Hello...

I hope this is in the right forum...

I want to play midi files with the Casio CT-X5000 and play along with the midi file...

Does anyone here know where I can download the best and preferably free midi files for the Casio CT-X5000...

And which midi files should I actually have for the keyboard.?

I have already downloaded midi files on various sites, but they do not all sound equally good...

So which midi files should I have GM, XG or XMf or other midi files...

So which files midi files sound good on the Casio CT-X5000 and where can I best download them.?

Mvg... Albert...

Just a few ideas to get you directed.

1) GM midi files will have tones set to the basic GM tone soundset-so these can play on anything that is designed for recognizing GM sounds-on the Casios, this will not always be the best tones, since many of the better pianos, organs, drums etc. will not be a part of the Gm soundset-will have different "bank change" numbers. You would have to study the midi "implementation" chart for the CTX to determine which numbers these bank change messages are-and you will have to reset these and save the GM midi files with software to the Casio bank change messages for each tone to get the better Casio tones to play.

2) "XG" is a designation for the Yamaha-specific "extended" GM sounds-meaning that it has been designed to recognize and play midi files using standard "GM" sounds, but also the better or optionally extended Yamaha tones such as used in the PSR series, Tyros and other Yamaha instruments to access those Yamaha tones specific to the "XG" arrangement of tones-so again, will not necessarily match your CTX tones-except for the standard "GM" tones-so similar to what will happen with GM tones. You would have to modify-again-the "bank change" messages for each Yamaha XG midi file to get it to sound at its best with the better CTX tones-it will play-but won't sound as good as if you are using the best CTX tones. I use the Yamaha "XGEdit" software to listen to and view these files with soundfonts on my computer, and to edit or modify-but again, are more designed for specific Yamaha keyboards rather than Casios.

3) I am not familiar with XMF files, but here is a description from the MMA about exactly what these are. Apparently these are standard midi files that will play, but also have audio clips and possibly tones as part of the file itself-I guess meaning that this file can be played as a "stand-alone" file-without the need for anything but a software program to play them, and again I am guessing will sound like a standard GM midi file, unless your software or keyboard can specifically recognize the additional content embedded in the file.

Seems like this is rather new, and hasn't been fully implemented yet except for mobile phones as far as I can find out.  And i am not sure what you would need to play these XMF files-sound to me like these files are a complete "wrapper" for what many DAWs already do-that is to synchronize audio and midi data tracks together-and are usually saved as a "project" depending on the software DAW-and are usually not compatible across different software platforms. If i save a project with midi data and audio files together as a complete musical arrangement-for example in Logic, Cubase. Ableton or similar, it will not load and play in Reaper or some other different DAW, it will not be compatible across different software DAWs. Seems to me that the XMF files are an attempt to solve that problem-an all-in-one solution for saving audio and midi files together in one "package" that would be compatible with all software DAW's. I don't think you even need the CTX or any keyboard to play these XMFs, maybe someone else here knows more about XMF's.

The only midi files designed specifically for the the CTX5000 might be those posted here by other Casio CTX5000 users/musicians. As far as other free midi files-if you do a Google search, you will find many "public domain" files available-usually in "GM" standard form-to conform to the set of basic tones that make up the general midi standard-for cross-compatibility playable on an any keyboard or software that includes the GM standard-which includes the CTX5000, and all newer Casios and many older. If you are just starting out regarding learning about midi files, it can be a very rewarding and interesting field in itself. Musicians have been posting midi files on the Internet for many years so it has become a vast musical resource-with varying levels of quality, depending upon who created the file in the first place.  II have hiuge collections of playable midi files-mostly jazz/classical. If you PM me here-i can put together a package of 100 or so-some are excellent, well done by professional players-not sepcificaly for your CTX, but I have loaded these into several newer Casios and sound very good, IMO. Took me a long time to find some of these-I think it might save you some time searching-and wil give you some idea of what is available-although even now I can't find many of these midi files anymore-it takes some searching to find websites that will provide quality midi files-and most will be "public domain'-so can be used by anyone for whatever you need these for-I use strictly for myself as a study tool. And since midi files are relatively small files-you could fits hundreds, thousands on one thumb drive.
