Hi I am trying to record the accompaniment parts from the CTX5000 into protools using a Behringer UM2 Interface, and an iMac., I had no problem doing this using GarageBand on my Mac laptop with my Roland VA7  but I am getting nowhere using the iMac (Sonoma version) with the CTX. All I manage to record is a very quiet noisy distorted mess been reading and going round in circles for days now so wondering if anyone knows what I should be looking at.

I should explain that I am trying to record the whole of the accompaniment on to 1 stereo track of Audio not Midi. any suggestions apart from tearing my hair out appreciated.

I can tell you that I've done quite a bit of recording using my CT-X5000 and a Behringer UM2 to my Windows 11 PC, and haven't had any problems.  The keyboard output is simply line audio, so it doesn't seem likely that that's the problem.  Have you connected headphones to the UM2 to listen to the CT-X keyboard feed, to see if it sounds OK there?  Does the CT-X setup work when connected to your Mac laptop, instead of the iMac?  If so, it certainly seems like it could be a driver or configuration problem on the computer side.  I assume you have the two keyboard outputs going to the two inputs to the UM2, and I know you need a certain version of the driver (at least, on Windows) to be able to configure the UM2 audio as a single stereo feed instead of two separate mono feeds.

This article relating to using the UM2 on a Mac says: "Another issue that MAC users may experience is intermittent or distorted sound....", so you might want to go through this and see if it helps.

One thing I seem to remember is that I believe the UM2 supports 16-bit audio (instead of 24-bit) at 48kHz, so you might want to check your audio configuration to make sure it's set correctly.

Many Thanks for the suggestions. I will investigate further and when I solve the issue will report back. Thank you once again.

I am no further forward despite doing all that the CTX manual tells me to do which is not exhaustive anyway, nothing is being recorded I am giving this up as a bad job and going back to my RolandVA7. Not pleased with Apple and their support so far. its like I am talking to a computer instead of talking about one!

There is nothing to know about the CTX if you're recording audio.  You would be recording audio from the line outputs of the CTX same as any other instrument.  If your Roland works with the same setup, so should the CTX.

I would go back the the Roland setup and confirm it still works first, then disconnect the audio cables from the Roland and connect them to the CTX.  It should be that simple.

I agree with Brad, this should not have anything to do with the CT-X.  I had asked earlier whether you could connect headphones to your UM2 (making sure the Direct Monitor button is pushed in) and hear the keyboard play through it.  Be sure you have the keyboard volume level set to a reasonable level, as well as the A/B gain knobs on the UM2.  The SIG LEDs on the UM2 should illuminate when you play something on the keyboard, but don't turn the gain up so high that the Clip LEDs start to illuminate.   If that's all working, and you can hear the keyboard play through headphones plugged into the UM2, then the problem is entirely on the computer side.

I'm not a Mac user, so I can't try this out, but I see several references online regarding the need to set up an "Aggregate" audio device in Mac OS to properly handle a UM2 (or other mixer input/output audio device) properly.  I also read somewhere that having more than one standard USB audio CODEC device defined (if that's applicable) can cause issues with the configuration not being uniquely settable for each device.  Anyway, here's one example: https://pupuweb.com/solved-behringer-usb-audio-mixer-mac-os-working-the-selected-device-input-controls/

Hi, Thank you all for the replies, Mclandy:- Yes I have set up the Aggregate  audio device for the UM2 as I found the same suggestion somewhere online, as for the output from the UM2 I have done that to check the direct monitor via headphones and all is fine in that regard.  Before I get the VA7 out of mothballs (Its a beast and very heavy) I have checked using new cables to make sure nothing is breaking down from the UM2 to the iMac. I have contacted a "Mac Pro Logic Expert"  who is willing to take a look at the set up  on a 'No win No fee' which I think is fair enough, I'll be happy to get it sorted even if it costs me a few quid because this is driving me nuts. The problem is either the UM2 or more likely the iMac set up and me missing something. Many thanks for your suggestions, I'll see what the guy does and let you know. and post the solution when found
