is supplying too much or not enough current or voltage, it may be overpowering or underpowering the WK and it is shutting down before it destroys the WK or itself (the power supply). Another possibility is to re-initialize the WK. Page 101 in the manual details this. If the WK somehow has stored auto power off settings as if running on batteries, this should clear it. Get back to the forum and let us know if any of this works.
Vorbis
The keyboard just might have batteries leftover from a previous owner. Did you look to see if batteries are installed?
sohaibaslam
OK Folks, here is a little update. Unfortunately much to my horror, the problem seems to be with the keyboard. I tried running it on the recommended batteries (Eveready Super Heavy Duty) and the jitters are even more frequent (2-3 minutes). Scott - Thank you for the heads up there. I honestly didn't think such a big keyboard can run on batteries too.JokeyMan - AutoPower is off and the keyboard turns itself off even when playing : which should not be the case with AutoPower. But hey, thanks to you I learnt a feature Vorbis - Thank you for the pointer, but the battery compartment is empty. Finding someone to actually fix this thing here (in Dubai) will be a wild goose chase. Sigh !

Contact this company, they are the Authorized Service Providers for Casio Musical Instruments. ESAG Building, P.O BOX 3426, DUBAITel:04-3367999Fax:04-3360483 Let us know how it works out. I like to informally track issues like this in case they come up again.
sohaibaslam
Thanks Scott.I just re-initialized the keyboard using the procedure given on Page E-101 of the manual. As of now, the keyboard is running for about 35 minutes (on batteries) and no shut off !I googled into an entry of WK-3000 to find out that re-initialization actually solved some problems for someone else. To add to my misery, this section of re-initializing the keyboard isn't even indexed on this keyboards manual ! Its 2.55 AM now and I will catch some sleep before work tomorrow. I will test it out on AC power and report back. P.S. Thanks for the address above. They are an electronics chain here (Jumbo Electronics) and lack technical capabilities to fix things. I've had bad experiences.

Jokeyman123
Sometimes...........I state with caution....a keyboard will store its settings (or malfunctions) in its operating system in any components that can store voltage and current-capacitors do this and so do some ICs-including the RAM in the WK I would guess since it holds your edited work (sounds, assorted arrangements etc.) If re-initialize made some difference try it again. Also, make sure you keep the AC adapter and batteries disconnected from the XW for at least a day as this can be sending trickle amounts of voltage and current in the WK, and keeping whatever software malfunction that may be causing this stored in the WK. I'm guessing here but might work. I've done this with other keyboards with some success. Again, make sure the adapter is the correct one-I have known older Casios to be very finicky with power supplies although your batteries should have fixed that problem. Operating with the wrong supply (if it is wrong) could have thrown off settings for auto-power off, may seem unlikely but without schematics in front of me, it is possible. And since you've had some success this might be. As a last DIY if your Casio ius not under warranty although I don't think this could harm anything as long as your power adapter is disconnected, try connecting the positive and negative battery terminals together with alligator clips and a single wire (a jumper wire) which might provide a kind of "cold boot" to the WK. I restored an older keyboard workstation like this successfully that would not boot up properly. Good luck, hope this helps.
