  1. You made me curious and I went back to my webpage and found out that I had deleted that video (and I think a couple of others) because I wasn't happy with the recording.  I'm uploading them again because I think I even deleted some from the YouTube channel...  I have to look into this...

Jealousy?  That emotion, along with envy, is one I never experienced....  I have "admiration" for some, but never envy or even jealousy...  When I hear some piano playing I really like, I just enjoy it to the max and I may WISH that I could play like that, but to be jealous???  It's so negative...

But unfortunately, psych is very complicated, so you may be somewhat right (I'll give them the benefit of a doubt).

  2. Thanks for your encouragement.  I truly am my worst critic, and I'm so painfully aware of my shortcomings...  This is not false modesty;  I know I play OK and it's all by ear, but not the way I would WANT to play...

I am getting better, though, and your advice came right on time, because I have already learned a lot using the rhythms, and now I can put my learning to good use, so thanks again!

"So In Love" is already up in my YouTube channel, and it's on my page www.sergiosongs.com on the "Songs I live" tab.  Here's the link:

Maybe you could tackle some Gershwin or Porter next then, eh?

Not tried Gershwin songs except fooling around with the piano, but I did try "So In Love" by Porter, but did a horrible job with it.  Nevertheless, I did learn a lot about harmony, because finding his chords was a struggle, as I remember, and I got some bars missing measures, so there you have it...  Still, he was a genius!!!  Love his music!

"Casio...it's not just a keyboard...it's an obsession!" Yeah man!

Sounds like a regular Marketing guy....  Hey, it's catchy, what can I say?

BTW, thanks again for your advice.  I feel like I'm rediscovering the piano, surprising myself along the way...  I'm working on a song standard I like as an exercise, but I'm enjoying my new "freedom".  Not to badmouth the rhythm, because I KNOW it's a tool for composing (for me), but I can really hear the annoying noises on some of my recordings.  I also learned a LOT while working with the rhythm, so no regrets.

  5. That's so true!!!  Right now I get (through my cable) regular networks, many channels, HBO, etc.  But then I also subscribed to Netflix, and I get Amazon Prime Video, and then again I subscribed to Curiosity Stream, which has a lot of documentaries on all sorts of topics.  It's overwhelming!!!  I'm sure there will be significant changes over the next 5 years to reshape the industry (if we don't blow ourselves up before).

BTW, thanks for the suggestions on playing "unplugged"...  I can see how the rhythm can sound annoying in some songs.  I think it works on some, but not on many others.  There may be adjustments I could make, now that I know better the rhythm editor, but I haven't tried it yet.  Either way, I think it is a great TOOL for me to come up with melodies, but I'm going to try to return to just plain piano.  It may be a struggle...

  6. You know, I was listening last night to some of my songs, in particular paying attention to your comments on the rhythm.  I agree that it can be distracting, but I think that using the rhythm editor, which I know how to use only superficially, I could filter out some of the (specially) annoying drums...  I have to work on that.

Thanks for the comments, BTW.  I completely agree that using the accompaniment changes the song's mood and stuff...  I tried to find the rhythm available on the keyboard that "best fits" what I had in mind, but I agree that it's a compromise at best.  I have to digest all of that...

But one thing...  My "objective" in all of this is really very inconsequential...  I just wanted to preserve all that work that I did years ago, and also to regain my piano chops, now that I'm retired and plenty of time on my hands.  I love what I do, but I have no "ulterior" motive (meaning $$$), but I want to show my songs in the best way I can.  I think that the accompaniment makes the song richer....  Maybe eliminate the distracting drums, I don't know, I have to explore..

Here's a song from Pink Martini that I listened to last night.  It has all the melodic lines and chord changes that are part of ME; that's the stuff I grew up with.  But the arrangement is so complex and beautiful that I could never even try...

  7. Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto is my "ultimate"...  I'm not an expert by any means on classical composers, since I didn't suffer through the awful childhood piano lessons (my sympathy). But I know what I like, and over the years I've developed a liking for many of them, besides the Russians. I wonder if you've ever heard of Louis Gottschalk...  I discovered him some years ago. His music is very close to Caribbean rhythms and melodies and I think he's great. He's an American from Louisiana in the late 1800s, I think.

Last night I was listening to something more contemporary, but it's a group I also like a lot for their eclectic world music and their incredibly beautiful arrangements:  Pink Martini.

  8. Oh, no, no way.....  I just get transported somewhere in the cosmos when I hear her play...  Not all songs, of course, but so many of them...  What I like about her most is her command of the chords...  she just seems to "float" from key to key to key in a very unique way.  I'm sorry, I'm not worthy!   😮

BTW, I added a couple more files to the archive...

  9. Well, thanks a lot!  I'm very self-critical, and I hate all the arpeggios that I use (unconsciously) and they get boring to me.  The accompaniment gives me freedom (as I see it) to at least explore with the right hand and adjusting the harmonies with the left chords...  I don't know, it just worked for me.

When I listen to someone like Beegie Adair play the piano, THAT'S how I would LOVE to play, but never will...  She's just extraordinary (for my ears).

I will try harder to take your advice, because you are right, that playing solo is important, and I think I'm getting better (a bit) in my techniques.
