Splitting Keyboard

The PX-5S employs a multi zone programmable key range system rather than a basic split function.  This allows the creation of complex setups that go beyond what any split button can accomplish.

It's possible to create multiple splits, layers and overlaps either using the computer data editor program, or onboard stage setting editor.

Perhaps the quickest way is to simply recall one of the preset factory stage settings already programmed with a split like 6-0 Piano/A. Bass.  You can use this as a template to get started, swapping out Zone 1 (Z1)piano and Zone 2 (Z2) bass tones for whatever you desire. Use the zone + and - buttons to navigate different zones and change tones on either side of the split point.

To do it yourself from scratch with the onboard editor, start by turning on a zone for each tone you want to split or layer. After your zones are enabled and tones selected, press edit>stage setting>zone edit>mixer edit>key range low and high.  Define the low and high key range for each zone by pressing the num key button (blue lamp will turn on), then press the key desired.  The lamp will go dark when complete.  Repeat as necessary.  Use the zone + and buttons to switch zones while in this menu to configure other zones.  Exit to the main screen and press write stage setting and name it to save for future reference.  Hope this helps.

To see it done in a video by Mike Martin, go to time index 11:18 here....

I certainly appreciate your response; however, I would have liked to have more of a "cookbook" approach, especially when he attempted to explain "zone 2." He talked about it, but did not demonstrate how to use it. I am thinking that you would have to go back to where it stated the "Zone" menu. Is that correct?

I certainly appreciate all of the help you have given me; however, this is my issue:

I am attempting to have the grand piano in my left hand with the electric piano or guitar in my right hand. I go to Zone 1: Grand Piano is set. From the Mixer I press the plus sign to go to zone 2. Hear is where I have a problem,. I am unable to press the electric piano so it will play in the treble or right hand. It continue to play the grand piano.

Let's start over and make it very simple.  Most of the work is done for you this way.

1. Select preset stage setting 6-0 Piano/A.Bass to enable a split keyboard.  This should give you acoustic bass lower and a grand piano upper tone.

2. Press a tone button.  This will change the upper tone.

3. Press the Zone + button.  Press a tone button.  This will change the lower tone.

That's it.

Mr. Saucier,

Do you know of anyone in the Ormond Beach Daytona Beach area that could instruct me on this keyboard. I would be more than happy to pay for instructions as this has been a great challenge for me at the age of 85.

I recommend watching the videos by Mike Martin, starting with the back to basics video.  It will open up a new world.

Afterwards, continue to ask questions here and we will help.

To clarify about selecting stage settings....

Locate the bank button.  It is right of the display screen.  Number buttons are also right of the display screen.  The section of buttons is labeled in blue as "stage setting".  Press the bank button, then 6, then 0.  That will select stage setting 6-0.

Here is the back to basics video that explains everything.  Start with it.

Is it possible for you to create a cookbook list of exactly what I need to do, i.e.

1. Edit

2. go to zone 1

3. etc

I want to have the grand piano in my left hand

Electric Piano in my right to improvise

I must be missing a step because I am unable to produce zone 1 and 2 together.

Okay, the first step is recalling a stage setting.  This cannot be skipped.  It will be necessary. Have you been successful with pressing the "bank" button followed by the numbers "6" and "0" to recall the split Piano/Bass stage setting yet?

Once selected, the display will be as shown below.  You should see 6-0 Piano/A.Bass

Okay great!  You have successfully called up Stage Setting 6-0 Piano/A. Bass.  The upper line of the display is the name of the stage setting.

Now let's look at the bottom line of the display screen.  It reads "GrPno Mellow".   This is the name of the tone selected for Zone 1.   We know this by the indicator Z1 : ON.  This means Zone 1 is enabled.

When playing the keyboard with this stage setting, we notice Zone 1 is setup as the zone heard above the F key.

To change the tone in this zone to a different one, press one of the tone category buttons.  You will notice the lower line of the display will reflect the tone you have selected.

To scroll through tones in a given category, press the -/NO and +/YES buttons.

Hi Brad,

I was able to follow Mike's splitting of Zone 1 and 2; however, he did not go into how to set each zone with a separate instrument, i.e. piano in Zone 1 and Electric piano in zone 2. Can you go into that instruction or does Mike have a video for that as well?

I was able to follow. Can we proceed with having the piano in the bass and the electric piano in the treble?

Please review my previous post carefully for how to change the upper tone.  It is very important in order to proceed.  This will make things easier.  Next I'll cover changing the lower tone.
