  1. My pic is one i took of my MZ-2000 screen during bootup.  The word Casio is animated and flys in with water ripples below it.  I tried to put and animated pic here but it didnt work.

A midi connection allows one device to control the other.  For example, you can trigger sounds in a drum machine with they keys of your xw if you wished.   Many things are possible.  It gets very complicated at higher levels.   Garage band can control the sounds in your XW or the other way around.

For the connection:  I know that the usb jack on all Casio's is a standard printer cable type jack.   Do you have a printer cable handy?

Nice catch of a screen, Brad!

I hope to be able to control Garage Band or other apps, if this starts working. Then I would deal with MIDI -- one step at a time. ))

  2. Hi AndreiR,

You have a new profile pic!  Is that your actual setup?

As for the ipad?  I don't have an ipad so I'm useless on this really,  but I've read that the camera connector kit for ipad is how its done.  You probably already have this though.

Hi Brad, you also have a new picture! Yes this this my actual setup. I would post it in "What's your setup like" thread, but I feel that it's not really "connected" in any fancy way, just OUT to a mixer and a computer via USB. I would like to learn how to connect to my iPad and maybe to a drum machine (via MIDI), if I knew how and the purpose of such a connection.

Yes, I got a camera kit. Actually for Retine iPod it's only one cable with a female USB on one end and a special end for iPad 4. It's good I caught the difference in the store.

With all that said, the main question remains: how to connect those two, so the nice rubber shelf is used for the purpose intended by good designers at Casio?

  3. Hi everybody!

How do you connect your iPad to  XW (XW-G1 in my case) via USB? I'm following the manual, but after recommended steps nothing happens on either end.

I have Garage Band app installed on my iPad Retina, to start with, and I just don't know where and what and how. I have sound via audio out to mic, or instrument, or line.

Please, if you have a successful experience with this, share it with me.

    Thank you for your help!

  4. Interesting. I tried it too. At first it just ignored the "Tie". Then I used the mixer to change the sound to an organ sound. Set the note length to 100%. I don't know which one of these actions solved the problem, but my chord now holds for the entire pattern. After the pattern ends, the chord is played again.

It worked for me too. But the sound of organ is somewhat different. And I don't even know what I'm doing ... Back to manual ...

  5. Hi!

I was trying to create a groove patterns in step-sequencer. All goes fairly well, except for chord part (or solo), playing organ. The notes in recorded version sound chopped off, and they don't want to overlap. I tried different note lengths etc., with no good result. Is this the only way -- one note at a time? Am I doing something fundamentally wrong? Missing something?
How can I record parts with nice organ notes, being long and overlapping?

    Thank you for your help!

P.S. And I will not stop mentioning -- the manual is written badly. Casio, please rewrite the manual!!!

The PDF is more useful I think anyway since you can print it up and use it as Quick Start Guide instead of the official manual.

I agree, PDF is better, thanks Happyrat1! I don't know what happened to another link/address, can't find it again...

Here is a couple of more interesting documents  -- with lots of little digits. I guess could be useful to somebody:

    http://support.casio-europe.com/ru/download/manuals/emi/XW-P1_Appendix.pdf

    http://support.casio.com/pdf/008/nil%20%28XWP1_G1_MIDI_E_WEB1203A%29.pdf

  7. But I guess I can add this right away: the manual is written badly. I really think that Casio should rewrite the manual and publish it in PDF. Official step-by-step video tutorials would also be very helpful. And I'm sure this would increase sell-ability of the unit. Not all artists have engineering background. An artist buys an instrument in order to create.

OK, this is my 2¢ for now.

  8. Our Williams Encore broke, that's what initially caused to go out to look for some new ivory-and-ebony.

It looks like PX-5s is a serious piano, for real keyboard players -- not for two-finger-pokers like me :(

Good luck with that! and my hat off.

  9. Brad, thanks again! Great!

I found the external input level in the mixer menu.

By the way, I got my XW-G1 a few days ago at Sam Ash for $399. Actually I went there to check MicroKorg (same prise), and I sow this one and it was $100 less than XW-P1 -- as simple as that! :)

As I said,  I don't have any experience with synths except for VST plugins in Riper.

Looks like MZ-2000 is a fun instrument.

  10. Thank you, Brad for the link, and for your encouragement! I am diving in and it's fun.

One more question about the XW-G1 -- the input signal from the microphone (Shure Beta 57-A) seems very weak. Am I missing some setting somewhere in some menu? Same goes for an el. guitar input (if straight, without any amplification).

  11. Hello everybody!

I'm glad that I found this forum. I just got my new XW-G1 a few days ago. I'm mostly a guitar player, and I want to learn to use this keyboard -- to compose and perform backing rhythm tracks for my songs.

I'm trying to learn to use it, and I found the manual is difficult to follow. I watched a couple of video tutorials (which are helpful)  on this synth, and the rest are XW-P1 oriented. For some reason XW-P1 more popular. I wonder why ....

I know almost nothing about synths, so I expect some learning curve. For some reason I can't grasp the concept of "zones". Would anybody, please advise me for a better way to learn to use this keyboard.

    Thank you for your help!
