Effects questions

Recommended Posts

These are probably questions for MIke Martin but perhaps someone else has definitive knowledge.

I have the XW-P1. The diagram on page E-37 in ithe XW-P1 manual showing how the effects are structured surprises me. It shows the reverb being in parallel with the chorus, Normal DSP or solo-synth DSP effect (whichever is active). That can't be accurate given the presence of a ChoSendRev parameter (page E-38), which adjusts the amount of chorus that is sent to the reverb. So is reverb actually in series with chorus/DSP, following after it?

Speaking of ChoSendRev, if a Normal DSP or solo-synth DSP is active does this parameter adjust how much of the output of the DSP is sent to reverb? In other words, does it work regardless of whether chorus, Normal DSP or solo-synth DSP is active, despite its name? Same question about Cho.Send: Does it control how much of a given tone's sound is routed to the effects block even if DSP is active instead of chorus?

As it turns out the diagrams of the effects routings in the manual for Casio's WK-7500/CTK-7000 keyboards are much clearer. One diiagram shows that the DSP effect comes before reverb. But the other diagram shows that if chorus is active instead of DSP then chorus is in parallel with reverb. So this is different yet again. Or is it? Could it be that the XW synths have the same routings but they simply aren't described properly in the manual?

On a related note, according to the manual the XW series apparently supports only two types of reverb and one type of "system" chorus (not the chorus available in the Normal DSP, which has three types). But the spec pages on Casio's web site for the P1 and G1 claim 10 preset types of system reverb and five types of system chorus. Where are these presets? I can't find them. Coincidentally, those are the exact number of reverb and chorus presets specified for the WK-7500/CTK-7000. So, is the XW web site simply incorrect? If there are really only two types of reverb (1 and 2) how do these relate to the reverb names in the WK-7500/CTK-7000? For instance, is Type1 equivalent to "room" and Type 2 equivalent to "hall"?

If DSP is selected, the "ChorSendRev" parameter does not function.  It is not available at all.   That being said when the DSP effects are active the reverb is after the DSP effect.

Taking a quick look at that chart, it does not appear to be correct.

As for the reverbs, they're simply slight variations.  While the effects were derived from what was done in the WK-7500 I don't think they're identical as the XW is doing much more.
