She Drives Stage Setting, phrase an

About This File

This is a stage setting for a song about a lady that drives some cannibals crazy. These cannibals were fine and young.

The drum tone has been uploaded as well. It was in drum user 20 slot entitled "She Drives". The drum tone will be in zone 1 of the stage setting. It has been disabled in zone 1 of the stage setting since it will only be necessary for the phrase (also uploaded as "She Drives"). The common setting for this stage setting has a tempo setting of 109 (tap tempo set to original artist recording), and the phrase is the "She Drives" phrase attached and placed in user 108.

There were two parts in creation of this stage setting that were particularly fun to tweak. The first was the snare pop modified on the drum file (pull up the tone from the data editor and you will note the DSP has been intentionally disabled on note E2 "power snare", and the note has been tweaked on the coarse and fine tune settings to provide the tightened tenor snare sound).

The second challenge was to modify the zone 2 hex layer to provide a zone split within the hex layer. You will note the various key ranges on the 6 layers to facilitate this task. The layers within the hex tone are as follows:

1) Gm Sweep Pad

2) ElecPiano2 1

3) Clean Guitar

4) OverdriveGt2

5) OverdriveGt2

6) GMOverdrive2

Sliders 1 through 6 control the layer volumes for each layer in the order as per above. The DSP was intentionally disabled on the first two layers since the effect is distortion. It took some adjustment of the Amp envelope on the GM Sweep Pad to come in faster on the sweep to match the original recording. It also required the 4 different guitar layers with modified Amp envelopes to more effectually cover the various gates and compression of the distorted guitar tracks throughout the song (especially the intro distortion guitar part). Using the volume sliders pulled down on slider 2 and slider 4 during the intro part allow you to cut those parts initially, but remember to boost them in time for the chorus!

In conclusion, the stage setting is set up as follows:

Zone 1: drums in zone 1 (only for the phrase with zone 1, disabled).

Zone 2 (key range / Eb2 to B5): the hex layer is in zone 2 (split into two zones itself with a lower zone for the DX FM patch, no DSP, layered with the 4 guitars with varying amps and distortion, in addition to the upper zone GM sweep pad, no DSP).

Zone 3 (key range / C-1 to D2): synth bass 3

Zone 4 (key range / C6 to G9): clean guitar (a little delay for DSP just like the intro and recurring verses / octave guitar D)

It really helps to pull this one up in the data editor to see all the splits and tweaks. This was a fun project showing just how versatile the PX-5S can be when used as a synth and workstation!
