IPAD use with the Privia Pro PX-5s

Hi everybody,

As new as I am with the PX-5s I don't find much on the net about the possibilities when connected to an Ipad.

I bought aleady the USB to lightning connector , but I am very curious what I can do with my Ipad air.

I suppose I can use it as a controller , so then what software do I use and how  ?

Is it possible to use th Ipad as a editor ?

What about the midi sounds available on iTunes , are they compatible and do I need to install anything extra on the Ipad.

Any suggestions are very welcome !

Greetings from Belgium.

Henri

Hi Henri. You can do many things with an iPad and the PX-5S. First, you can use the PX-5S to control synths that reside on the iPad. I highly recommend downloading the free Camel Alchemy app. If you like it you can upgrade it in various ways, but the free app is enough to get you started.

You can also use the iPad as a DAW to record audio and/or MIDI from the PX-5S.

Also see http://priviapro.wordpress.com/2013/12/04/privia-px-5s-layout-for-midi-designer-iphone-and-ipad/ for  a MIDI designer template for the PX-5S.

I suggest joining the iPad Music group on Facebook as well https://www.facebook.com/groups/Ipadmusician/

Welcome to the wonderful world of iOS music making!  :)

Anyone know any good android apps to work with the PX5s?

There are some nice recorders and drum machines that will work great with the PX-5S, but as far as MIDI synth apps they are few and far between. The main issue is latency and the sheer number of versions of Andoid. While the latency issue seems to be getting addressed at some level, the fact that devs would need to make the app work across several droid platforms is a problem.

If you are serious about using a tablet to make music, my advice is to bite the bullet and invest in an iPad. With just the free synth apps out there, it more than justifies the cost. Again, check out the Black Friday deals. You can get an iPad mini for a great price.

Scott would you mind answering the above question please, as you seem to be the expert on this aspect of operations.

Thanks

I thought I did LOL! Anyway - there ARE plenty of  Android music apps out there but, again, the iPad is where it's at for tablets. If you are still interested in android music apps check out: http://www.musicradar.com/us/news/tech/the-best-android-music-making-apps-in-the-world-today-276167

I was looking into getting an iPad for using with the Px-5s.  There are a few models out there new and old.  Which one should I go for?  Should I go big or small or used or new?  Suggestions?

Ah Brad! Finally coming around! LOLOLOLOL - Well as long as it's not abused a more powerful used model is better than a new less powerful one. I like the mini for portability and it fits well on the pad of the XW and PX-5S - plus it is cheaper. So a lot of this is personal depending on what works best for you. I would advise you (and anyone else) interested in iPad music to join the iPad Musician Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Ipadmusician/

You can get lots of help and advice on iPad apps for music there.

Sorry Scott - I meant above that one...timing of the post. My q was : Just to clarify something - can iPad mini VSTi apps be controlled by using only a LIghtning to USB cable  even so I should have writen can the PX5 control an iPad via a lightning to USB ('B' connector) cable alone, but it appears that the CCK (or other device) is still needed.

Ah Brad - you are beginning to see the light! :) Size definitely matters with iPads - so get as much memory as you can. Second hand should be fine as long as it works ok. They seem to not go wrong in my experience (and if anyone can make things go wrong, it is me - as you know.....), so perhaps the warranty is less important than for other electrical things. I have an old iPad 1 with a cracked screen which is still great. The cracked screen is fine too - you don't notice it when the iPad is turned on. You might get a big discount on one which is a bit battered. My old one can no longer take any of the new apps, but it still does what it does very well. Obviously the newer your iPad is, the more you will be able to do with it, but I can still use old versions of midi designer and set list maker on my old iPad, for instance.

Help !!

Just bought a px5s and downloaded the template for midi designer. It all looks ok and when I connect via usb the midi designer connections page shows the px5s is connected o.k. When I try to change any settings in midi designer there is no change at the keyboard. Is there something else I need to do??

Thanks

Make sure the stage setting you are using is programmed to use the controls in the template. Not all sounds will be affected by the sliders, etc.
