advanced sampling questions

curious mind

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow XW-G1 owners,

I don't own an G1 yet, but already have lots of questions,

that I can't find an answer to in the manual or the editor I already installed ;)

I get that you can combine 5 samples in one user wave tone,

and that you can split them across the keyboard, with each sample

having it's own loop points.

1. Now how do I go about to assign each split sample in the wave tone it's own root key?

I can't find any information on that.

e.g. I sample a flute at pitch F3, and do a second sample playing F4 on the flute...

now I sample an analog saw wave1 at pitch F3 and saw wave2 at F4 and maybe a kick drum sound.

I transfer my 16bit 42khz mono samples via the Editor (as the G1 can only sample @10bit)

combined in one single user wave tone, each split sample having perfect loop points.

I now want to play the saw wave1 from key C2 to B2 and saw wave2 from C3 to B3

the flute from C4 to B4 and C5 to B5. The kick should be mapped on C6.

all in the same preset using just one user wave tone,

all samples in correct pitch in respect to their root key

(up to 50 different samples, right?)

2. Is it possible to play the split samples in a user wave tone polyphonic? or are all user waves tones solo synth only?

I would need to play chords with the saw wave and play the flute on top.

Also the saw wave should have a shorter release time than the flute sound (seperate envelopes),

and the flute should have vibrato when triggered via an external midi keyboard with aftertouch

(note I would not want to waste two user wave tones to do that,

in order to max out the ridiculously low user sample and preset memory,

a hundred user preset and wave tone slots would be more reasonable ...

well, sometimes limitations encourage creativity  ;))

3. Is it possible to filter a user wave tone when played polyphonic

using faders, knobs or key velocity? (e.g. via a DSP effect?)

4. Is it possible to filter a user wave tone in real time when played polyphonic

but also play drum sounds at the same time that should not get filtered?

thank you all so much for any input on this.

Hello Larry and welcome to CMF.

You have advanced questions.  We have advanced answers.   :D

1)  Once you're done with the user wave convert function, you will save the new tone using the editor.  This will save it on your computer. Now you will need to load the wave tone into the G1 using the transfer tab.  Next, you enter edit mode either in the editor or G1 itself.  (Note: You cannot see the user wave editing functions in the data editor without the XW-G1 being connected).  In editing, you have the ability to coarse tune each split, fine tune, adjust it's key range and original key.

You get 5 splits per user tone.  There are 10 user tones for a total of 50 possible samples.

2)  The user wave tones themselves are always polyphonic.  But this is only the beginning.  The samples within the wave tones can be used in the solo synth. The 2 PCM oscillators of the solo synth can each be one of the user wave splits.   The splits can also be assigned to keys in a user drum set. Each key in a user drum set can velocity switch between up to 4 samples.

3) You can independently adjust the filter of each split of a user wave in editing mode.  Outside of edit mode, you can use a knob to adjust the total filter.  The filter must be set before playing a note here.  It's not dynamic/real time like in the solo synth.  Velocity cannot be used to affect the filter in the poly user wave tones. Velocity can be used for filtering samples used in a solo synth tone.

4) As mentioned above.  No, not real time for polyphonic.  Filter movement will not affect an already sounding note.

As far as drums not being filtered while the sampled wave tones are.  Yes, this is possible using either the step sequencer or a drum set in a zone in a performance.  Set up the filter knob to only be enabled for the user wave zone.

Hey Brad,

thanks a ton for the info and tips!

I feel i've got a much clearer picture now about the possibilities and limitations of the G1.  ;)

Did you try LFO filter modulation on chords yet? (I won't give up so quick hehe)

Can't wait for my G1 to arrive to push it to its limits.

By the way I just read that Casio discontinued the whole XW line,
guess that's why I got mine for just $300 in a blow out sale.   ^_^

Re Qs 3 and 4: it is possible to implement real time filtering of polyphonic user wave tones via the performance mode technique whereby a PCM tone or user wave in zone 2 is routed through the solo synth in zone 1, usually with all solo synth oscillators off. The key is to enable the DSP line for zone 2.

Zone 2 is then routed through Block 7, the solo synth's resonant filter and DSP. Set the solo synth filter cutoff to a low value and its TouchSense to 63 for real time key velocity control of the filter cutoff. The G1 solo synth sliders can also be used to modify the solo synth filter type, cutoff, resonance and evelope depth while in a performance in real time as well.

I have also uploaded some files which use this basic setup to access the solo synth DSP, distortion in this case but any of the other effects could be used
