Assign volume control to Hex Layer

Hi - my name is Carl

Love the 5S

Question:

I am altering Factory Preset 07 called "Ice Castles"

All Zones are "on"

ZONE 1

Hex layer that was originally programmed for this patch

It has 6 layers mapped to the 6 sliders

ZONE 2-  is "Piano Pad"

ZONE 3 - Grand Piano 00

ZONE 4 - Air Electric Piano

QUESTION:

I want to assign the overall volume of the hex layer to knob 4

while at the same time being able to retain individual control over the hex layers with the sliders

Can I do that?  If so, how?

THANK YOU!

placed the 5s in Zone 1 for Hex Layer and went into Common Edit

Accssed Knob 4 and set it to CC7 as directed

But this also sets all the other Zones to CC7

I suppose that is the purpose of Common Edit?

but I don't see how to access Knob 4 any other way

Q: What am I doing wrong?

You need to turn Knob 4 off in Zones 2, 3 and 4. Make sure you have selected Zone 1 (it is showing on the display) then do this:

1) Press the Edit button. Select 'Stage Setting' (enter) > 'Zone Edit' (enter) > 'Controller Edit' (enter). Scroll down to 'Knob 4 Enable'. Check that you are actually editing Zone 1 - it should show 'Z1' at the top of the display. Leave 'Knob 1 Enable' set to On.

2) Now change to the next zone (press the 'Zone/Part/Step/Track' '+' button. 'Z2' should now show at the top of the display. Set 'Knob 4 Enable' to Off (press the '-/No' button).

3) Repeat step 2 for the other two zones

4) Hit the 'Exit' button repeatedly until you are back at the main display.

That should do it.

Okay - actually - one more question...  could I use a volume pedal to control the volume of Zone 1 ?

and I if so, how do I do that?

Right now I have a foot pedal connected to the pedal 2 input which I use on a completely different stage setting for individual sustain of Zone 2.  If I plug a volume pedal in pedal 2 jack, I lose the sustain pedal type of function I assume

Is there some kind of pedal assembly I can use that will give me both volume and sustain options on pedal input 2

THANKS,

Carl

Ebonivor is correct.  The 5s doesn't directly support a traditional expression pedal.  There's some workarounds for using a traditional expression pedal with the 5s.

Keep in mind that the switch type pedals on the 5s can trigger a preset envelope for doing volume swells or dips.  This can be useful and very adequate in some instances but in other scenarios the fixed envelope is to rigid for expressive playing.
