I decided to dust off the XW-G1 with the intention of making some patiently created Lo-fi by using all of the sample banks at once. This was pretty effective but the slow pace soon saw me enjoying the swiftness of the live looping approach. Still making use of the sampler for some patches but mostly using it in groove mode. I'll be posting a few of them on here.
If you're still making use of your XW-G1 please let me know -thanks

The last in the series of Casio XW-G1 Beats/Loops/Grooves.
This keyboard is great for getting ideas down and is great for the price with the only features that seem to lacking being:
1. longer samping time at 42khz
2. longer real time step sequencing.
The FuzzyHarmonix preset (P:090) has been great for inspiring me to raise my synth-solo game.
Peace!

I don't own a G1 so most of your stuff doesn't apply to my P1 anyway.
Still, I have one small complaint about the videos.
Your logo takes up 80% of the screen and the actual keyboard video is buried away in a tiny corner at an obtuse angle that really doesn't allow anyone to actually see which buttons you're pushing.
My advice is if you plan to make instructional videos about the XW line then make them overhead views of the full keyboard full screen with an insert of the screen display up in a corner.
Otherwise they are not really useful as anything other than a bit of musical entertainment.
Personally I stopped paying attention to this thread ages ago, but it continues to pop up now and again.
Gary
Hi!
Thanks for the feedback.
The videos that you speak of are not meant to be "instructional videos" as such, but I do get people asking me which chords I use so I place the overlay on there so people can pause and copy without me having to go back and check what I played.
I'm just sharing the fun that I can have with a £200 casio keyboard.
"Share your music here" is the name of the thread and I find it amazing that a casio keyboard can make music that is so close to the sound that I want to make.
What can I say? Sharing is addictive. I've tried to stop.
Yes I could have uploaded mp3s instead of videos but I happen to prefer videos plus having a link to YouTube means I am not adding to any bandwidth issues with people downloading large files.
If I do create any instructional videos then I will take onboard your advice about having an insert of the screen.
Thanks,
Peace!

Live looping with vocal sample on a soulful tip.
Still wishing that Casio made it possible to record more than one bar in real time.
This groove would have needed four bars (64 steps).
I'm actually just curious to know how much more expensive the unit would have been if the step sequencer function allowed for longer realtime recording like an electribe would do.
Peace!

Smooth Grroove Sampling.
This loop had me begging for more sample time.
This was recorded in stereo 22K which meant I could only have 2 bars at 84bpm.
This wasn't a problem until the last layer where the phrase needed to be 4 bars long to give the groove a nicer sense of shape.
Still fun.

I just love watching you work!
In posts #18 and 19, are you overdubbing into the G1 looper or phrase sequencer?
Hi! Yes, the G1 sample looper.
Thanks

It is possible to record notes in more than 16 Steps in realtime.
But only when i switch patterns and record notes at the same time.
Therefor i need 3 hands or a friend who helps me.
My solution is:
Autoswitching with midi.
I made a midi file in my favourite DAW Reaper (this will work with every Midi DAW).
The midi file has 4 bars (or 2-8 bars) and no notes in it.
It sends just Midi CC:
On 1.1.00:
CC100 = 127
CC101 = 127
CC038 = 000
CC006 = 000
CC098 = 001
CC099 = 037
On 2.1.00:
CC100 = 127
CC101 = 127
CC038 = 001
CC006 = 000
CC098 = 001
CC099 = 037
On 3.1.00:
CC100 = 127
CC101 = 127
CC038 = 002
CC006 = 000
CC098 = 001
CC099 = 037
On 4.1.00:
CC100 = 127
CC101 = 127
CC038 = 003
CC006 = 000
CC098 = 001
CC099 = 037
Now i can connect my Casio with my PC and let my DAW switch the pattern.
But better is:
I export the midi file and import it in my favourite Ipad DAW Genome Midi.
Now my Ipad switches the pattern for me.
Casio Synthesizer should work in midi clock master and the DAW in slave mode.
So everytime i hit the play Button on my synthesizer, it will loop pattern 1-2-3-4.
I would prefer to do this without external DAW.
I wish Casio would give me a firmware update with auto switch pattern, so that I could record notes in more than 16 steps without external DAW.
I think that this could be not too complicated.
You find 2 example midi files attached.
If they/casio could make this work without a PC, it would change things majorly. Even just a two bar (32 Step) groove. It would open out the possibilities to create music with soul on the fly.
Congrats on your solution, though!

Here's a house track which just uses the sequecer and mixer mute buttons. Had to use three chains on this one.
No chords in this piece so the problem/lag with the clock when swtching patterns wasn't really noticeable.
Could do with a mean vocal accompanied by some filter sweeps and kicks rolls to build up to the section changes.

Here's a track which just uses the squencer and mixer mute buttons. Although it was slightly long-winded compared to the looping approach, it's nice to be able to drop parts in and out.
Peace!

bmusproject >>> I hope you don't mind but I added your first two XW videos to the video section of the XW FAQ.
Very demonstrative of how to lay down a groove using the pattern sequencer.
Gary
Hi Gary,
Thanks!

Casio could make a really good workstation combining elements from the WK and XW keyboards. This track had me begging for a normal sequencer so that I could build this groove in stereo. (Sample time and quality has to be traded for loop duration).
It is nearly possible by using the peformance zones alongside the step and phrase sequencers but this track uses two "synth" sounds. (When setting up zones only zone 1 can be a "synth" sound.)
Another idea instead of creating a workstation could be to increase the sample quality and duration and create looper tracks (with separate faders and stop/start buttons) like the Roland RC300/505.
This is very much a "have your cake and eat it solution" but it would be amazing - just imagine. It would be the vidal sassoon of live looping all in one box.
Peace!
