Syncing XWP1 with other midi devices

Hi guys

I have owned an XWP1 for the past month and have primarily enjoyed using the rasping synth leads whilst jamming with my band.

I am though wanting to set up a new project which is dependent on communication between MIDI devices.

I have a Yamaha MOX8 workstation and have used it in the past extensively to play drums loops arpeggios. One drawback of using that instrument is that it does not have separate outs. The bass particular suffers and I have been looking for a solution for since bass for quite a while.

The phrase sequence on the Casio XWP1 is really a lot of fun and potentially very useful. I have managed to record in several base loops for some of my compositions.

The problem that I have had is that I am finding it difficult to make the MIDI sync work with my Yamaha keyboard.

I have gone into the MIDI settings of the Casio and set the sync function to SLAVE. I then connect a MIDI out cable from the Yamaha to them MIDI in of the Casio. I play a rhythm arpeggio on the Yamaha. When I then try to somehow play the phrase sequencer or arpeggio on the Casio nothing happens.

I have also tried in reverse to play the Yamaha from the Casio by using the Casio as the driving tempo and the Yamaha as the slave. Again this does not seem to work.

Any advice would be appreciated because the seem to be some real possibilities in syncing up these two keyboards but somehow the MIDI clock signal seems to be going astray.

Many thanks

Steve

If you're slaving the Casio to the Yamaha I believe you probably have to enable the Yamaha to send the arp to MIDI out thru an internal setting.  I used to own a Korg TR76 that had similar behaviour.

As for slaving the Yamaha to the XW's step sequencer, you have to enable MIDI out for each and every instrument channel in the step sequence.

For details on how to set this up on the Casio refer to this posting in the FAQ.

Then you'll have to assign the individual channels to corresponding instrument channels on the Yamaha.

Likewise if you're sending an arp sequence to the Casio from the Yamaha you'll also have to assign each instrument voice to the appropriate MIDI channel and instrument on the XW.

Thanks for the replies guys.I did turn off the Casio to make the sync changes occur.

It turns out that I needed to delve much deeper into the Yamaha MOX menus. There is  located a quick setup function which included setting the midi clock to "out." I also needed to turn off the keyboard transmit to avoid the yamaha keyboard playing notes on the casio.

This has fixed the timing when I'm using the Casio as a slave. I have got some pretty in your face results out of syncing the Yamaha drums and other arpeggios with the Casio phrase sampler. I want to use a bass loop live and the casio seems to do the trick. Will probably get a dedicated bass loop synth eventually because   the casio as a lead synth is so playable...

Cheers guys
