  1. Hello Casio Forums,

I have been playing my XW-G1 live with a cover band for the last three years.  I play half our sets on the synth and half on guitar.  Does anyone use a personal mixer to tweak sound live?  What set up do you use live to get a great stereo BEST QUALITY Sound?  I have noticed live that I am constantly battling different performances on volume, depending on tones, i.e. brass, bass, piano, analog sounds.  Is there a way I can "set it and forget it?"  My brass sounds all sound full of treble with little mid range or bass.  I bought my board used off ebay.  Sometimes I think there may be an issue with oscillators or something internally that is giving me a different quality than what I hear on Youtube from you professionals.  I am very picky about sound and want to sound the best possible.  Willing to spend some money to do so and would like to keep using my XW-G1 live.

    Thanks for advice!

  2. Hey xw users.  I play xw-g1 live for a cover band and am always struggling to duplicate tones and sounds from tunes we play.  Anyone know how I can tweak a whistle sound as in Maroon 5's "Moves Like Jagger"?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am a total numbskull when it comes to programming sounds.

    Cheers!

  3. Any suggestions on how to create and trigger the bomb sound from the great Gap Band song "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"?  Also, would LOVE to hear how to create the rising sound on Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk.  I created a tone for that and at the moment do not even remember how I did that.  It isn't even close to the recording sound though.

    Many thanks to any support!

  4. I would really like to hear some input on how to get the best live sound out of my XW-G1.  I have used a behringer kdx amp with 15 inch and horn, a monitor and also go through P.A.  However, I am not at all an expert on sound engineering and am very sensitive to tone and all.  I would really like to hear some other live performers setups for self monitoring and for getting the best sound out to front of house.

    Thanks in advance

  5. Can anyone help this rookie XW-G1 programmer with coming up with a sound much like Prince used for songs like "Kiss" and Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk", "That's what I like" and "24K"?  I cannot come close.  My polysynth stuff sounds very trebly and am radio'ish.

    Would truly appreciate help.

    Thanks!

  6. Hi Geoff,

As Brad said, the standard way to create a swell would be with an amp envelope, unfortunately the envelopes for the PCM melody tones are so minimal (only attack and release) you can't use that technique in this case. But there are many other approaches.

You could route the PCM tone through the solo synth, section 3.4.3.3 in AlenK's XW Companion Rev 1, and do a total filter swell instead. This will probably swell the timbre more than the volume, so you may not want that.

So you could set up one of the knobs to control volume and record yourself playing one cycle of a swell in the phrase sequencer, see section 5.1 in XW Companion Rev 1.

Or, given that this is the G1 specific forum, you could sample the PCM tone in the vicinity of the keys you want to play, and play the sample in stead. The sampler has the full suite of amp envelope parameters available to each split and is a great way of expanding the limited envelopes available on PCM melody tones.

    Hello Brett,

I will mess around with these ideas.  The band I am in is covering the Weeknd "I Can't Feel My Face", I would like to create as much of the swell sound that I can.  Appreciate the information from you.

  7. Can anyone tell me how to create volume swells and assign either to a controller or the mod wheel?

    Appreciate any help!

    Geoff

Actually, what I am thinking is adding volume swell to tone so that I do not have to use a controller.  Like with Pads, but would like to have stronger swells.

    Thanks again,
    Geoff

  8. Can anyone help me with emulating the sort of setup that Ralph Maten did with "I am Ralph and I do Synth"?

I don't understand if I create a tone using a recording and then use the tone with the keyboard.  If that is how it works, how do I save the recording a user tone?

    Thanks for help!

  9. I get it.  Will check DSP, I may have too much on.  Also, I will try out bringing the samples down to mono and tweak with the external sound as opposed to having the synth create the chorus and stereo.  A true newbie to synth programming here.  Thanks for all your help guys!

  10. Yes, strange huh?  The two vocal tones created from wavs are converted in data editor and converted in stereo.  Maybe that is what is causing it?  It seems to happen when I am playing the voice tones on keys while playing the brass part.

  11. B.P.M.? Thank you.

The performance does not use step sequencer and has no drum track.  I have Zones 1,2 set up with a user wav tone created from a wav sample of a vocal part of a song  The other two zones are set up with brass overlays.  Multi-function key is enabled and has one key set to play a phrase.  Lastly, I have a loop assigned.  Doesn't seem like too much going on.  I bought this xw-g1 used on ebay late last year and am impressed with its functionality.  Hoping there is nothing happening within the computer to cause issues.

I have been playing along with the song with my iphone connected to the g1 through the audio in and using headphones.

Thank you both for help on this.

  12. I have been working on a performance with multi-key and a loop sample.  The machine has locked up several times and the only way to unlock is to unplug and plug it back in.  What would be causing this?

    Thanks for any help.
