  1. So you get the timbre of the notes 3 semitones down without the note actually changing. I'll have to play around with that to see if I can hear the difference. But that actually leads to my next question. There is a split shift function too. I tried googling that and I got absolutely nothing. You have that set to -2. Does that also adjust the timbre of the notes too without actually changing the pitch of the notes? Where do you learn this stuff?

  3. Hey Brad. I really liked the old upright stage setting you did. I started taking it apart do see how you made it. I took off the distortion and was playing around with it. I changed the filter to the LPF3 and took it down to ~47 on both layers. I removed the fine tuning too. I really liked that piano sound. It's my favourite normal piano to play. It's kinda mellow so I might upload it if OP wants to try it. On zone 2, I put a sort of haunted wind sound made from white and pink noise in tune with the piano. Anyway, I always wanted to ask you: Why was the purpose in the pitch envelope of putting all the levels to -24, only to course tune it back up to 3?

  7. Here's another example of something I can't figure out: Two sine waves in a hex layer. Sine wave 1: Initial level: 127 Attack time: 45 Attack level: 0 Decay1 Time: 0 Decay1 Level: 127 Decay2 Time:45 Decay2 Level: 0 Sine wave 2: Initial level: 0 Attack time: 45 Attack level: 127 Decay1 Time: 0 Decay1 Level: 0 Decay2 Time:45 Decay2 Level: 127 I would expect them to be in sync like sine wave 1 hits 127 while sine wave 2 hits 0 and then that repeats. But what actually happens is that while sine wave 1 hits 127 the first time, sine wave 2 goes from 0 to 127 in quick succession twice, and then sine wave 1 hits 127 the second time about two seconds later. Why does that happen?
  8. So, from the info above I guess it seems every synth has their own set timings. I thought it would be a fixed thing. But say if I measured roughly (using a stop watch) in seconds for the amp attack time if: the initial level is set to 0 attack time is 127 attack level is 127 I've done that with a single note depressed and it seems it takes about 9.6 seconds to go from 0 to 127. But surely there must be some standard equation which is used to calculate what the time in seconds would be if say the attack time was set to 64? I've done that and I would have expected it to take maybe ~5 seconds (as 64 is half of 127), but no, it takes about .5 to 1 second. Anyone know?

  10. I'm one of those guys who snipes in the last 7 seconds. It's the only way to win anything on on ebay auction. You can even beat the bots. The trick is to wait until about 7 seconds. Have a bid ready entered in the box at some price a bit higher than the current one. Press the bid button. Ebay will throw up a max bid box for you to choose to fill in. Immediately you have put in a really high max bid there. Have your fingers ready in position to enter the number - As much as you would really, really pay if you had to and a bit more perhaps. The timer will be about 1 second now. You won't end up paying near that amount, you just need to make sure you outbid anyone else's max bid and so it's best if nobody thinks your there until the last second and you flummox them. Do not put a max bid in at any other time. Do not even bid on an item before the last few seconds. There is no point. All you are doing is pushing the price higher and making people aware there is someone else wanting the item. I've won every ebay auction I've tried to using this method. Before that, I lost them all.
  11. Often the stage settings sound different when I download but I think maybe it's because I can't play as well as the sample demo. This stage setting only uses one zone so one of us could save a phrase + sample and then upload them to the forum for others to try to see if it sounds the same on their keyboard. I'd do it now but I need to order a new thumb drive. I noticed there today in one of Brad's patches (cinema piano one) that he recommended turning off the compressor in the stage setting filter menu in order to load the compression he saved the stage setting with as the Px-5s loads the default always otherwise. (In that stage setting filter menu, you turn things on or off depending on whether you want the same params to load while you are switching stage settings) I wonder if that is why some stage settings sound different when I download them but I checked with this one and it was saved with just the default compression.
  12. I guess the main question I am wondering is: How is the time calculated between levels? For example in the screen capture below, for the filter envelope: the initial level is set to 0 attack time is 60 attack level is 127 So how long in seconds is 60? I'm guessing this calculated relative to the preceding and succeeding levels because if the initial level is set to 127, it will just skip the attack time altogether, no matter what it is set at. Then the other thing confusing me is with the the pitch and amp envelopes. If I set the same parameters say for the amp envelope: the initial level is set to 0 attack time is 60 attack level is 127 That attack time is not equal to the attack time for the filter envelope. Same thing happens with the pitch envelope. I've been playing around with these envelopes for days trying to figure out what's happening. Tried googling it and all you get is the same info about asdr and nobody says how time is calculated relative to the data points either side of it. I also think asdr must be for analogue synths, right and not so relevant to these digital synth params? Or can anyone recommend a book which explains this?
  13. I'd like it if there was a bit showing how to use the song sequencer, say a demo showing how to play a phrase using a hex layer over a drum loop phrase. This my first synth so I don't understand what 'channels', 'bank select msb' and the 'program change' parameters are and what their relationship is which seems to be key to understanding how to use the song sequencer. So if he could give some basic info about them I'd appreciate it too. That is probably basic synth stuff, not specific to to the PX5s so I'm not sure if he really wants to cover it and if he doesn't, that's cool but if he doesn't mind covering that sort of stuff and he's looking for more similar things to cover here are some other things I don't understand: The "Stretch Tune" parameters in the pitch envelope option menu for tones. The key follow and key follow base params in the the pitch envelope option for hex layers. I know he did a video using his western piano stage setting demo-ing this feature but I couldn't figure out how these params work.The Pitch locks in the hex layer edit menu.How the delay params work: The Ratios and Levels, feedback, high damp, tympo sync and the rest. What do they all mean? Cheers guys!
  14. instead of pressing the +/- buttons, once you have selected the menu option for high or low key for the split, there is a shortcut. Press the "num" button to the left of the +/- buttons and then press which keyboard key you want to be the high or low key. edit: just realised you were talking about transpose, not splitting, duh.

  18. Thanks Brad. Do you mean even for say all the cut-off values on the individual hex layers in a hex tone? Say for example all the hex layers in a hex tone are set to a different cut-off value and then slider 1 is set to cut-off. Do you think slider 1 will adjust them to the same value absolutely or to different values relative to what they were?
  19. In the data editor, some of of you might be familiar with "relative mode" For those who don't, there is an S button at the top of every zone and hex layer when editing a hex tone. If you right-click that button you can choose "relative mode". The default is "absolute mode" Then press the button above each zone or hex layer to turn sync on for those zones/layers. The buttons light up. In absolute mode when zones or hex layers are synced, if you change one value for one zone/layer, then the other zone/layer changes to the same value. In relative mode, you are able to adjust a setting for say hex layer 1 and the setting for any other layer you have sync turned on for changes relatively: So say filter is set to 10 for layer 1 and 20 for layer 2. In relative mode, if you change 10 to 15 for layer 1, layer 2 will change to 25. In the default absolute mode, both would have changed to 15. It's a nice feature and I wished it was on the keyboard itself. Found out today it is for the hex layers: If you are changing the settings of a hex tone on the board, and you are in the layer edit menus, well you probably know you can press the zone- button until you reach 'ALL'. This means you can adjust a particular parameter for all the layers instead of doing it individually for each layer. Here's the relevant part: If you use knob 2 to adjust any parameter for all the hex layers, it will adjust them all absolutely to the same value. However if you the yes/+ no/- buttons over on the right, it will adjust the values on each layer relatively to what the were when you started. Very handy to know and I have not seen this mentioned anywhere. Now I'm wondering if there is any way to keep relative mode for when you are playing live and want to adjust say the filter for a hex tone on the fly using one of the controls where all the layers have a different filter value. Anyone know?
  20. you have to format it in the px5s IIRC. It creates a Musicdat folder for you on the usb when you do this.

  23. press 'edit' in phrase mode to change the time signature. You can also undo your last overdub if you are overdubbing a phrase on that edit page or you can just hold the record button while in overdub mode to do the same thing. You can adjust the tempo of a phrase with the tempo button.
