Casio px 5 sounds played by an external master keyboard

Hi All,

It's simple, i want to play with Casio px5 and an external master keyboard. I want to play, for example, piano sound on Casio and strings on the master. Obviously All sounds from Casio engine.

To test the master if the midi message arrived:
I link a external MIDI keyboard: its MIDI out to Casio MIDI in, external keyboard on channel 1. the purpose is to play the same sound of casio to test if it works, but there is no sound if i play the external keyboard (if i play Casio keyboard  there is normal sound). I thoutght that it would have worked..
In system setting the MIDI in is enable.

p.s. the master keyboard works perfectly. i connected it thorught the same midi out to the midi in of an audio interface connected to a computer and it's all ok.

It really should be plug-n-play out of the box.

Check the midi cabling:  MIDI OUT port from Master ---->  MIDI IN port to PX-5s

Make sure PX-5s volume is up.

If you are using headphones, you'll only be able to listen to 1 device at a time unless you have some sort of through input like on the px (I know it seems obvious - but I can't tell you how many times I've had my headphones plugged into one thing and couldn't understand why I couldn't hear anything out of the other).

Check the MIDI device ID numbers on both.  They should be set to general;  "ALL" on the Px-5s

@ scott hamlin: I tried about 60 factory stage setting and with no one i got sound playng from the master keyboard

@ choppin: the cable and the cabling is ok, if I link the same cable from the same midi out to my audio interface midi in, the software in my pc works ok. So I verified that my master keyboard is trasmitting in midi channel one.

the headphone and the volume is ok. I have the casio and the master (that trasmits in channel one, but I also try various midi channel) connected: if I play the casio I normally hear sound, if I play the master nothing.

Device id in casio is "all", but i dont understand well what it means. in the master I dont know where and what is device ID.

I tried also to connected via usb to my pc, and with ableton I made a midi track and assign it to CASIO USB MIDI OUT on channel 1 and the casio sound ok. I tried also with different midi channel and it was ok, it played the different sound of stage settings (or mixer) of casio and it was ok.

BUT when i connected the midi in of casio to the midi out of my external audio interface, and with ableton I assign the same midi track NOT to casio usb, but to the midi out of the audio interface i heard no sound with every midi channel.

So throuth usb it work, but thorught midi in no.

I tried with another master and it worked....

So no a problem of casio midi in.

I dont know why..the Doepfer properly works with a computer throught MIDI cable linked to MIDI in Of an audio interface.. But with Casio no.

I tried a Roland a33 and it's OK.

I'll use the Roland now.

Thank you for your help

I don't understand well the question..

The computer, if i Don't link the USB cable, dont recognize Casio input. It recognizes only the input and output (5pin) Of my audio interface.

And with 5pin output Of Doepfer linked with 5pin input Of audio interface the Doepfer works.

But with casio with the same settings the roland works and the Doepfer dont..so the problem it's something in the doepfer

Going back to the device ID:  there is some mention in the Doepfer manual of a bank setting.

Bank 2 (Seclected Device in Play mode) specifically can have values 1, 2, or 3:

1=B4

2=EVB3

3=Remote

Perhaps the PX-5s doesn't like this and you may want to change it on the Doepfer.

You may also want to check bank 5 = Velocity mode.  The Doepfer my be transmitting velocity messages that the PX-5s can't interpret and they are coming across as zero.

You can test if the PX-5s is receiving midi data (even if it's not playing it) by routing the midi in to the USB and seeing if the computer receives the messages:

d3m ---> MIDI Out 5 pin ----> MIDI In Px-5S ----> MIDI out USB ---->  USB Computer

For the PX-5S settings

[sys Settings] > MIDI > USB Out Select > MIDI (Midi IN)

If the midi messages are being received at all, they should pass through to the computer.
