You basically using the mixer as a preamp.. to bring the mic level to line level. If you don't need a mixer you can go with a standalone preamp, but I would go with the mixer. Much more versatile.

Yes, you can run audio into the PX-5s and record all of it to the USB thumb drive.   You'll need to use a separate mixer board for the microphone and then send the mixer audio out to the PX line in.  

Salutes and graces for the ready explanation, but does this mean that cannot directly connect the microphone to the entry "audio-in" but only through an external mixer?
