  1. Hi Mike, Since the manuals are so lacking in detail, could you give us a quick tutorial on how to create a basic drum pattern and how to save it, then call it up and trigger it in a live situation. I'm sure it's probably a simple procedure, but I have no idea how to begin, nor can I find any info in the manuals. A simple repetitive swing pattern and Bossa Nova pattern are what I'm interested in. Thanks for your help with this. Looking forward to doing this so I can fire my drummer. (-:
  2. Thanks Mike! I suspected it couldn't be done. I was hoping I could control two sounds on the same slider in the manner you had described since I need ALL the other sliders for other sounds. If it ever turns out that there is a way to have viable Acoustic Piano and Vibes sounds in a HexLayer, please let me know. I'll keep monitoring all your posts and blogs. Thanks again!
  3. Mike...thanks for sticking with me on this. I feel like a total idiot. I HAVE done ALL the steps you mention, BUT I come to a dead end where I can't figure out how to add the SECOND sound. Maybe I'm trying to do something that's not possible. You just indicated that: "this would be most useful if the sound you're trying to control is a HexLayer". Are you saying that it can ONLY BE DONE using HexLayers? Here's what I'm trying to do: Have Slider 1 control the Volume of TWO sounds. I have Piano sound on and at FULL volume when slider is all the way DOWN. NOW I'm trying to add a Vibes sound that will be at FULL volume when slider is all the way UP. The slider is all set and functioning, BUT I can't figure out HOW to add the VIBES SOUND (It is T2)! I don't see ANY way to choose a sound when I am on that menu page. I hope I'm explaining it correctly. P.S. Thanks for the info on Velocity sensitive organ sounds!
  4. I'm trying to set up one slider so that it controls TWO sounds simultaneously exactly as you described above. The one aspect of the procedure that I CAN'T find is HOW (and WHERE) do you ENTER the SECOND sound. I remember seeing your posting on the procedure somewhere but I can't find it anywhere right now. But, IIRC, I don't think it mentioned specifically how, and in what menu item, the second sound is actually added? The other parts of the procedure (setting the volume levels of the 2 sounds etc.) is no problem. Thanks Mike!
  5. On another issue Mike: Early on I asked if any of the Organs are Velocity Sensitive. You said no, but they can be made to be. I just tried a couple - adjusted the Velocity Sensitivity to the max (+63) but there doesn't seem to be ANY....they sound the same no matter what number I set the Vel. Sens. to. What am I missing? Having velocity sensitive organ sounds are one of the most important reasons I bought the PX-5S. My "volume chops" are in my fingers, not in my feet, since I'm a pianist and not a "real" organist. Hoping there's a simple solution to what I need to do. Thanks for your help with this!

  7. I don't know what's going on..... This is the SECOND time a post of mine got posted TWICE. I DEFINITELY clicked on "Post" only ONCE! I can't find a way to delete a post, so I tried to EDIT it, but it won't let you submit a modified post without any content. So, I'm submitting this paragraph to at least get rid of the lengthy post. Anyone know what's going on here? It's like Midi Hell invades the Message Boards.
  8. Thanks so much for explaining all this Mike, and for pointing out the various possibilities I can use! Pointing out that <<<<<PX-5S unlike most keyboards......... you can switch between Stage Settings without sound stopping. So you can sustain one sound while selecting another.>>>>> opens up a whole lot of different ways to go! Suggesting this: Zone 1: Custom HexLayer with Strings, Pad, Bass Zone 2: EP - this gives you choice of sounds in the EP category and other EPs that were created in HexLayers Zone 3: Organ Zone 4: Piano brings up the question, "HOW do you create a Custom Hex Layer?" I'd like to give that a try. Hoping you're keeping track of all your detailed posts so you can compile them into "Mike Martin's Ultimate PX-5S Tips And Secrets". It'll be #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list in no time!
  9. Sorry for the double post. I only clicked "Post" ONCE! But strangely, EVERYTHING doubled up! Somehow, I wound up in Midi Hell just by posting on this forum. Weird!
  10. Thanks Mike. Every time you post, I learn something new. I wish you wrote the manuals! I played through all the Hex-layer tones on the board....nothing I can use for my purposes, although all I heard was the total sound - I don't know how to hear the individual layers (assuming that they do exist). Here's an example of the 6 sounds I would like to control the volume of with the 6 sliders: Slider 1 - Piano Slider 2 - Bass Slider 3 - Strings Slider 4 - Pad Slider 5 - EP Slider 6 - Jazz Organ (Velocity Sensitive) Zone 1: Sliders 1 & 5 Zone 2: Slider 2 Zone 3: Sliders 3 & 4 & 6 Zone 4: Not used Is there some way (or workaround) to allow me to do this with these sounds? Thanks!!
  11. Are you saying that you HAVE TO use HexLayers to get up to the 6 sound total since there are only four zones? I tried using 6 NON-HexLayers Tones. I couldn't figure out how to get the 6's volumes controlled individually by sliders 1 - 6. When I got up to the 5th and 6th tones, TWO DIFFERENT sliders wound up controlling the volume of sound 5. (I'm assuming it has something to do with the fact that there is a max of 4 zones). Mike, you said it COULD be done, but I can't figure out how to assign ONLY ONE slider to control the volume of sound 5 (or 6). What am I doing wrong? Again, here's what I want to do: Slider 1: Sound 1, Zone 1 Slider 2: Sound 2, Zone 2 Slider 3: Sound 3, Zone 3 Slider 4: Sound 4, Zone 4 Slider 5: Sound 5, Zone 4 Slider 6: Sound 6, Zone 4 I want to control the volume of each of the 6 sounds INDEPENDENTLY by the 6 sliders. Is this possible, or would there be a problem controlling the volume of sounds 4, 5 and 6 INDEPENDENTLY because they are all assigned to the same zone? Every screen I saw had one of the four zones listed on the screen, so evidently any slider that controls a zone will control ANY sound that was set up using the same zone, as seen on the screen. Hope I'm describing the situation clearly. Thanks!
  12. Thanks for that info Mike.......that's GREAT news for me (actually THE reason I bought the PX-5S). And I HAD read in the manual that the hex layers had to be on Zone 1 or 2. For me, for now, I'm just planning on using 6 "normal" sounds. I can't wait to set it up so I can mix the volumes of 6 sounds, live in real time on the gig - I won't tell you how many DECADES I have been waiting for this capability on a good pro, lightweight, hammer action board! Thanks!
  13. Hi Mike! Can you control 6 different sounds, 1 sound for each of the 6 sliders? Or is this limited to 4 because of the 4 zone limit? Here's what I want to do: Slider 1: Sound 1, Zone 1 Slider 2: Sound 2, Zone 2 Slider 3: Sound 3, Zone 3 Slider 4: Sound 4, Zone 4 Slider 5: Sound 5, Zone 4 Slider 6: Sound 6, Zone 4 I want to control the volume of each of the 6 sounds INDEPENDENTLY by the 6 sliders. Is this possible, or would there be a problem controlling the volume of sounds 4, 5 and 6 INDEPENDENTLY because they are all assigned to the same zone? Thanks! This is probably an elementary question for people who understand Midi.....but Midi keeps me up nights!
  14. Mine is already on its way to me...arriving in two days. Xmas in April! Thanks for all the help and support Mike during the long waiting period. (-:
  15. Just wondering - are there any Velocity Sensitive Organ patches on the PX-5S? Since I'm a pianist and not an organ player, my volume chops are in my fingers rather than in a foot pedal. I'm always looking for organ patches which are velocity sensitive. Sometimes my keyboards had them and sometimes they didn't.
  16. PROS: Overlapping Zones. Rotary knobs, and, especially, the 6 sliders. Improved sounds. WISH LIST: 76 key version, hopefully bringing weight down to 20 lbs. or less. Rhythm Pattern section with variations etc. Slightly lighter keybed action. Larger screen display.
  17. Post what you like about the features included in the new PX-5S and what features you wish were included. Then Mike can take all this input and create the perfect PX-6S for next year.
  18. I've never had any experience with Sequencers or Arpeggiators. Not sure how they relate to creating simple repetitive drum patterns like Swing, Bossa, Slow Rock, etc. Assuming that the PX-5S does NOT have built in drum patterns (sigh!), can Mike tell me how easily drum patterns can be created, saved within performances, and triggered (and tempo chosen) on the fly during live performance? And, can Patterns as well as VARIATIONS associated with each Pattern be easily saved within performances and triggered like on boards that have a Rhythm Pattern section. In other words, can a Rhythm Pattern section be created on the PX-5S if it doesn't already have one - or at least can patterns (and variations) be easily accessed and adjusted while in any particular performance? Mike, I enjoyed all your video demos from the show! Hope you can answer my concerns about Drum Patterns - I didn't see any reference to it in any of your videos. Also, will the manual be available on the Casio website anytime soon! THANKS! Sonny
  19. Is there any way to use all the sliders to control the volume of different channels IN REAL TIME, on the fly? For example, when playing in a live situation, I may want to raise (or lower) the volume of the drum pattern, or a particular part of the background arrangement, or maybe the whole background at once. I hate to see all those sliders just sitting there and not be of use as a mixer while I'm playing on a gig. Thanks for any help with this!
  20. I agree, but WHY is it not listed in the specs here: http://www.casiomusicgear.com/products/menu_privia/PX-5S Another concern of mine: Can anyone tell us if the action is the exact same as the PX-350 or has it been tweaked, or replaced with a totally different action?
  21. I noticed that too! I'm sure hoping I'm wrong about it not having Rhythm Patterns! But, even if it does, I still think it's over-priced. All the hype isn't a justification for that price.
  22. I think it's a bit over-priced. I'm still hoping for a 76 key version - maybe that will put it in the right price range. Quick question: The PX-350 has Rhythm Patterns. The PX-5S doesn't seem to have Rhythm Patterns listed in any of the published specs I have seen. Is it possible that they left that out of this supposedly "all-purpose" performance keyboard?? Hard to believe! Yup...a bit over-priced. Also, has anyone divulged what that mystery black section behind the upper register is for? There was a lot of speculation about it, but I haven't seen the final answer yet. Thanks!
  23. Sorry to hear it's 88 keys! I'll keep dreaming about 76 key versions with lottsa sliders.
  24. Forgot to sign in. The above post was mine. Sorry!
  25. If it's not a 76 key Privia, I think Casio is missing the boat! Also hoping for a slightly lighter keyboard hammer action. And....more sliders (or knobs) to control each zone on the fly. Hopefully FOUR zones!
