XW G1 Update

Hi all,

I'm not usually much of a 'forum joiner', as I tend to be able to find answers to most questions I have through research and forum searches. However, with regard to the G1 I have to admit that my research is raising more questions than answers.

Whilst I have, therefore, numerous questions, I will start with the most burning one.

Before I do I should point out that I do not as yet own a G1. It is very much on the shortlist, but that's another set of questions.

So, I have read that there is an update for the G1... or indeed two updates.

In the first I understand that there are changes regarding the multi function key, and that keys on the keyboard can be assigned to switch pattern. However, the description I read here:-

http://support.casio.com/en/support/download.php?cid=008&pid=54

.. doesnt seem (the way I read it) to pertain to switching pattern with a keyboard key. Or am I incorrectly assuming that this statement

"In addition to it’s other capabilities you can now assign keys on the keyboard to switch patterns."

... refers to the 'black and whites'

I downloaded the update (though I reiterate I do not have the keyboard) but it does not seem to include any other documentation.

I also note a second update, which is even more vague, stating

  • Improved operation of the external part volume.   • Improved certain operation.

the first point I could probably decipher when I get a G1 (probably get a G1).. but the second ??

Any clarification to either of the points, or any other undocumented points regarding the updates, would be gratefully received

I would strongly emphasize that I have extensively searched for further information on this, so if it IS clearly stated somewhere I am very very sorry for missing it.. but Im pretty confident it's not something one would find with any form of targeted search.

Finally. Whilst this is my priority question, is there anyone that wouldn't object to my listing my multiple other questions (some possibly a little dumb in appearance) in one go??

Yes.  Multi function keys (C5 thru C7) can trigger any "pattern" from any "step sequence".

We strongly recommend updating to the latest firmware.  All additions and changes to the user interface have been documented on the firmware page. Vague statements like "improved certain operation" are always "under the hood" changes and can include bug fixes. This is why we always recommend updating.  http://support.casio.com/en/support/download.php?cid=008&pid=54

As far as questions...that's what the forums is here for.   :)

Thanks for that.

A much more prompt response than I expected seeing as things appear to have slowed a little in the XW forums in recent times.

In all honesty I have re-written this reply a few times as clearly I didnt know enough to understand the response and I initially failed to absorb the C5 - C7 reference (being a very VERY amateur musician).

OK. So in combination with another look at the manual I now believe I am quite clear regarding the multifunction key issue thanks to your answer.

I'm making a little bit of an assumption here, given that I have been primarily reading up on the G1.... but it seems there have been references to things 'coming' for the XW's following it's release - even subsequent to these updates - but this must have mainly targeted the P1 as clearly the G1 has not had a great deal of enhancement. I am not suggesting that I feel the G1 is lacking.. merely making reference to the comments I have seen around.

Anyway, thanks again for this. I will start a new thread with an appropriate title for my general question list. Thanks in advance for any contribution you may be able to make there.

Could you link to the references you mention?  I'm guessing they are about the tutorial videos and new sound downloads made for the synths since their release.  If it's the sounds....they are all under the downloads section of this forum.

I feel my statement may have been rather pointless.. or at best 'rhetorical' as I am obviously able to see the updates available for the G1, which we have discussed earlier in the thread.

I have indeed seen that clip thanks Chas, though my point was made more in reference to some statements I read which, as far as I recall, generally came about when people were suggesting the XW's were being discontinued. I believe these responses not only advised that they were not being discontinued but they were being actively developed. (This is not a quote, and without digging up the threads all I can say is I am using term 'actively developed' to reflect the meaning I took from the relevant comments. In fact as I suggested before, I thought the term 'things coming' was used, but I may have got that phrase from the clip Chas posted).

So if you really want me to find the exact source(s) that led me to make my initial statement, then I can have a dig around, but knowing what updates there actually are, I'm not sure what I'm going to get from the exercise.

My apologies.

Edit:-

I am unsure that I would have been influenced by that clip in hindsight as I focused on the G1 from early on however in the initial stages i DID look at both the G1 and P1, so the truth is I am unsure.
