KNance Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Hi all. I am new here and I am seeking advice. I just picked up used cdp s360 for a friend to use in our garage band. Now, to be clear, I know nothing about digital keyboards. I play guitar and it was to be a gift. My problem is that the encoder dial that allows for the 700 chices of sounds has quit working. It plays piano 1, thats all. I monkeyed with it for a bit and then the wheel quit working. I can't even get it to allow me to do a hard reset. Guys and gals: is it broken beyond redemption or did I push the wrong button somewhere? I really don't wish to put it in the trash but it doesn't have any value now. I'm glad that I haven't mentioned it to him yet. Thank all, in advance, for any input Quote
Brad Saucier Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Welcome to the forums. Unfortunately if the dial is not working at all, it will need repairs. Nothing can disable it other than a hardware issue. Are the registration buttons working? Those can be used to store and recall various tone setups. There is an app to control the piano. Casio Music Space app can connect by USB cable to the keyboard and give you a touch screen interface to control most settings and select tones. Page from the app manual below for some idea of what to expect. https://web.casio.com/app/en/music_space/manual/WBSPSYzvpaqanc.html Quote
KNance Posted June 26, 2024 Author Posted June 26, 2024 Brad, thank you for the reply. Has anyone ever determined what, precisely, is failing? The encoder dial is mounted, I think, to a long thin board. Is it worth it to replace this (motherboard)? Or is it not casios' habit to sell parts. I paid less than 250 dollars for it. I was even wondering if I could drive it from laptop or pad. Any opinions on that. Back in the day my career was in installation and maintenance of MRI and cat scan equipment, so I can handle it. I guess no chance to reflash the firmware Huh? Haha, yeah, I'm grasping at straws here. Quote
Brad Saucier Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Casio sells parts through sites like this one. You may have missed my edited post with additional information above. The app is a good alternative to use. You may not need to repair the knob. Quote
KNance Posted June 28, 2024 Author Posted June 28, 2024 Brad, thanks again for the input. I have ordered an encoder from pacparts. I am also aware that it is a gamble because I can't troubleshoot it so this is just using a parts cannon. I did notice that the encoder is very loose with much lateral play. Maybe I'll get lucky. I also have a cable coming to interface an android device. One more question, if I may. Is the encoder normally sloppy to the touch? Kirby Quote

KNance Posted June 30, 2024 Author Posted June 30, 2024 This one will rock, laterally, about 2 mm. But I have had some success. i received a midi to usb c cable that I ordered and drove the piano from my phone. it worked beautifully with all tone stations accessable. I have the encoder on order but the keyboard player has old eyes and and 8 inch tablet will work much better for him. I am very pleased. So, I'll 3d print a holder/mount for the tablet and my buddy will have a new instrument to play. Thank you, folks, for the input. 2 Quote
KNance Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 Hi all, I want to thank you guys for the knowledge that you shared. I picked up a cheap tablet from Wal-Mart and the piano works beautiffuly. My friend is well pleased with the sound and all is good. I am receiving the encoder from pacparts today but i am unsure when I will install it. It works well as it is and "you don't mess with success"! Yeah , no hurry on the final fix. Thanks again Kirby Nance 1 Quote
Brad Saucier Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Awesome! Can you tell us the model of tablet you're using? We're always on the lookout for tablets that work well with the Casio app. Quote
KNance Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 Yes, but I cannot say how it works when compared to other tablets. I am using a ONN surf 7 inch tablet from walMart. I am using a cable, a MIDI style male to a usb c male to interface and it connects immediately. The tablet new is around $60. So far, my friend, who is definitely not computer savy, is very pleased. Now to see if it lasts. So far, so good. One more thing that people will want to know is that the cable connection for a tablet can only be made through the USB midi style connection. i hope this helps. Kirby Nance 1 Quote
Brad Saucier Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Thank you. Correct, the USB Type B port is the one used for MIDI, which is needed for the app to function. The other USB port on the piano is a type A port for a USB flash drive to store data. Quote
