two layer tone in step sequencer mode

Hey guys, I somehow have a combined tone when I select a tone to play in step sequence mode.  Any tone I choose in tone mode is combined with the pure organ tone when I switch to step sequencer mode.  I noticed now when I first turn on the synth, that the pure organ tone is already on the screen no matter what the last tone was selected when I last turned it off.  It used to display the first synth tone always when I first turned it on.  I must have performed some step by chance to get these dual tones in step sequence mode and would like to get rid of the dual tone with pure organ tone now.  I admit that I explore the capabilities of the synth by chance as I just can not seem to understand the manual.  Thanks for any information!  Bill

I think this may be a bug in the operating system as mine has done the same thing intermittently. Since in sequencer mode the XW is only supposed to be capable of playing one tone at a time from the keyboard I can't recall any function that allows for playing a layered tone from the sequencer unless you select a hex layer specifically and this only works on mixer channel 14 in sequence moded.  And the XW-P1 is supposed to revert to whatever mode it is set for under "settings"/ "general" when you power it up.

I have had to re-initialize mine when this happens, although sometimes it corrects itself for reasons I can't understand. Try changing to several different sequences to see if it clears. If it doesn't, look at page 71 in the manual to reset the XW-P1 to factory settings. This will erase any tones, performances or other edits you may have created and saved yourself from within the XW, but will not delete any data saved on the SD card. Anyone else here who has a better explanation correct me if I am wrong as I've run across this weirdness too, and still am not totally clear about why it happens.

The XW is pretty complex, hang in there. This forum has much info not clearly explained in the manual that many of us have struggled to "decode", it is listed under the "faqs' posts kindly compiled by happyrat.

Thanks for the reply...it definitely has the organ tone with whatever other tone picked when switched to the step sequencer...I have some tweaked tones saved in open slots that I would not like to lose...would a factory reset eliminate these?  Thanks

Yes it would. You can save everything including all your edits to your SD card if you have one. Page 76/77 describes this procedure. Again go to settings, card utility and save all using the enter key. Now you can initialize the XW, all your factory sounds, performances and sequences will still be there but user slots will be empty. Now load the "all" file from the card back to the XW after you intialize it. Make sure you format the SD card in the XW first before you do anything-a standard SD computer formatted card will not have the necessary folder and disk structure needed by the XW. Let me know if this works.

Mike Martin, if you happen to read this, could you verify if this could be a bug in the OS as I'm not sure it is and I've managed to get this to on certain sequences too. Or is this just a function I don't understand correctly?

I tried changing to different sequences and it cleared up...seems like I tried that before with no success...there was something in the display with either the pure organ tone...or the specific sequence...I cant remember...but your suggestion made me look more closely at the display and I somehow removed it.  There really is some quirk there...actually quite nice if you could do it on demand...the pure organ tones combined with the xw synth bass sound was a really nice solo mode...using the sustain pedal the organ overtones would sustain after the initial synth base tones...especially jumping the base several octaves...
