  1. You can use one of the sliders for volumen control instead. I think this is one of the feature which 5 justifies the "Pro"

You will not feel remorse. It is like a single cloud on the blue heaven.
We have almost everything we need and this for a very low price.
You have saved money to add an external equipment like Behringer FCB1010, Rocktron Midi Mate or

MIDI Solutions Pedal to MIDI Converter or the Digitech Control 2

The Midi floor boards offer some other functions but, I don't know they will be able to send the required MIDI Data for changing stage settings on the PX 5S, or command effects on the sounds. Maybe some of the users her own such a board and will be able to report.

  2. Hi all,

here we can collect some tips and tricks and "How To" hints.

If the topic already is mentioned in the forum or on Facebook, we should use a hyperlink to the corresponding thread.

If the tip is complex, please give a link to the source.

If you want to discuss the tips we should use the Facebook group.

If we find a better way to describe the topic the owner of the topic could edit his post here in the forum.
    This keeps tips short.

So I start with this item:

Howto Rename a StageSetting with the PC-Editor

    Source 2013-06-13 on facebook

I just found out how to rename a stage setting:
Use Tab "Stage Setting". There you find the Data selector.
Load a StageSetting which should be renamed and then edit the Name in the Edit field right hand side of the Load Data Button.
    Then you have to pr
ess the "Save as User Data" Button. This is the button with a green arrow to a memory chip.

There is a "Rename function" for StageSettings on the Editors "Transfer" page when double clicking a setting name.
But unfortunately it only works for the left "PC" side and the PC-File name.
If you drag it to the right "PX5S" side you will notice that the old name before renaming will be displayed.

So if renaming directly on the keyboard is too inconvenient, and you have already launched the editor on your computer,

use this workaround to rename a stage setting.

  3. Mike has rejected this in Facebook forum. I understand that these parameters are tied to the sound. That means: Adjusting 80 for ambience could be on the PX5S much and on your external MIDI device too less. So if this parameter would be send out you would change the sound which was programmed on the external device. In many cases this could be also unwanted. As as decision Casio has selected not to send it on recalling the StageSetup, but to send it on moving an assigned slider, if necessary.
So have you tested the second solution if you still need an automatical setting with the songseqencer. It may be an alternative, if you need the sliders for a range.

Start recording a new phrase. Move a slider for adjusting the PX5S Level for ambience (or pan). This starts the recording automatically.

Stop the record with the record button.

    Save the phrase.

    Press Song and Edit.

    Then press Track Edit Ent

Press the INSERT Key (above the Number 1 of Stage Setting)

Press Exit an go to Song Mixer

After Enter scroll down and setup the prgram Change for your external device Volume pan etc. Delay Reverb ,whatever you need.

Don't forget to swich MIDI OUT to "On"

Save the "song" and give a name for your external setting.

Then press START to "play" the song. Now the external MIDI device will receive the commandos.

After that check if the PX5S sounds are still ok.

If yes you will be able to play, otherwise call a stagesetup, wich will set the parameters for the PX5S.

Please check if this is practicable for you

  4. Note: A Song of the Songsequencer will send these MIDI Data when it starts. Maybe you can use the SongSequecer to setup your external device with the requested parameters. You only need to assign a very short phrase with one usual MIDI command (e.g. move the modulation wheel). Then instert it for Trac 1..8. Afterwards, you can assign the chorus, reverb and pan to the Tracks, to control your external MIDI device.

    Ralf

  5.  Edit: Now I understand why we have an option to save the "tone". Even if it is saved within a stage setup,

it might be usefull to have a tone which you have created for one Zone in another Zone or in a totally different StageSetup.

So save the "tone" you have yust created to by pressing "Write" and then selecting "tone" to a userdefind place.

Now you can recall a different StageSetup and load that tone for a zone.

If you give this StageSetup to someone else, he/she must not have the saved "tone, because all parameters are stored within the Stagesetup.

Its is just for transporting all Tone Data to another setup.

    Correct?

  6. If you connect an external MIDI device to the MIDI out you can play the PX5S internal sounds and/or the external device.

If you change the StageSetup on the PX5S you might notice that the sounds on the external device will change too.

You can assign the extenal Soundnumber for each zone with the Parameter "edit, Zone Edit, Midi Edit" and the scroll down.

Here you have to set "Prog & Bank" to Prg or Bnk (depends on your external device)

Below that you will find "Prog & Bank Edit" Press enter and select the Sound Number for your external device.

If you later call the stage setting, it will assign the correct soundnumbers.

But if you don't want that the sound of the external device will change you have to select "off" for "Prog & Bank Out"

This is a setting for each Stage Setup and each Zone which can be turned to "off", if you don't want the change the sound.

But there might be  a Problem for one channel.

If have not changed anything within "SYS Settings" you will probable notice that the external sound will change when you call a stage setup

If you go switch the  "Prog & Bank Out" parameter to "off" it will still change the sounds on channel 1 depending on the stage setup number.

The reason is a command which is send out before the Program Change Message.

This command selects the StageSetup on a external CasioDevice.

But if you have no compatible Casio Device connected unfortunately it changes your sound.

    Workarround:

To prevent this go to SYS SETTINGS, MIDI, Scroll down and select "Basic Chl" and change it to 16.

In this case the "Stage Set.Chg" which is described on Page E40 will be transmitted to channel 16 which is in most cases not used.

Note Even with this setting the extenal sounds change if you use the keys  "-/No"  and "+Yes"

The manufacturer will say: This is not a bug "IT'S A FEATURE"

@Mike please add a new requirement for the next firmware: The Parameter "Stage Set. Chg" must have the additional value "off"

  7. Yes I can reproduce that behaviour.

I guess it is a bug. It works like a the stagesetting filter for MIDI OUT.

Maybe Casio thought the values for the controllers should only set the internal sounds and you want to have different Chorus/reverb settings on the external MIDI device.

But in fact If you have assigned a knob or slider the information will be send via MIDI

If you use the zone with "Gen Out = off" or the whole keyboard completely in "local-off" mode, it makes no sense to filter these settings.

So this is a topic which should open a ticket to Casio for the next firmware to fix

--> The settings for Controllers #Bx which are assigned to the zone have to be send via MIDI , when a StageSetting is recalled

@Mike would you do that for us?

Workarround: Use the slider for the requested parameter (reverb, chorus) and set the range to the requested value.  Min = Max = your requested value

(You can assigen two parameters to one slider !)

If you have recalled a stage setting just move the slider a bit, and you will get the requested value

    Best regards

    Ralf

  8. At the moment I am not sure, if the Stage Setting tansports even the tone data. So when you press "Write" , you can select "Stage Setting" or "Tone".
What is to do if you have modified the "tone"?
In the discussed StageSetting it uses Hex U 50 for Zone 1. This is a Hex Layer with 6 Oscillators. The Name on the Button in Zone 1 Tone but if you press the button it is called "Hex E Piano1" . I am a little confused. I guess this was the template where the user started to modify .

If the StageSetup transports the changed Tone Data, for what do we need to store them separately?

  9. I just found out how to rename a stage setting on the  pc Editor. Use Tab "Stage Setting". There you find the Data selector. Load a StageSetting which should be renamed and then edit the Name in the Edit field right hand side of the Load Data Button. Then you have to press the "Save as User Data" Button. This is the button with a green arrow to a memory chip.

Normal parameters are send directly to the keyboard when you change it in the pc editor,

But the name will only be transmitted within a whole data dump

  10. Hi all,

we find in the download section

2 Files for "Ain't Nobody"  from JimmyJames and IM29

And one phrase "JK's Sweet L2"

For better understanding install the phrase from Jimmyjames and the StageSetting fom IM29

I tried to install and had some problems. I am not one of the 2 uploaders, but I think is a good idea to discuss here which problems we have to import such files to our keyboard and learn about the restrictions of the editor.

If you install the file from IM29 http://www.casiomusicforums.com/index.php?/files/file/49-aint-nobody/

    you will notice that

    1. The filename contains HTML code for characters
Aint't Nobody.3 ist displayed as Ain&39;t. Nobody 3.ZPF. ---> So we should not only use standard characters.

    2.  The uploader  IM29 tried to rename the StageSetting within the PC Edtior. When I installed it on my keyboard the Name was "JK's Sweet L2"

Unfortunately renaming in the PCEditor or the filename does not rename the StageSetting Name if you transfer it back to the keyboard.

---> We need a fix for the PC Editor. This must be a known bug, because I found in the manual, that renaming does not rename the Names inside the keyboard. I had a look inside the file and found the "JK's Sweet L2" inside, but not "Ain't Nobody". So it must possible and we demand a fix!

@Mike Would you please assign this to the Casio testmanager. Thank you.

    3.  It was unclear where to put the phrase in.

The Stage setting has just pointers to the Number, where the phrase is located to the piano.

In the ZPF file it points to U-102. So If you want to put the ZPH file (the Phrase) to a different locaton, we can do this,

but then we have to edit the stage setting

Now: Where should the phrase be used?

I think it was made for ZONE1

And it is a Arpeggio phrase. -> The assignment U-102 was made for Arpeggio. This you can see, if you press the Arpeggio Button long

If you had put the phrase somewhee else (in my case I put it into 111) I corrected it there to 111.

Now you have to turn off the button "phrase"

and then turn on the Button "Arpeggio" and press the Button SYS Setting at the same time, so that you'l get the HOLD function (Arpeggio flashing)

Now if you press the lowest key on your keyboard, the arpeggio should be heard. If you had used the StageSetting filter for Tempo, you have to adjust the Tempo to 200.

Now you can play the Zone 2 in a small range above the lowest key with a string sound.

From e-1 upwards there is a clavi sound up to G2.

Above that key you hear nothing if you play on these key. IM29 has configured that for playing an external MIDI device.

I wondered why we have several places to assign phrases and found out.

The Phrase which you select in Stage Setting, Common Edit, Phrase, assigns the number you get if you press the "PHRASE" button.

The PHRASE Button will play phrases only for ZONE 1 (correct me If I am wrong)

The Arpeggio Button can be pressed long. Then you will be able to select a phrase or arpeggo for Zone 1 - 4 by pressing the Zone/Part/Track -+ Buttons. This setting you will also find if you press Edit, StageSetting, ZoneEdit, Controller Edit, (scroll down) and then Arpeggio Select

Scoll down and there you will find the "Arp Phrase Numb" and the Name "Ain't Nobody".

Same you will find in the EditorSoftware, but on the StageSetting Tab and "Zone" Tab you must scroll down to "Arpeggio"

The Phrasesetting , which you find on the "Common" tab, corresponds to the phrase number which is mentioned above (Zone1 Phrase)

So we have a very complex machine, but mighty!

Maybe IM29 could use the SongSequencer to record a 3 track demo, for the song. This would be a great demo for the capacities.

    Best greetings from Ralf

  11. Update to the problem that the tempo of a song changes if you select a different Stage Setup. I found out today that this behaviour can be prevented by the "Stage Setup Filter". If you go to"Sys Settings, General, Stage Set Filter" you will find the parameter "Tempo". Switch it to "On". This prevents the tempo been changed if you select a different stage setup.

  12. Yes of course, but you were asking how to record your voice on the USB Stick which plugs into the PX5S.

It is recorded on one track in WAV File format together with the internal Sound.

Your idea of using a DAW just for amplifying the mic is curious, and I would not recommend this, but lets discuss it.

If you plug the Microphone to the "Mic In" of your computer and insert the "AudioOut" or "headphone out" of your computer to the AudioIn of the PX5 you will get a higher level for the microphone and would be able to mix and record it with the PX5S.

But your soundcard must be able to  "monitor" the input signal directly to the output. It is an more expensive variant to amplify a microphone with the computer but also possible. This soundcard normally will be blocked by this function and additionally can not be used by the DAW software. So if you have a DAW Software, you must have a independent second AudioInput for the computer, because the first AudioInput and AudioOut are used for amplifying the mic. If your computer has 2 independent AudioInputs your DAW Software will be able to record voice and Sound from the Keyboard on the second entry and you would not need the USB recording function on the PX5S.

  13. The question is aswered here. Use a 6,3 mm jack. But you will find in most cases the mic will be too silent. So use an preamplifier. The cheapest I found is this one. You will able to mix an external MIDI device with your voice and then connect it to the PX5S.

An other cheap alternative is the Behringer MIC100. There is a video review

    .

But I suggest a better one with an internal effect for your voice, because you can not use the internal hall for audio which comes into the PX5. These signals only pass the equalizer and compressor.

To get voltage for an external amplifier it may be possible to use an USB 1->2 adapter. You can also get voltage from the batteryslot. Here we have 7 V. But I don't know an adapter for that. This would be a cludge. You will have to know how much power consumption you need an be sure that the USB Port of the PX5S will offer that.

    Ralf

  14. The Inputsignal must have LINE Level. A Microphone does not provide this much higher level.

You have to use a preamp. This will help you to adjust the level of the voice.

Under special conditions you are able to use the Audio In with a dynamic microphone.

It is not made for microphone input, and the internal sounds must be lowered.

I would not recommend such configuration, but it will work as as workarround if there temporary is no pre-amplifier present.

    - test a dynamic microphone which needs no phantom power.

    - put it to the left audioinput (L/Mono) to have it centered.

    - press SYS- Settings and select Generator and then "External Volume" : Here turn it to 127 (maximum)

    - press exit until you can edit the volume of your sound.

    - If the mic can be heard, but is still to silent in comparison to the sound you play, then try to reduce the volume of your sound

    - For this you also use the stageSetting Edit meno or Mixer menu which you find on "SYS-Settings Generator and then select "Mixer Part 1-16":

    - There you have to adjust the "Volume" of the used parts (1-4 ore more if you use the Songsequencer) to a low value.

-> In my case i had to turn it down from 127 to about 30 to have about the same level as the microphone.

Again: It is not recomended, because you have to edit each stage setting for 1 - 4 Zones, but glad to know it is possible.

There maybe products on the market like a DI-Box which transform the low mic level to a higher. But normally you need an active preamp.

    Ralf

  15. Hi,

For example I have used the Audio-In to record a Mp3 Song which came from my smartphone on the USB stick. (YES, it samples the Audo IN Signal to a WAVE file on the USB stick!)

Then I was able to play the redorded Song  during the exercise hour with my band without putting a cable to the PX5S and looking for a place to put the phone on.

The Signal on the Audio-In goes through the equalizer and compressor (of the PX5S) to the Audio-Out and will be mixed to the internal sounds.

If you use an external MIDI Expander, you do not need a mixer.

The Output of both devices will be under control of ONE Level knob for you  and you will only need one (stereo) cable to the main band mixer.

    Ralf

  16. It is not necessary to use an external  event editior.

Within the DataEdtior for the PX-5S they implemented an "Event Filter" i guess exactly for those problems.

Near the field where you selected channel 10 to filter the drum track there is a pull down menu.

Scroll down an select CC007 Volume and press the ">>" Button.  If you notice more problems you should add other filters.

Then drag the file to convert again, and then use the "Transfer" option to send it to the PX-5S.

    Ralf

  17. Hi,

It is possible to do a 8 Tack  multitrack recording, AND hearing the previous recording, by following these steps:

    - Record a Phrase, or use a converted 16 Bar Drum Track.--> put it in a Phrase e.g. 200

    - Create a new song. and press the insert key (located near on Stage Setting1 button)

and select phrase 200 with no repeatings and no transpose (this advice just as example)

    - Store and name the song as "Songtest1" on position 150

    - Now if you press song the display "Songtest1" and if you press "play" it will play the recorded track.

But here you will notice that it might use a different sound.

Note that the SongRecorder is independent from the StageSettings and the the Sounds which are configured with the StageSetting.

So you have to create once an 8 Track song as an template to have 8 Sounds for the recording.

This is your "StageSetting" for the TrackRecorder. If you use it, then you will get a copy of the template as a new song

To create the Template, press "Edit" (when "Song" lights) and you will go into the "Song Edit" mode.

Then press key down to go into Song Mixer and turn knob 2 in the fields MSB and ProgramChange to select the sound you have recorded.

Have a look into the last pages of the "tutorial". Here you find the corresponding MSB and ProgamChange Numbers for the sound.

At least you find the name of the sound in the 3rd line to control if you have adjusted the correct Numbers.

Tip: If you want to use Track 1 for Drums, you have to select 120 as MSB and 000 or higher for the Drumset.

How to just that I have figured out here.

Then press the "+" Key, which you find near the Tempo key, to switch the Track.

Now you will notice that MSB and ProgammChange can be adjusted to a different sound.

Unfortunately I could not find out why I can not use the Hex Layers for that. Combination MSB 97 does not work.  A bug?

Now we start a multitrack recording.

First we select Song (alread having one Track)

Then press Phrase twice (-> flashing "Record")

Then press Start: You will hear Track 1 playing and you can record your track.

If you press record again it will stop recording.

If you are not satisfied, press phrase again to get record flashing and start a next trial.

If you are satisfied, press write and select the number for the new phrase (201).

Before pressing Enter to save you can rename the Phrase.

Now if you press "Start" you will hear the just recorded phrase, because "Phrase" is glowing

Next step will be to put this phrase into the next track.

Turn off "Phrase", Press "Song" and "Edit"

    Press Enter for "Track Edit"

Press the + Key (near the Tempo Key) to goto Zone 2

Press "insert" and turn knob 2 and +- Keys to select phrase 201

If you don't hear the correct sound, you must press "Exit" and Select "Song Mixer" and select a different sound.

If you had pressed "Start" you can hear your recorded tracks and can adjust others parameters like volume and pan hall etc.

Now press Exit , exit until you are back on top of the menu to save the song with the write button.

You will get a new version of your song, with one more track it you don't change the number of the song back.

If we can not assign a Hexlayer Sound to a Track or need a 9th track, you will be able record a phrase as a last step and play the Phrase with glowing button for this last track

Now you are able to record the full song with the audiorecorder.

The tempo is stored in the Song and must be adjusted there.

    Best greetings from Ralf

  18. What do you need?

A sequencer, a data editior, a program which sends program changes?

Have a look at the app "Set list maker"  (in the iTunes Store) if it is, what you want.

Which MIDI Interface do you use?

    Ralf

  19. I would say the phrase option within a StageSetup was made for playing with the main sound which is configured for Zone 1.

Last week  I had configured an arpeggio for Zone 1 with keyrange from C- to A0.

This arpeggio is configured as NOTE[FIX] and will play 032 Drum Loop 2 with the Hold function continuously.

Zone 2 will start ab Bb0. So there is no conflict between the zones.

This is the 3rd Method to get playing drums on the PX-5S.

@Sunny did you solve your connection problem now? I found out, that when I connect within my Sequencer program to the CASIO USB MIDI IN and OUT the DATA Edior which runs at the same time also will prompt "no connetion". So check if you have a second application running which takes the USB MIDI exclusive.

Did you try my Drum-Demosong ? Is it running at your keyboard? I guess you have to store phrase to Number 104, because in the song I assigned the phrase which was on position 104 at that time. I don't think it will look by name, if you store the phrase on a different position. Otherwise you must change the phrasenumber in the song to that divergent position.

Note: If you play the Drum Demosong the Phrasebutton must be "off" (no light).

@Mike: Most StageSettings are programmed with "normal" sounds on Zone1. So almost each StageSetup has to be changed if you want to use a playing drum loop AND you want to use the Phrase function within the StageSetup like you have proposed.

Is it possible to move the Configuration for Zone1 to a higher, If that higher Zone also is used we have to move all  the parameters to the next one. In some cases Zone 1 - Zone 3 are used, so we have to move Zone 1 to Zone 4 and then configure Zone 1 for Drums and edit the keyrange you described above. Each StageSetup assigns a Phrase and the tempo. This could be much complex, and if you change the StageSetup during playing it will  assign the pattern and tempo of the other StageSetup. So please talk to the Casiopeople it they could make a better solution.

With the Songsequencer we have an alternative which allows to change the Stagesetup during playing the drums without stopping them.

The StageSetup tempo of a stage setup should not change the tempo of a running sequencer. It can also be detected by the lighting Phrase button. It "Phrase" is not "on" it does not change the Phrase, but unfortunately it changes the tempo, which was assigned for the StageSetting's Phrase.

This should be an request for a future firmware update. Thank you.

Update: This behaviour can be prevented by the "Stage Setup Filter". If you go to"Sys Settings, General, Stage Set Filter" you will find the parameter "Tempo". Switch it to "On". This prevents the tempo been changed if you select a different stage setup.

  20. Hello,

yes I agree that should be easier. But unfortunately it depends on a free Zone1 which must be configured for drum sounds.

Steps for the method "Using the phrase attribute of a StageSetting"

You have to convert MIDI Drum files to Phrases. (same as in songmethod)

you have to convert all your stage settings, beause only ZONE 1 supports drum sounds.

I don't know how to move Zone1 to an upper one with all the parameters by one click (maybe it is possible Mike will know)

If you have more than 2 Zones it might be impossible, because Zone 3 and 4 don't support HexLayer Sounds.

So you will not be able to convert all the sounds.

I don't feel this to be easy.

You are able to select a phrase and a tempo for the stage setting, and this drumphrase repeats without end.

You have to adjust the keyboard range for the drum sounds.

You have to play on Zone2 or upper and if you want to change the sound you have to select the higher zone first.

You have no chance to start with precount then use variation1, fillIn, bridge, Chrous, fillin, variation2 and so on.

I guess at the moment the method with the song sequencer seems to solve that.

You only have to configure once a DrumSong.

(This might be complex, but I uploaded a demophrase and a song with this parameters here)

If you have stored this song in position 100, you are able to change the phrase to get a different drumloop.

Then if you press "Write", the PX stores it automatically on a new position.

That's all you have to do.

So I think it can be easy, too.

    The advantage is:

    - You can use almost all you StagePreset with a playing drum loop,

    - You can even use it with StageSettings with 4 Zones.

There is one thing you have to consider:

If you change the StageSetting during playing a song, the tempo will be taken from the tempo which is assigned to the StageSetting.

But if you start the Song again you have the original tempo again.

This behaviour can be prevented by the "Stage Setup Filter". If you go to"Sys Settings, General, Stage Set Filter" you will find the parameter "Tempo". Switch it to "On". This prevents the tempo been changed if you select a different stage setup.

I expect that Casio will impove that, so that Tempo will not change if the Stagesettings changes and a song plays at the same time.

If urgently demand renaming phrases and songs in the data editor. The naming on the keyboard is too circumstantial.

How can I save converted ZPH files from the Editor directly to the PC? It can be done by "Package Edit". But then you will get a Package file and not the ZPH, or ZSQ file to upload it to the forum. I will now use the way with storing it on the USB stick.

    Best greetings

    Ralf
