AlenK
It used to be the Korg M1. (Let's not quibble about the distinction between "synth" and "rompler" or we'll have to put a microscope to the XW's architecture!) I have heard that the Korg Triton may have surpassed it but I have never seen any numbers on the latter (besides which there were several Triton models). But that's moot. If the claim on the following web page is accurate then the best selling synth of all time may be a Casio:http://www.hollowsun.com/vintage/casio_vl1/Don't think the VL-1 qualifies as a synthesizer? It has a keyboard (of sorts). It produces synthesized sounds. You can edit one of its sounds. It even has a sequencer! Several well-known bands in the eighties used it and it was central to a hit song. Take that, Korg.
Percivale
Of course the VL-1 is a synthesizer Definition (from Wikipedia): A sound synthesizer (often abbreviated as "synthesizer" or "synth") is an electronic instrument capable of producing a wide range of sounds. Synthesizers may either imitate other instruments ("imitative synthesis") or generate new timbres. They can be played (controlled) via a variety of different input devices (including keyboards, music sequencers and instrument controllers). Synthesizers generate electric signals (waveforms), and can finally be converted to sound through loudspeakers orheadphones.
