I'm using the S350 sounds for MIDI tracks in AVID PTLE 9.

I use a different sound for each track I record.

I can save the session, reopen it, and the correct sounds from the S350 playback fine.

I can even restart the computer and get the same results.

The problem is when I power off the S350.

I reopen PTLE session but all the MIDI tracks playback using Piano Voice #1 of the S350.

I have to reconstruct the session by reselecting all of the original voices used to record the MIDI tracks.

I'm not finding a work around in PTLE's MIDI Setup or Preferences.

What am I overlooking?

Thanks in advance!

Each time you start playback, the software needs to transmit program change data to the keyboard, which is not happening until you manually select tones.  Each track within a MIDI file is responsible for sending that data, or else the keyboard simply doesn't know what tones to use.  Or, the header data of a MIDI file sends that data.  I'm not familiar with the details of Avid software, but generally you'll need to look for how to make the software send that data each time you playback the song.

The software should have an editing tool that allows you to insert a program change event to each track.

The easiest way is to simply start recording a track, and while it's recording, select a tone on the keyboard.  The CDP-S350 will send the program change data to your DAW so that tone selections will be stored in the track.

I've read that in some literature I have but I'm miffed this isn't more user friendly.

I haven't experienced this much difficulty setting up my external midi devices in the past.

That's basically the way MIDI is working. Sometimes some synth could automatically send program changes when you record something with them, but it's not the way the CDP-S350 is working. If you prefer you can setup your different sounds on tracks 2 to 6 on the CDP, record just a few notes on each track, then export to USB as midi SMF, then import the midi file into your DAW, then the correct program change will be done for you.

You can also prepare it from your DAW, the program changes for every instrument is in the file "Built-in Music Data Lists" from this page: https://www.casio.com/intl/electronic-musical-instruments/support.CDP-S350BK/

for example the instrument "181 WAH FINGERED BASS 1 33 36" means that 33 is the program and 36 is the bank, which you'll have to enter as midi event at the begining of your track.
