trying to create a song, I get '>end' under track edit.

I am reading the tutorial in the manual for creating a song on the px-5s

I've pressed song, incremented to song 1, pressed edit, and then pressed enter on 'track edit'.

The screen just reads '>end'. 

I'm supposed to be seeing a screen that lets me choose phrases.

That does happen on song 0, the sample song.

 

What am I doing wrong?

It starts with a blank track for you.  You have to insert phrases yourself.  Press the "insert" button.
