a couple of questions for you experts.

Recommended Posts

ok, I got a DI box recently (radial proD2 stereo DI box) so I can go through the multikable with the rest of the band, but it makes the keyboard sound so muffled like the speaker is wrapped in bedsheets, that I still position myself so I can drag the twin jack-jack leads all the way to the mixer. am I doing something wrong?

next question is a long shot and i'm fully expecting the answer to be no.

can I split the keyboard so the very top right key makes a hand-clap?

Make sure you are connecting your keyboard's line outs to the "INPUT" jacks of the Pro-D2 and not the "PAD" jacks, which are attenuated 15 db.  Even though the D2's intent is to match your keyboard's high impedance line outs to the low impedance mic inputs of the mixer, what you describe sounds (no pun intended) like a horrendous impedance mismatch somewhere.  Check with your sound/mixer person to make sure the D2's low impedance outputs are actually connected to low impedance mic inputs on the mixer and not high impedance inputs of some kind.  There could be a problem or mismatch with the multicable.  Also, the D2's sales hype states that it takes the "edge" off digital keyboard outputs and adds some warmth to them.  That means it has some kind of passive audio filtering (probably bandpass) with no amplification to bring the level back up after filtering, or it could have a defective filter.  At this point, I have to fall back to the old rule of thumb in problem determination.  If the keyboard sounds OK when connected direct into the mixer and bad with the D2 in mix (assuming no problem/mismatch with the multicable), then the problem is most likely something with the D2.  In that case, I think you would probably be better off talking to the Radial folks rather than Casio or Casio users.  I am not sure what the odds are of finding someone here on this forum with your particular brand/model of keyboard feeding into your particular brand/model of DI box feeding into your particular brand/model of mixer, but the Radial folks would most likely have the broadest spectrum of experience with their products.

As for you second question - your assumption is correct - NO !  The CTK/WK-6XXX/7XXX units only allow +/- 2 octaves of offset and only on the high (right) side of the keyboard split point and only +/- 12 semi-tones of transpose offset that are applied globally to the entire board (both sides of the split point simultaneously), and the Tone Editor does not allow editing of the drum kits or user selection of wave samples.  So, there is no way to get the hand clap from the low end of the board to the high end.  It might be best to just pick up an inexpensive (used ?) drum machine or groove box with assignable pads and feed its audio-out to the keyboard's audio-in and mount it in the near vicinity of the keyboard for easy access.  If you have an iPad or other tablet, that might work for you with the correct app.
