The reason why digital recording from modern headphone jacks can sound much worse than the headphone itself is that a class D amp in that jack adds its own DAC/chopper frequency. Despite it is (should be, not in old Bontempis) above human hearing rage, it can badly mess up the ADC of a digital recording device or PC due to sampling theorem if it lacks a proper input filter to reject HF frequencies, which results in glassy/metallic intermodulation distortion.
