  1. Im not sure whats going on here with the G1 but I'm running SSEQ Electro D&B, I select Part 13 from the mixer gui and I'm unable to change or rather hear any change in the filter when using the knobs or drawbars.

I must be missing something as on my Yamaha DJX, it's as simple as pressing the Part Control button, selecting the bass key and filtering the bass with the cutoff/ribbon controls.

    Thanks.

As Scottym described you can turn on dsp on each instrument channels for the drums from 8 to 13 but it wont necessarily have effect on the dsp parameters especially when you switch instruments while playing SSEQ especially with solo synths, Cause you're probably running SSEQ solo and don't want that. If you want to change effects and parameters its best to do that in creating a performance patch you can do that by going into performance mode select the sequence you want set it up after that go to controllers and set to each knobs the desired function to manipulate save your performance patch and you can do all sort of things after worth to your new patch give it an awesome name to your desire. Once done believe me that patch going to expand doing more cool things as you figure out more.

  2. Quick check - in. Ive been working with the G1 unit, checking out the sounds , etc.

...successfully synced to the Boss dr 880 drum machine after a little trial and error.

In trying to create my own "step sequences" I seem to lose my drums* as I select the next drum "part" using the - and + push button.

I'm having better success in editing the preset step sequences then creating my own. followed the you tube tutorial by Mike Martin and still having difficulty (user error) I'm sure. The sounds themselves are suitable for my taste....although I am not a keyboard player ,(self taught) so just noodling around is a blast.

note* drm1 = kick drum --  drm 2 snare   --  drm3 is hat and so forth.

perhaps I should somehow de-activate the sliders, and stay with the default drm voices as I learn ..??

anyway i'll keep on it and see what happens.

You're right on track its the only way to figure out how it blends to you're taste of the music you want to create once you get accustomed to the drum.

Mind you that you sync to the boss you probably have to adjust manually which part you work on from the G1 step sequencer to match your boss try configuring a performance patch set up each zone drums etc and the midi.

I recommend using the G1 solely it has drumkits for any style of taste I use midi in performance mode to trigger a midi device or start a sequence from the G1.

  3. Just to clarify, are you asking about sending CC's/NRPN to the Casio from Reason, or vice versa?

Don't know if you've seen it, but there is an exhaustingly complete MIDI implementation guide you can download on Casio's site.

    http://support.casio.com/nl/manual/008/XW_G1_midi_NL.pdf

Exhaustively indeed I've tried to read midi but I end up in another place called zzZZZzz. Its an expert level manual and I'm not that.

  4. Only dance music makers and DJ will find the G1 after they collected a few classic synth for themselves and experimented with it for a while, I think they will appreciate the classic tendencies it also powers from within it's core. P1 has the same characteristics but more for the Vangelis and Jean synth music.

I think a video demo of the G1 controls could demonstrated in a studio recording rig its ability will probably turn people to the G1 for its control ability to fill or change a sequence on the fly all the Cz or Fz classic synth plus "Vintage" sampling rate sounds right out the box .

  5. That's because the other models are not new to the European market.

Casio is not "stooping" to anything....These models have not been available in the US market so they are indeed new to us.

what does stooping mean in this context actually ? , My english not so good I've translate it like bending something around like releasing a box office movie in America now and then a year later in Europe is that stooping?

  6. Remember that NAMM is not a public show. It is meant for music merchants. The primary goal of it is to show new musical instruments and products to dealers and get them to agree to sell your stuff. We're secondary. :)

Yes secondary "droool"  :P knowing what kinda new play things you're dealer going to deliver for you makes watching these show long for faster delivery I'ts how I still got this glitter and sparky look in my eyes for my synth imagine what would happen if I get my PX5S...or any other synth I'm panting even writing this. The hours I spend on youtube vids about those synths and keyboards like watching reruns of last night shows "I'm that kind of person  " never get enough of them then I'm at it to my own synths.

  7. I've read somewhere that the Korg Kronos beside having their own sound synthesis processor on board  also works with an Atom processor surprised me tho an Atom cpu I looked down on those chips purely of seeing them less then half the power they could deliver. I have a dual core in my smartphone If Casio add their custom sound synthesis chips with a few mobile cpu quad core they have a workstation capable design ditch the SD card slot add an CF card slot booya.

  8. Ah, thanks for the clarification.

After inquiring on the Privia forum, it seems like knob one is actually assigned to Hex Layer detune.

The effect sounds very nice for a simple detuning of parts, but if this is true, then maybe the XW-P1 is a better option for me.

I do like the sampling option in the G1.

Well I guess you could go for the P1 better sampled PCM tones and luscious hexlayer there is lots of room to create a wide field of sonic soundscaping.

Its different tho on the G1 this synth gives room to create  and interact, I mean they named it a Groove synth so its made to interact with every aspect of what its

    capable of to do.

The truth is I would like to have both the P1 and G1 but I'm driven driven and need value and impact so I chose the G1 only cause it has that

umph, A drumcomputer , A sampler and then you have this monophonic solo synth for a PHAT GROOVE fully customable you're not limited at the standard waves

available add you're own wicked sample slices. With that power under your finger the air will resonate so hard people to jump it was always Casio who delivered phat basses  :)

Customize synth and audio modelling is what the G1 does its fully custom able, It has the Back-to-Basic kinda thing the classic synth everyone wants, A Mellotron you want that bam it has mellotron a Juno you want that bam its there.

  9. There is no such capability in either model.

The XW's DSP chorus effect does have a "type" parameter with mono, stereo and "tri" options (probably a triangle modulating wave rather than sine, although one would hope that tri means three modulators!). There is also a global stereo chorus effect that you can use in place of a DSP effect (it's one or the other). But none of these sound to my ears like a multi-chorus.

Agreed that the sound of a multi-chorus is heavenly.

The G1 lets you program your own DSP effect its there you can assign your own parameters effects there are free slots for that I've not delved into that.

much to come in that menu.

Press the mixer button hold it you'll see the effect menu scroll down to page 3/3 and select dsp,

Enter the DSP select menu from there you go can edit/program your own DSP setting in a free user slot

Slots available are from U:0-0 up to U:9-9.

With a bit of tweaking of the DSP , EQ and Reverb could give this similar effect I agree one dsp is limited

still all these available effects can be costumed to you're own liking :)

    Cheers

  10. First off, as a prospective buyer, I happened across this video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r_xSxAvu3c

I think this is one of Mike Martin's Privia Pro patches(?).

    But, I have a question.

Upon viewing the video, it becomes obvious that the major contributing element to this sound is the chorus effect being modified with knob one.

And given that it sounds *alot* like a multi chorus effect, I am reasonably(?) assuming that this is not a generic chorus effect, but rather a specific multi chorus algorithm available only to the Privia Pro PX-5S.

If that is the case, then it is a shame, as it is precisely the kind of sound that I(and many others) would be looking to recreate with one of the XW models.

So, is there any chance that this is just a generic chorus algorithm common to the XW models as well?

If not, is there any chance of Casio porting over the multi chorus algorithm(I'm sure we would be willing to taking trading off some DSP power elsewhere, for being given the option to use it)?

Given that the XW's don't have a unison function, and the fact that stacked oscillators will never sound as good as unison, a multi chorus effect like this would the next best thing(in fact, the chorus in this video actually sounds better than the unison function integrated into a lot of synths).

And trust me, an external chorus or vst is NOT a solution, as a chorus of this quality is RARE(trust me, as I have looked - even Korg's  MDE-X Polysix Ensemble FX, and assorted Chorus effects don't come close) - the only chorus that sounds close is Roland's Hexa-chorus.

In short, I really like this chorus, but not enough to get a Privia Pro just for the sake of the chorus effect(the large keybed, and piano oriented theme is not what I am looking for - I am partial to either of the XW models).

    Any suggestions?

Well if what you're asking related to if the G1 can do that? seeing the question posted in the G1 thread. The PX5S is in a totally different league but you can have chorus effect on Tone's and control the level of Rate and Depth even changing the level of reverb if that what you want. Its also possible to program you're own dsp effect. If you want the chorus the PX5S have you shouldn't look no more and go for that its much more advanced cause you would set yourself in quiet a pickle if trying to emulate it on the XW.

  11. Salutations forum members or visitors I'm going to show how you can edit a PCM tone to your liking.

I've been using the G1 for quiet a while now mostly from the seven standard modes yes you've heard it

    right seven modes.

The modes I'm refering to are performance , tone(+solosynth +PCM +Costum PCM +Samples) and Step sequence

mode I count them like that as separate modules within the synth.

To get more familiar with the G1 I started out by creating my own performance mode patches arranging mixing

Solo synth and PCM tones adding reverb and or effects. I wasn't fond of the balance and solved that by assigning

ADSR, resonance , tremolo to the knobs so I could make the sounds a bit nicely. This way I could select to a few

tones which to be edited directly and which not.

Nice and all but still no satisfaction then I discovered tone editing for the PCM tones usually I would edit them in

performance mode with knob assignment but that has its limitation and becomes garbled you wont get out what you

    exactly want.

First a tiddly bit of where to.

The Solosynth preset starts from P:000 up to P:100

The PCM instrument preset starts at P:100 up to P:400

The Drumkits start from P:400 to P:419.

Now the Solosynth User tones are stored at U:000 up to U:100

The storage for the PCM instruments tones we are going to make are stored on U:100 its where the G1 points to first

free location where we will save our PCM patch.

    [selecting a patch to edit]

For this example I will use tone P:233 Distortion guitar, Press tone and use the scroll wheel to select this tone

or press the Preset/user button and dial in 233 will also bring the desired tone.

P:233 is a nice patch but a bit stale the knobs K1 to K4 adjust Cuttoff, Attack , Release and reverb on this patch.

What I do is finding a nice balanced sound to start every time I would select this patch by adjusting the knobs

the display shows which value's the knobs assign to have when you turn them to you're appropriate value.

Mine is Attack -64, Release +30, Cutoff -40. Write those value's down or remember them.

Now press the edit button if you're not familiar with the synth its the button under the performance button.

You'll will see a menu now on the display, You're now in E:PCM melody. If you're not in that menu select the

tone mode again select the tone P:233 and press edit.

[Navigating with the cursor control buttons]

On the right of the synth are the Exit, Enter and cursor  buttons. Exit will bring you back to the tone

selection mode. But we don't want that, Press the right cursor to see the selection available for this

patch it start with Atk.time on page 1/5 and ends with Cho.sends on page 5/5.

Now as you can see the first three features are present Atk.time for Attack; Rls.time for Release and Cuttof.

Use the cursor down button to  scroll to the respected feature and enter for each one you're desired  value.

    [saving the new patch]

Now that the value's are in I save what I have at this point. Press the write button the G1 now has selected

a new Tone to be saved and pointed to a free slot for this now you can save the Tone as Distortion guitar or give

it you're own cool name I gave my ACR distguitar. Press the cursor down button to select for renaming use the

scroll wheel for each character and press right cursor for the next one. You can navigate back and forth while

editing your own name when you finished press Enter select Yes.

Now your new patch is saved you can find it by going to Tone Mode and selecting User Tone with the preset/user

    button.

    [Adding effects]

To edit it more you can repeat the process what I did was giving the new guitar patch a vibrato when I hold and press

a key down the tone will gradually vibrate at the end.

    By going back to edit mode on the new user tone patch navigate down to change each setting in;

    Vib.type    [sIN]

    Vib.depth  [-30]

    Vib.Rate    [+30]

    Vib.delay   [+30]

    Oct.shift    [0]

    TouchSense [-20]

DSP [on] - DSP edit type 33:DstRef

Volume [110] - this one is nice cause now you directly control a fixed value for volume but you can change it in mixer.

    Rev.Send [000]-reverb

    Cho.Send [127]-chorus.

Press Write then Enter save it  yes, Now you have a new PCM tone to add in performance mode or as solo creating you're

own custom tones like this gives another dimensions to your patches.

Its even possible to give totally new effects to them by changing the vibrato value's vib.depth and vib.rate to -64 or create

a new dsp effect. Mind you the last one will effect also the other Tone in performance mode when DSP is selected on all

Tone will have the same DSP effect keep that in mind when you're doing arrangements.

I'm guessing the same is possible to do on the P1 no I'm sure of it.

If I left something out or forgot a detail please comment on that share you're feedback :).

    Enjoy.
