Repeated "No Media" errors, even after firmware updates

About a year ago, I posted to this forum to say that I was having a problem with my PX-5S where it wouldn't boot up--instead it would display the "No Media" error. I followed Mike's advice and installed the 1.11 firmware update, which had just been released. That seemed to fix the problem, at least for a time.

But then recently I've again encountered this same problem, twice. The first time I reinstalled 1.11, which worked for that session. But then the next time I attempted to boot up the keyboard, day before yesterday, again I got the same error. This time I checked online, found the 1.12 update, and installed that. I ran Initialize All, rebooted, and all was well.

That's good, but really, the piano shouldn't be losing its firmware or its memory, or whatever setting controls this.

Does this behavior indicate some kind of a hardware issue? Perhaps a bad chip? It's very disconcerting when this happens at a practice, or worse, at a gig!

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Any thoughts or advice as to how I should proceed to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Thanks!

Saul

The first phase to is to eliminate everything in your control:

1. Use a fresh, new, to specifications (size, USB Ver) , USB drive that is formatted according to specifications

2. Make sure not to have any other electronic peripherals plugged into the PX-5s (no computer, no keyboards attached to MIDI or USB, no pedals, nothing coming in through the inputs

3. Make sure you are using an uncorrupted version of the firmware

4. Be sure that the power source your keyboard is plugged into is consistent and reliable (is the wall outlet loose, overburdened, circuit breakers are tripped often, etc. use a different outlet)

5. Make sure you are following all instructions to the letter that are provided by CASIO

The behavior of your keyboard is not correct.  If you continue to have problems after eliminating everything that's "on you" including the correct operation of the keyboard, it should still be under warranty and you should have some recourse.  Start with your retailer and see what options you have - maybe they'll exchange it without you having to do anything else, maybe not.  But that would be a good place to start if it keeps losing the ability to boot up.

Thanks, Choppin. Just to be on the safe side, I will update again, following each of your steps, although I've come darn close to what you suggest in the past. (The only exception I can think of is that I had a sustain pedal plugged in during the update. And the first time I had the problem, I had never previously updated the firmware.)

If I do encounter this problem again, I will definitely contact Guitar Center (where I bought the keyboard), or else go directly to Casio.

Thanks again,

Saul

Hey, sorry, one more perhaps dumb question. I see on Mike's FAQ page where he says that by registering your product you get an extra two years of warranty.

I think it's likely that I registered my keyboard when I bought it, but I can't find a link to anyplace to sign in and check and see if I have already registered it. Does such a site exist? Or should I just try registering it again and see if it comes up as already registered?

Thanks again!

I don't know of any confirmation except any page you got when you registered. However, if you've received one of those PX-5S decals, you definitely did!

Mike might be able to confirm your registration, but you'd need to provide him with your real name so he'd know what to look up.
