OK Brad I get your point. I know the px is sampled in 2 halves that don't perfectly match in the middle. I also now know that nothing can be done about it and I have now hit a nerve, but don't worry as will not be bothering you again. Regards, Stuart

Before you write us oldies off, please all try this experiment to show what we mean. Select a basic acoustic piano sound (the rock piano shows this best) and hit note G4 (in the centre of the keyboard) quite hard, then turn the pitch wheel down (if set to default) and hit G4 again, you will hear F4. Now hit G4 followed by hitting F4 and it should sound identical to when we used the pitch wheel and IT DOES. Next, follow the same routine, starting at F4. You will hear Eb4 with the pitch wheel, so when you press Eb4, it should sound identical, but IT DOESN’T. It has a different (brighter) tonal quality. This is the sound we talk of.

Casio know there is a change in tone from E4 downwards on Acoustic Pianos (and from Eb4 downwards on Hex P: 020 Mf Piano) and a visible waveform change. OK Casio, can it be done and how much will it cost me?

Hi, the only piano sound I've found that doesn't have the "bell like" tone is the Hex Layer Hex P: 20 Mf Piano (but it's a very thin sound). Like you, I have tried loads of options and I find that using really poor quality speakers and headphones, disguises the bell tone.

Hi Guys (Rocknrolldentist, Bobby Smith and tagama). Nice to know that I’m not alone hearing that bell sound. If Casio could do a keyboard workaround, so that the left hand half of the keyboard notes were the same tonal sound as the right hand notes, I would be a very happy man. The right hand side sounds brilliant from F4 upwards. I am working on a rock piano stage setting that has NO “bell like” sound in the middle. This is because the Hex Layer, Hex P: 020 Mf Piano, does not have the “bell like” sound. So - Zone 1: C- to Ab3 is Rock Piano P 01. Zone 2: A3 to E4 is Hex Mf Piano Hex P 020. Zone 3: F4 to G9 is Rock Piano P 01. The problem I have, is getting balances right, as there is a lot more expression on the Hex Piano and I don’t know how it can be changed. The other pianos seem to be set to max expression. If I set the volume balances, it will work for hammering, but not good for expressive play.

Well done Brad, you managed to hide the "bell like" sound on this one. Don't suppose you have any more acoustic pianos up your sleeve that started life as a Hex Layer.

I notice the Hex Layer piano has No "bell like" sound at all. Is it possible to make a credible acoustic piano using that as a base?

Thanks Maurix, I will try your suggestions. The acoustic piano I downloaded from here which has the least "bell like" sound, is the Nord2Grand. I don't know how he did it

Thanks for all you help guys, especially Brad for his patience with me (I must drive him mad) and Dave Weiser for a good logical explanation. I'm beginning to think that I must have have sensitive ears as my sister thinks the PX-5S sounds beautiful and can't hear bell like tones. So for now I, when I play at home, it will be with my old "cheapo" phones (which lower the bell sound for me) and when I get the chance, I will still try another 5S just to satisfy myself. Can someone explain why on acoustic pianos, the piano tone changes (from bell like to smooth) from E to F (above middle C) and on Hex layer p20 (Hex Mf Piano) tone changes (from bright to smooth) from Eb to E

Hi Joe I am using stage setting set-ups through the range, just using the 0-0 as an example to show that I mean all acoustic piano sounds. Cheers, Stuart

Sorry I meant when you select 0-0 Concert Grand, you see 00 GrPnoConcert at the bottom then hitting the + button to P01 Rock, P02 Studio, P03 Modern etc Thanks Brad

Just before I go Brad, are you saying that all 0-0 pianos, including the GM pianos are based on samples from the Steinway Model D

Hi BradMZ Sorry about that, yes I can hear the problem through my pc, by using my AKG phones instead of cheap pc speakers, but it is not as pronounced as through PX5-S Stuart

Hi BradMZ Yes that's right it does sound great recorded and played through pc. It's also strange why the "glass bell" syndrome only sounds when played out of the PX5-S on the six notes, B to E. From F upwards it sounds great again

I'm arranging to go to a Casio retail store (nearest is about 50 miles away) and take my AKG phones and listen to another PX5-S and see if it sounds the same as mine. I will then know if it is the Casio or my ears, where the problem lies. I want to use my time enjoying my music, not sorting out problems. If anyone else can hear the "glass bell like" sound around middle C, to be more specific B to E, on all the acoustic pianos please let me know.

Did as you said and it sounds the same. I don't have any recording device, so will have to borrow something. May take a few days, I can't get about as much these days (lung cancer, had lung removed). When I get recording device, you will need to talk me through the process of uploading the sound to the forum. Not very technical (age thing you know)

hi BradMZ, thanks for quick response. It makes the "glass bell" sound on every piano through the 00 range , including GM pianos, although less noticeable on GM Honky Tonk. I have just tried something. If I record to USB and play back through the PX-5S I get the glass bell sound, but if I play the USB recording through my pc or other devices it sounds beautiful. So do you think nothing can be done?

Hi Guys, I posted on 04 November (acoustic piano sounds). I sent my PX for repair and after 7 weeks I got a brand new replacement. I am now faced with my original problem, which was acoustic pianos sounding too "belly" in the mid range (really noticeable within half dozen notes or so around middle C area up to E). I thought it could be the old equipment I was using at home, so I bought AKG K240 mk2 phones and JBL LSR monitors, but the mid range "glass bell" sound is still there and now even more prominent. A couple of guitar friends listened through the PA system down at the club. One said it was only very minor and another said it was very "belly". A topic on this forum from Glenn(RocknRolldentist) mentioned it as a "bellish" sound and I also read a review where someone called it a "plastic" sound. It seems some hear it more than others. Does anyone know of a way to sort this problem, as I love the PX for its stage settings and other instruments and don't want to have to part with it, but the sound is driving me mad. Please help.

Hi Scott, it seems I will be having this repaired or replaced under warranty as I have it only had it 5 months. It seems strange that the change point is bang in the middle 44 keys left and 44 right. I would imagine there will be a technical electronic split there. I don't think it's worth making a recording, as you can emulate the fault most accurately, by playing GM1 in top 44keys and GM2 in lower 44 keys.
