  1. was trying to do w/o turning on Auto Accomp and muting/eventually replacing the individual parts. (oddly, the auto-accomp parts sound even w/o engaging the Auto Accomp button). my guess is you have to save each part as you go. (of course I'd gone "outside" of Pattern Sequencer to look for a sound, and that might have erased my efforts...I now realize I can change/select sounds from the Mixer). the manual is pretty laughable on this, and for that matter on all the sequencing functions. I know Casio has lots of products/features, but it would sure be nice to have a quick start tutorial on this stuff. sure, much of the board navigation is easy but there are a few tricky things and the documentation on those is sketchy at best. very grateful for this forum. after trying what I think are all the on-board options, here are a few of my frustrations: using Pattern Seq (as I said above), you have to work around the Auto Accomp and (I guess) save/store each time you add to the loop. using the regular MIDI recorder, it is very difficult to nail the timing of A B start points to create a loop. there are hiccups and hestitations almost every time -- not seamless a la w/ a looper. also the preparations for recording via this method are a bit cumbersome...esp for just a four-bar thing. using Pad Record, I could not keep a drum pattern going for reference while recording short phrases. I understand that's why there's the Chord Input option, but I'm often looking for just a sketchpad solution and don't want to stop and input stuff. happily the Audio Recorder works great! guess I'll start there and then either work w/ computer or a loop pedal as a sketchpad. it's a shame it can't be all internal since the board has much of what's needed. of course it's entirely possible I am still not getting the quick way to do this...please share if so. thanks
  2. thanks Brad, sure enough I got going.... only to encounter another problem: I managed to get drums/bass and keys down, and then while I was searching for a voice 3 part suddenly the loop I'd built disappeared, only kept the drums. is this a processor problem with my board or did I need to save after every overdub in the pattern? thanks
  3. Thanks Brad....was not doing that. now I'm trying to find out how to import a rhythm into pattern sequencer! incredibly, the only online tutorial for that feature is from Casio Indonesia. (!) I'm probably being dense but it seems to me this should not be so complicated! thanks TM
  4. I just lost an hour trying to get tracks to line up in the A-to-B points of the MIDI recorder. not easy. I'm wondering what the best way to capture a quick vamp idea might be on the MX x500. here's what I want to have: an internal drum pattern one percussion pad bass keyboard I'd like to do bass and keyboard separately. (otherwise I'd use the Audio recorder). if anyone could walk me through the steps, I'd be grateful. thanks! TM
  5. thanks for this file Ralph and Brad thanks for the heads up on the overwrite. so we all understand: if we back up the entire board (sounds/seq/registrations) to the USB stick, then install the above file, will we then be able to access and re-install the previous content so as to use it and the Ralph file at the same time? I've not done this before with this board -- do we have to do it item by item or is there a way to re-load everything? seems to me the Ralph file overwrites the registration memory so we'll have to re-do all the registrations....is that correct? thanks!
  6. I'm having trouble using the ALL ELEMENT button to change a drum kit in a style. it does not seem to retain the change from Variation 1 to the others.... thanks in advance for any and all help!
  7. Casiokid, I could not get it to load into the MZ
  8. Right....that's what Ralph walks through in the video. what's strange is that it is not expressedly stated in the manual that way -- I found it after looking up creating user rhythm. didn't even search that way initially because I didn't want to create a new rhythm, just wanted different drum tones. thanks for the help!
  9. thanks...yes, you are correct! found a Ralph Maten demo/tutorial explaining it:
  10. Anybody? I'm not finding this in manual or Tutorial guide....
  11. Stumped by this: I've set up a registration using an 8 beat basic style. I change the kit to EDM 1 in the Mixer and I get the style played on EDM 1 kit, so I save the registration right then. all good. but then if I switch to a different variation of the style, the sounds revert to the default kit! is there a way to save Kit changes in a registration setup? thanks! TM
  12. Thanks AlenK! That's what I'm doing....seems like a setup w/ 60s EP 2 and a rhodes or two, properly balanced, will get close to that WurliCruzr....trying tonight!
  13. I'm wondering if anyone has put together a nice Hex layer Wurli for the MXZ500.....I love Herbie's Rhodes in the hex presets and have experimented with creating a wurli but I must admit I've had not so good results. really wish there was a way to convert some of the hex stuff people have done for the Privias etc for use in the MX
  14. I've successfully sampled in a two-bar loop using the method described for working with Pads. I'd like to end the End time of the sample, but when I touch Sample Edit, all I get is the Start Time option, with Play button beneath it. I play and can hear the sample but there's no counter and no way to do any tweak to the End of the phrase. thanks in advance for any/all insights
  15. Thanks Brad! So upon startup, the only thing that's illuminated is the screen, correct?
  16. I'm trying to see if there's a problem with my (brand new) MZX. it boots up just fine and the screen works but there are no lights on the panel. the Start/Stop button lights when pressed, and the pad light goes on when pressed but that's it. is this normal? should I see some light near the buttons for selecting tone, rhythm, etc? thanks in advance for any insight on this!
  17. I didn't either and I'm curious about those rhythms! guess Casio only made them available in certain territories...are they posted in a download forum someplace?
  18. hi and thanks again for helping me w/ decision to purchase the MZ. wow. really musical! I'm going to import some styles from yamaha today, but I'm wondering if anyone can point me toward styles already optimized for MZ out there on the Internet. there was a mention here about a thumb drive w/ EDM styles (possibly created by Ralph Matin?) and perhaps someone has posted that somewhere? thanks in advance! TM
  19. Some people have said there was a USB stick w/ additional electronica styles included in the MZ box. not everyone got it though. does anyone know if this was some sort of special promotion or if Casio is making them available to other new customers? If Casio is serious about the middle/high end of arranger market they will be wise to get as many styles as possible in the hands of all users.... thanks again!
  20. so essentially anything you can sample via inputs can become the basis for a style (or at least a registration)? that's cool! thanks.....
  21. thanks to all for that. I'm also wondering: does anyone build registrations around say a four-bar sampled drum groove? my read of the manual suggests it's possible to do the following: sample a few rhythms, assign each to a pad select upper and lower voices from the panel designate a rhythm from the internal menu but instead of hitting Play and using it, rely on the sampled rhythms on the pads as the foundation save the whole thing as a registration. thanks again!
  22. hi....I'm considering this board, really like the sounds and the pad functionality. I'm wondering how easy it is to convert Yamaha styles to the Casio format, and how closely the converted result resembles the original. I use styles from the S950 and have a bunch that I'd want to port over to the MZ X.....oddly, tho I've seen a Vietnamese video that shows it is possible, there isn't much on this forum about this feature. thanks in advance for any/all insights.
