9 Drawbar Organ

I'm just getting into the Hammond B-3 sound and I was really impressed with the 9 Layer Organ that Jimmyjames posted back in July. I started looking into the way the drawbars worked and found some pretty good pages on the net that have some of the more popular registrations. Unfortunately, you need 9 drawbars to do that and the way they were tied together in the 9 Layer Organ didn't allow you to adjust all of them independently. So, I wanted to build something that would allow me to experiment. This really won't be a performance Stage Setting as much as a "play around with" Stage Setting that you can then solidify into different presets as you find them.
I really think that the key to pulling off a B-3 sound will be in presets because there aren't 30-some-odd drawbars on the PX-5S, for good reason! Here are some of the key notes you'll need to be aware of for this stage setting:
Drawbars: There are nine "drawbars". On the Hammond, they are organized this way: 16' 5 1/3' 8' 4' 2 2/3' 2' 1 3/5' 1 1/3' and 1'. They are on the PX-5S as follows, respectively: ModWheel, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, K1, K2.
Rotary effect: I like being able to experiment with these effects, so I moved them to K3.
K4: This controls the volume of the percussion. More on that below.
Pedal 1: This switches between 2nd percussion/slow decay and 3rd percussion/fast decay. I didn't think the 3rd harmonic sounded very nice when it suspended for too long, but you can adjust that as you like by editing the Stage Setting parameters.
Pedal 2: This turns the percussion on and off.
Percussion: I don't have a Hammond B-3 to sit next to, but I do have the internet! I found a good YouTube video in which some of the different sounds and registrations were isolated:
. With the laptop plugged into the audio in port of the PX-5S (good thinking, Casio!) I played this video through the same speaker as the keyboard. True to some of the other articles I read, the percussion sounded quite marimba-like, so that's on the percussion channel (zone 3).The way the original organs were built, percussion only happened for the first note struck in a legato passage, i.e. as long as any keys were held down, no more percussion sounded. To duplicate this effect, I created a phrase that plays one single note, and then dummy-fill (with expression controller values) to extend the phrase for awhile. Percussion will repeat if you hold down a note long enough, but at a tempo of 20, it hadn't repeated after 2 minutes of sounding a note. I think that'll do. If you want to bypass this effect and have percussion strike every note, regardless of other keys held down, simply turn off the arpeggio button. You will also need the OrganPercuss phrase file in slot 910 for this feature to work.

Detailed church organ

This is a 'real church' organ stagesetting.
The goal was to create a detailed church organ sound, with not only the full power of the organ, but also the subtleties from blending different stops or retracting them.
To get this to work you need to download the stagesetting 'CHURCHORG'
I have added the separate hex layers also, eventhough they aren't necessary in order to function.
The layers act as different organ stops.
You can see the organ stops as different sounds which can be added to each other. Add layers (stops) by pulling down the sliders!
The stops in this stagesetting:
S1 -- 16' principal
S2 -- 8' Flute
S3 -- 4' principal
-- the above first 3 stops are making a base layer
S4 -- 3' mixture
S5 -- 3' nazard
S6 -- 8' trumpet
-- these 3 above give a different blend to the mix
K4 -- 8' voix céleste (slightly detuned sound, to create a wavering human voice effect).
-- I consider the above stop a solo register, not to be used with all the rest together, which is why it's on knob4. However you can blend the voix céleste nice with the flute or the principals.
K1 -- controls the amount of reverb. If you play in a church you wouldn't need reverb (but then again you'd have a real church organ, no?)

Stops used here: in the beginning a tutti (everything except voix celeste), then only voix celeste, then flutes. Was a quick record, without any rehearsal, it shows at the end :-).

9 Layer Organ

This is a version of a nine tone layer organ similar to a B3 organ. I worked with a distinctly colored clone wheel to compare the PX-5S tones against. It will never be exact, but I think it is in the same zip code (perhaps the same ballpark if you use a Neo Vent) and could get you through a club gig if you don't have a clone wheel.
It contains two hex layers in Zones 1 and 2 and uses all twelve available layers. Only nine layers will sound on any one note presuming the sliders are all in the open position. Twelve layers are needed to simulate the duplicative use of the tone wheels in the B3 in the extreme ranges of the keyboard (see excerpt from Sound on Sound magazine Hugh Robjohns article below regarding this - link to full article http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul03/articles/hammondb3.asp). Zone 3 contains a truncated version of an organ tone to bring in the percussion. The key range of this Stage Setting is limited from C2 to C7 so keys above and below this level will be silent.
Slider/Knob settings:
Slider 1 controls the equivalent of the 16' and 8' drawbars.
Slider 2 controls the equivalent of the 4' and 2' drawbars.
Slider 3 controls the equivalent of the 5 1/3' and 2 2/3' drawbars.
Slider 4 controls the equivalent of the 1 3/5' drawbar.
Slider 5 controls the equivalent of the 1 1/3' drawbar.
Slider 6 controls the equivalent of the 1' drawbar.
Knob 1 controls the distortion level.
Knob 2 controls the vibrato/chorus setting.
Knob 3 controls 3rd percussion.
Knob 4 controls reverb.
Mod wheel and Pedal 1 toggle rotary speed.
"The New B3 has 96 digital tonewheel generators whereas the original B3 (and its siblings) had 91 active tonewheels (although there were actually 96 physical wheels in the generator, the unused ones being there to maintain the mechanical balance). However, if you do the sums, you'll find that there are actually 109 different tones required to produce nine harmonics on a 61-note keyboard. The original Hammonds overcame this problem by cheating — partial octaves were repeated at the top end of the keyboard, the repeating starting on different notes and octaves depending on the drawbar. On a stock B3 the 2-foot drawbar repeats only the top 'C' from the octave below, while the 1-foot drawbar repeats an octave and a half starting from the 'G', and the intermediate drawbars start repeating somewhere in between. This arrangement is usually referred to as 'fold-down' and it is an essential element of the subtle but characteristic tonal quality of the B3 and its siblings."

Indonesian Nights

The attached MP3 is a sample of the tune that inspired me to do this song. I didn't feel comfortable putting it in the "Song Ready" list, since the tune is fairly obscure. I was listening to Tony Monaco - Celebration when this track came on. Due to its lower tempo and cool sound, I wanted to try to duplicate it. This is my take on it, the organ sound is all from this stage setting on the PX-5S (explained below) and the backing track is from my android smartphone running IRealb.
This setting simulates a two-manual organ, with the split point being at middle-C. Here are the settings for each manual:
Lower - Registration 666000000 (sort of), rotary on (permanently)
Upper - Registration 008666000 (sort of), percussion 3rd harmonic, rotary can be turned on and off
The tweaky bits:
Mod wheel - overall volume
S1 - Overdrive
S2 - Percussion decay speed
S3 - Percussion volume
S4 - Lower manual volume
S5 - Upper manual volume
S6 - Reverb
K1 - Rotary Slow rate (not used, since I didn't include a way to switch between slow and fast)
K2 - Rotary Fast rate
K3 - Chorus/vibrato
K4 - Wet/Dry mix
Pedal 1 - Percussion on/off
Pedal 2 - Upper manual rotary on/off (This seems to take two taps the first time you use it in this stage setting, thereafter it functions normally. I haven't figured that one out yet.)
It should operate correctly without uploading the associated arpeggio needed to make the percussion envelope work properly. That still kinda weirds me out, but it seems to work.

hi all,
I am a new PX 5 owner and this is my preset for distorted hammond.
I try to emulate a famous Jon Lord setup: a hammond through a leslie (similar to "6 draw organ" stage settings), in parallel with a hammond thought a distorted guitar amp.
the volume of the "clean" hammond can't be changed, but with the mod wheel you can regulate (or mix) the volume of the "distorted" hammond from 0 to max.
Edit. I update the file: the clean organ is a little more overdrived and with more reverb because it seemed too weak. And with more percussion.
I adjust the eq of the distorted part to get more power sound, and make the highs less harsh.

Whiter Shade of Pale

Of course an organ upload section can't be complete without A Whiter Shade of Pale. The MP3 starts at the lead-in to the chorus where the glissando kicks in with the C3 chorus setting. Yes, I know that the background is kind of cheesy in the MP3, but I usually play with a group, so I wasn't too concerned with sequencing a better backup.
Here are the files this stage setting expects:
- The drum set (JasonSet1) in user area 20. This is optional, and originally I put the lower keyboard manual here instead.
- The phrase OrganPercuss in user area 910. This, too, is optional. It just lends to the Hammond sound by hitting the 2nd harmonic percussion only at the beginning of a legato phrase. Make sure to turn LOOP: On and write it back into slot 910. The load defaults to LOOP: Off, for some reason.
- The WhiterShade.ZPH for the drum track phrase in user area 911.
Other notes:
- The sliders 1-3 control relative volumes of the drum set, organ, and bass, respectively.
- Slider 6 controls reverb.
- Footswitch 1 turns the C3 rotary speaker option on (for the chorus).
- Footswitch 2 turns the drum phrase on.
- Knobs 1-4 control the equalizer.
It's a shame that you can't string DSPs together, because I really like the sound of the organ through the MStack amp simulator. It might be possible to replace the C3 rotary chorus with the native PX-5S chorus and still get a good sound while routing through the Distort/Amp simulator. That's left as an exercise to the user.

6 Draw OrgJJ

I think the 6 Draw organ that was added in the updated factory set was a good step forward in getting a pretty authentic raw clone wheel sound out of the PX-5S. Nonetheless, I have been struggling with the shrillness of the setting especially in the upper ranges. Using my red-colored clonewheel as a model, I have rebalanced the sound through a combination of key follow, relative drawbar maximum value and EQ adjustments to arrive at a sound that IMO is more balanced and definitely closer to that of my clonewheel. This file has the DSP Leslie off (DSP on [through]) as I use a Hammond Leslie outboard pedal as opposed to the internal sim. Other than that, everything else has the same function as the factory setting.

Anne's Pipe Organ

This is my version of a full pipe church organ. It uses two zones, but the second is only to make the lowest note of the keyboard play an A5 (for use - should you wish - in Bach's Tocatta in Dm... ;-) ) Please me know if you wish me to upload another version with just one zone...
I have gigged this sound a lot and it sounds amazing through a PA. Here is a demo (with my apologies to Bach....)

musette Accordion - Musette

I tried to recreate the classic sound of the "musette" accordion with a little detuning between the various reeds and enhancing the bass sound (lacking original sampling) with the help of a baritone sax, which being a reed instrument has a very similar.
On slider 5 there is a chorus and on 6 there is a reverber.

This Stage Setting attempts to improve upon the standard accordion tones that come with the PX5S. The underlying tone is a two-layer hex layer with the waves being the bandoneon samples. The knob/slider/modulation/pedal settings control the same functions as the ConcertGrand setting except:
Knob 1 controls layer detuning so that you can increase the "musette" or "wet" effect of the sound as it is commonly referred to in accordion lingo. (* See further note on this below)
The Mod Wheel adds tremolo as opposed to vibrato to better simulate what happens on the accordion when the bellows are manipulated to provide some modulation to a sustained sound...usually through a hand shaking motion.
All-in-all it is just not possible to incorporate all of the physical attributes of playing a real accordion into any tone or Stage Setting on the PX5S (or any other electronic keyboard I have played except the Roland V-Accordion of course), Nonetheless, I am hoping some of you can "squeeze" something useful out of this...(ugh...).
* For some reason, the Bandoneon waves seems to be sharp a fair amount so you will note if you dissect the tone settings, that I made a fine tuning adjustment. That may be a result of the detuning effect in the base waves themselves. When you detune the layers further with a Knob 1 adjustment, your ears may perceive the sound to be sharpening further. If you plan to use a detuned level more often, I would go in and further adjust the fine tune level...unless of course you like that bit of dissonance.

Stage Setting modification of 1-6: 3 way split on what was that Gospel Organ . I left the Gospel Organ sound alone except for the split then added Ride Bass on the low end up to C - Put your Rock Organ 5 an Oct higher in the next register for Left Hand comping From C - F# an Oct above it and Left Gospel Organ F# all the way to the end of the highest C on the keyboard. I was trying to add a little of sustain to the Bass on Zone 3 so I assigned Knob 1 of Zone 3 to release so that the user can adjust the amount of sustain or release if any on the Bass at times ..

This is my first attempt at an organ sound. It is not very good yet and I had no intention of sharing it in this state, but it was suggested that I post it in case anyone fancied having a go at tweaking it (or performing major surgery on it....). I like the basic sound, but it does not cut through a mix very well. Not sure why - but that is not surprising as I do not know what I am doing.....
I should mention that this sound is derived from an excellent 9 layer organ sound which was posted here by someone else. That sound is very good, but not the sound which I am looking for - if that makes sense...hence my efforts.

Squabble

Fiddling with the presets and watching the video in the notes of the 9 Drawbar Organ sound, I put together this keyboard split resembling the Squabble style registrations that Tony Monaco uses toward the end of the video. The left side of the keyboard (up to Bb5) represents the lower manual with registration 848000000 tuned up two octaves. The right side of the keyboard represents the upper manual with registration 800008888 and tuned down one octave. This allows a quite a bit of pitch overlap without going too high or too low.
The mod wheel controls the leslie speed, K2 controls the percussion volume, K3 controls the Vibrato/Chorus, and K4 controls the reverb. As in the 9 Drawbar Organ stage setting, Pedal1 toggles the 2nd-percussion-slow/3rd-percussion-fast, and Pedal2 turns percussion on and off.
I wish I could upload a sample of a tune played in this style, but I'm just learning and couldn't do it justice. Maybe a more experienced player could make a sample tune for it, should it end up being useful for someone.

I re-edited one of the organ sounds uploaded by a fellow member and easily came up with this killer organ that is reminiscent of something you might use forDeep Purple/MachineHead. Mess around with the DSP rotary effect by putting the BRAKE on and adding Vibrato/Chorus C1 for further effect...

I added portamento for version 3 since the sound is kinda synthy and reminds me of the XW solo synth.

Drawbars 8-1.ZPF

Here's my first upload effort -- a rock organ's lower manual.
I have a nice synth which nicely models single-manual clonewheel, which I play in a stack above my new PX-5S. The PX can't match that for organ, but I figured I would take a stab at at least providing a backup (lower) manual functionality.
The initial (scrapped for now) trick was going to be to put the first three drawbars on the first slider, since so many registrations build from 888 00 0000. Then I was going to mix a couple of higher footages -- 1-3/5' and 1-1/3' -- on the 5th slider. Getting the 16', 5-1/3', and 8' pitches to be operated by one slider is proving to be a challenge, due to limitations in the PX-5S synth architecture. I'll work on that one again another day...
It occurred to me though that Hammond spinets don't even use 16' and 5-1/3' bars on the lower manual, and that I have an extra octave of keys at the bottom anyway, so part way through the exercise I ditched the two lower drawbars. So for now I offer a fader-to-drawbar mapping of

1-3/5' plus 1-13' mixture
1' (because lots of organists like that whistle to be separate from the others)
Initially, the mixture played too many major chords when I played LH bass, so I used the wonderful per-hexlayer key mapping to get the 1-3/5' sound to disappear about 1 octave below middle C, and to get the quint stops and 1' to play a little more quietly. This allows some nice bright RH comping and non-dissonant LH bass.
This "lower manual" uses neither percussion nor C/V, but it does use Overdrive rotary. The Mod wheel is mapped to overdrive level. Pedal 2 is toggles fast/slow rotating speaker. There is an editable, but non-modifiable, key click.
