Converting MIDI file to CMS file (not CM2)

Hi,

 

I just got a WK7600 and have a question. Is there any application available that can convert a .midi files to a .CMS file. Note: CM2 does not seem to be supported by WK7600 so it has to be CMS.

Hello ervmapa, welcome to Casio Music Forums.  Check this bunch of posts, it looks like it's about mp3 files, but if you read it, it might help solve your conversion problem because it's about converting back and forth from CMS to MID (SMF) and the other way around. And although it's for the WK6500, it seems the WK7600 will be the same. Looks like you can do what you need to do in the keyboard, but you need to use your SD card and a card reader connected to your computer to get files into the card's "musicdat" folder.

Because of another recent thread, here, on this forum, I have done considerable research (endless Google and Bing searches, mostly) on this subject over the past several days.  As an owner of several of the newer CTK/WK-6XXX/7XXX boards, I have a personal interest in this matter.  To the best of my knowledge, here is the history and status of this topic.

 

CM2 is the Casio proprietary song format for their LK (Lighted Key) and certain models of their PX series keyboards to support the "Lesson" feature of those units.  There is a Casio utility program that will convert a Standard MIDI File (SMF) in ".mid" format to the CM2 format and download it to a compatible keyboard or save it back to the PC's hard drive as a CM2 file.

 

Similarly, the Casio IDES software for older CTK/WK units (CTK-6XX/9XX, WK-3XXX, etc) included a standalone Rhythm Conversion module that imported a Standard MIDI File (SMF) and allowed it to be edited and converted to a User Rhythm.  The resulting ".ckf/.Z00" User Rhythms ARE useable by the newer (CTK/WK-6XXX/7XXX) boards, but may require some editing to correct or update instrument/drum-kit voicings.  When these files are loaded into User Memory of the newer boards, they are converted to the new ".AC7" Rhythm File format, but these are User Rhythm files - N O T - CMS song files.  The IDES software also allows transfer of SMF song files between a PC and the keyboard, but they are played by the keyboard's SMF Player and are handle completely separate from the proprietary song sequencer files - just like the newer units.  Song sequencer files on the older units are in a ".ckf/.Z02" file format and are not portable to the newer units.

 

CMS is the Casio proprietary song format of the current line of Arranger Workstations (CTK/WK-6XXX/7XXX).  While these units offer the option of saving song files in either CMS or SMF formats on the SD Card, Casio has provided no software for conversion of either SMF or CM2 files to the CMS format.  For those who might ask the question "Can the newer boards use the CM2 file format directly, without conversion?", the answer is NO.  Attempting to download a CM2 file to non-compatible boards results in a "File format error" message.

Hi G2, I can't figure out how to get your midi To CMS converter to work.

JUst wanted to verify that Ginkiter's Converter program WORKS.  I have converted several mid files to cms and they will load, play and can be edited.

Jokeyman posted a procedure, because it is a very crude program that produces many error messages, but they can be ignored and move on. I also will write up a little manual.
