  1. Sweet Dreams Stage Setting (PX-5s)

If you use this stage setting, please let me know if you like it and how you used it.  I learn music by ear.  This stage setting started as I was learning how to play the song.  I carefully listened to left and right channels of the original recording, trying to hear how it was played.  Once I learned it well enough to play it myself,  I recorded it into the sequencer on the MZ-2000, then converted that recording into phrases for the PX-5S.  The rest of the work involved editing PX-5S tones until they sounded like the sounds heard in the original record.

I have recorded an Audio Demo of this. Click the download button to see it in the list of available downloads.

  2. Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds

Stage Setting for the song "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds.

A0-G#3 is piano, A3-A4 is choir, B4-A5 is the synth-string sound that lays underneath most of the song, and B5 on up is the sparkly synth sound used to accent the chorus.

Here's a quick-and-dirty demo showing where the sounds are. Please excuse the dirty pants and loud footswitch, I'm still in my work garb.

  3. 24K Magic - Bruno Mars (without intro sounds)

NOTE: No voicebox sound that is used in song intro was attempted here.

Octave 6: Arpeggio 16th notes (you must be play it though). The envelopes cuts off the notes quickly to get that mechanical arpeggiated sound, and it's also easier to play well.

Octave 5: Polysynth quasi brass shots.

Octave 3: String-Voicy, used for chords in middle verses.

  4. Treaure - Bruno Mars

Stage Setting for Bruno Mars "Treasure" song.

Top octave is a descending sweep (Will be revised soon, thanks to BradMZ who sent me instructions on creating filter sweeps that I'm working through).

2nd to top octave is the Pop-Bells (unsure what else to call it), it's that pop-glockenspiel that's been around since the 80's with lots of reverb/delay. Delay adjusted with slider 5, reverb with slider 6. This was a lot harder to program than I thought it would be. I thought this sound would already exist so I searched hard but couldn't find one.

Middle octave is that synth lead sound which is used for that 3 note rift in the chorus. Go to the LFO depth to adjust how much vibrato and the LFO delay for how soon it comes in.

Feel free to tweak and resubmit.

  5. We All Die Young

We All Die Young, in the style of Eden's Curse.

    Notes:
    * The pedal used is Pedal 1, this controls the sustain for the zones used during the verse of the song.
    * The Mod Wheel is used to fade up the sound, as it is in the recording.
    * Run the Mod Wheel up and then back to the Zero position before you start to play, so the PX-5S can detect it's position.
    * The highest C on the keyboard is used in conjunction with the Pitch Wheel to emulate the second guitar in the chorus.
    * The low synth in the far left section of the keyboard is used to fill out the sound during the guitar solo.

The band I play with has only one guitarist, so elements of this Stage Setting are geared towards filling in the role of the second guitar. If your group has a full complement of guitars then you can ignore the last two notes and reassign those zones as you like.

Here's a short video of myself demonstrating the Stage Setting against the recording. I fade out Eden's Curse here and there so you can hear the Stage Setting by itself.

    Enjoy!

    Ivan

  6. Uprising by Muse

Bottom two octaves are the bass synth (Zones 1 and 3). The rest of the keyboard is the lead (Zones 2 and 4).
Knob 4 is used to control the filter for the bass synth sound, so you can replicate the breakdowns where the bass goes soft and back to hard again. Recommend that you stay below the 50% point for the most authentic sound. Slider 1 is also programmed to the same filter but mapped to half the range, so you can use the whole range of the slider without fear of going too "treble-ey". I prefer to use the knob because it's easier to manipulate smoothly.

Both pedals are assigned to the same thing, which is the portamento on/off for the lead. (Momentary, so you have to hold the pedal down for the effect.)

Depending on your PA system you may want to tweak the sound for ultimate accuracy, also make sure your Mod wheel is all the way off!

Constructive feedback is always appreciated, enjoy!

  8. The Way

This is "the way" piano that people were trying to find. I took a look and it's a ModernGrnd tone.
In any case, I removed the pad in the background so you can just play the piano sound.

  10. ShutUpDance2

I was working on 'I Can't Feel My Face' (which I still haven't done, anyone?) using the 'Tom Sawyer' (BradMZ) stage setting, when I noticed with a little tweaking it would be close to the 'Shut Up..." solo sound. Thanks to Hammertom for the other "Shut Up.." patch.
-Make sure you use the Mod Wheel.
-Because of the portamento, hit the middle Db with zero volume before starting the solo.
-Left Hand is a pad for the rest of the song.
-Set the attacks (pitch, amp) to zero If you don't like the sliding (trying to imitate a monophonic Synth)..

  11. Wrecking Ball

This is my first attempt at preparing any stage setting. Thought I'd share for any who could use it. I didn't do a ton of editing on the sounds themselves but this is set up nicely for a live jam of this song.
There are three splits.. Going from the bottom up... lowest is the synthy opening sound with the delay set at 120 bpm (should be the tempo of original song). Next up is a pipe organ for the chorus, and above that are strings for both the chorus/bridge/2nd verse.
    Hope you find it useful!

  12. Star Wars Cantina Band

This is a stage setting for the Star Wars Cantina Band song.
It is not intended to be a replica of the instrumentation used in the film recording, but rather an attempt to capture the flavour of the piece which will work on both (Han) solo piano and in a (cantina) band.
It has a wah clav, steel drum & marimba mixed together on top and a synth bass on the bottom. I have gigged this song and this sound quite a bit and it tends to get a good reception. I hope you might like it. May the force be with you........ :-)

  13. Superstition

I now have a much better version of this, so felt I ought to replace my old, inferior one.
This stage setting is designed for use in a band and allows you to play both the clav and the horns on one keyboard. I have used the steely clav sound from the vintage keys selection and Brasssection mixed with a trumpet. I like the bite you get from the steely clav. I have added some portamento onto the brass section.
Better effects now also, I believe.
    Here is a sample:

  14. Crocodile Rock

This is my stage setting for Crocodile Rock., The keyboard is split into two, with a rock piano sound at the bottom and a saw sound at the top end for the distinctive Croc Rock riffs. This sound has worked quite well for me but I am always keen to make it better.
Any comments / suggestions / improvements extremely welcome.
Here is a demo of the sound:

  15. Gimme Gimme GImme

Stage setting for the famous opening riff to "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A man after midnight)" by Abba. Two hex layers & a piano/strings tone combined to create a suitably OTT sound. Also a bass sound.
Suggest that you invest in some white flares, a blonde wig and/or a large medallion before attempting to download this sound.
Here is a demo of the sound. Perhaps it might also be useful for other situations where a big distinctive sound is required.

  16. Nights in White Satin

This is my Stage setting for nights in white satin. I normally play it in a band without a guitar, so I sometimes play a simple piano accompaniment to the iconic strings riffs. The PX is divided into 3 zones: piano at the bottom, strings in the middle & flute at the top.
The challenge was to get the strings sounding right: neither too legato or too detached, and with the right amount of swell. What I have done has worked for me so far, but doubtless can be improved upon. Any suggestions/coments welcome!
I have recorded an audio file of the strings & flute for you to hear:

I will be pleased if this is of use to someone.

    Depeche Mode - Everything Counts
    OMD - Electricity
    OMD - Enola Gay
    Peter Schilling - Major Tom
Tears For Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World

    Hope you like them!

  19. Evil Woman

Stage setting for Evil Woman. Play distorted clavinet with left hand (lower register). Upper register is transposed rock piano and strings. Start with sliders 1,2,3 on zero. When break with phased string sound comes in, move slider 1,2,3 to maximum and play that bit, then move the sliders 1,2,3 back to zero for remaining verse and chorus.

  20. SwingTown

A stage setting for Steve Miller's Swingtown. Keyboard split with organ piano in lower register and synthesizer in upper. Use initially with slider 1 and 2 at lowest setting. With slider 1 and 2 at lowest setting the synthesizer is the nice "round" Moog sound, then move slider 1 and 2 to maximum and the "round" Moog sound is replaced with the buzzy vibrato synthesizer sound.

  21. Pick Up the Pieces

Stage setting for Pick up the Pieces. Good for band with one guitar player (playing rhythm bit) and no horn section. Lower register the plucked guitar sound, higher register is the horns. Might also be a nice setting to augment real horns.

  23. Uptown Funk - 4 splits

Uptown Funk stage setting I use for playing in a band (with horn section).
Octave 3 is the vocal Doo's. (added a bit of low as the best sounding octave was too high)
D3 is the 3 bar sweep. (took a long time but I managed without using portamento)
Octave 5-6 is the held synth brass with heavy Chorus. (couldn't get the chorus effect working that well)
G6 is the 1 beat sweep sound. (Very difficult to try and adjust it)
I play the G6 sweep on beat 3 then the chorus-horns with a Gsus7 right below it on beat 4 for those sections with the sweep into a horn shot.
First sound I've really worked on. Thanks to the Uptown 1.0 contributor as I built on that. Feel free to alter and repost. Thanks, Doug.
