  3. Impressioni di settembre

    This is a stage setting created for playing Impressioni di settembre (Impressions of September) of PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi). It is composed of a layer PIANO + ANALOG PAD up to E4, and then continue with a MOOG leads.
    - 1 slider 1 controls the volume of the plan;
    - 2 slider controls the volume of the pad;
    - 3 slider controls the volume of lead;
    - 4 slider controls the chorus of lead;
    - 5 slider controls the delay of the lead;
    - 6 slider controls the reverb of the lead.
    - 1 wheel controls the cutoff of the pad;
    - 2 wheel controls the resonance of the pad;
    - 3 and 4 wheels control the midrange EQ.
    The pitch bend wheel is set on by an octave, and only controls the lead.
    Instead the sustain pedal controls only piano + pad.

  4. We Found Love ?? (PX-5S)

    MP3 Audio demo on the download page.
    This was a shot in the dark programming attempt at this song. I couldn't find any good info about the sounds used in it. This is my best guess. This is 2 zones and two custom tones in a stage setting. The zones are split in the middle.

  5. Walk of Life - Dire Straits

    Here is my attempt at Walk of Life by Dire Straits. It was easier than I thought it would be because of the VOX Continental organ stage setting from Mike Martin. Until I heard that, I had never associated that sound with that instrument. Thanks Mike!
    I made a couple of tweaks to the VOX, though. The first is that the drawbar organ layer was to mellow. I replaced that with a sawtooth. The other is that there wasn't enough "ping" on the attack, so I added the GM Thumb Piano, which has become a remarkably useful patch.
    On the FX, I realize that I have greatly underestimated the impact of delay, reverb, and chorus in the past, so that is added in there. However, I have some strange settings, so if you want an explanation, read on... We don't have a drummer so I usually have the percussion and the rest of the keys split between the left and right channels. Each channel goes out independently through a DI to the mixer. When I practice at home, though, I like to use the headphones and I like the channels balanced. To help with this, the drum pan is assigned to K1 and everything else to K2 (usually on the right channel). Unfortunately, the FX aren't usually channel-specific, so I have bleedover into one or the other channels or, in this case, I have the delay set to the right channel.
    The percussion loop is assigned to Pedal2. Load the phrase into slot 180. The other item of note is that I have a kick drum assigned to Pedal1. I wish there was a way to do this natively within the PX-5S, but for now, I'm running MIDI out from the PX-5S into a MIDI Event Processor then the MIDI out of the event processor back into the PX-5S. I use an unused CC message assigned to the pedal and the event processor turns it into a note-on/off message
    It sounds a little bare in the sample MP3, but when you get a band behind it, you're in business!
    Oh! I almost forgot! There is another keyboard part that I don't attempt to mimic here. If you listen to the VOX, you can hear a layer behind it which sounds like a sawtooth-ish sound playing harmony. I thought I'd add that as layers, but it changes with the chords, i.e. it's not just simply 3rds and 5ths. Because I run out of hands between the rock organ and the VOX, I didn't bother adding it in, instead opting to just add some harmony on the VOX.
    The rock organ isn't quite perfect, either, but because I use Zone 1 for percussion, I couldn't add the upper drawbar which you can hear in the original recording. It's close enough for rock 'n' roll, though!

  7. Every Breath You Take

    Well, the band wanted to do Every Breath You Take by the Police. The attached MP3 is me playing a sample of the keyboard parts and a percussion loop so you can get a feel for it. I add the crash and ride bell myself during the bridge.
    Our singer is pretty good... but he's not Sting, so we had to drop the key a touch. I recorded it, however, transposed back to the original key. The keyboard splits are arranged for the key I play with the band, so you may need to adjust the split points if you play a different key without transposing.
    The Stage Setting expects to see the percussion loop in slot 175.

    Sustain Pedal is active for Piano only.
    SS is transposed -1 as it's easier to play in A-minor.

  10. Mamma Mia

    Here's a stage setting for ABBA's song 'Mamma Mia'.
    4 Zones
    Zone 1: Grand Piano
    Zone 2: Bells
    Zone 3: Strings
    Zone 4: Hi Strings
    The song is played in D major.
    Zone 4 (Hi Strings in the chorus) is transposed +2.
    That means you play C but hear D.
    Zone 3 (Strings) is transposed +48 that allows me to play the figure at the lower end of the keyboard.
    Zone 2: a mixed sound (Hex Layer)
    Zone 1: Concert Grand Piano
    This stage setting is designed to cut through in a live situation with a band.
    I also recorded a video - quick & dirty (and in comfy trousers :-D )
    Watch the video to see where to play the different zones of the stage setting.
    The original song is running in parallel at very low volume as a guide track.

  11. 1901

    This Stage Setting can be used for the Phoenix song "1901"...one of my favorite songs of the past several years. It is a modified version of the 1.10 factory Stage Setting 7-7 "PolySynth" and retains all of the knob and slider settings from this Stage Setting.
    The setting contains three zones. The lowest zone is the sawtooth bass sound. The middle zone is the bell-like sound heard behind the rhythm guitar at the beginning of the song and during the choruses. The upper zone is the portamento synth sound heard at the end of the verses and sustained through the chorus (I love this sound...good thing 1.10 added poly portamento!). The sustain pedal only work for the upper zone so you can hold the portamento synth sound through the chorus while you play the sawtooth bass and bell sound below.
    My band doesn't play this song (we're not playing much of anything right now.. ). I would love to hear it if someone uses this to gig. Enjoy!

    A stage setting that sounds good for the Jimmy Buffet song Volcano. I took a standard setting and added/changed it. It's not exactly like the song, but sounds good anyway.

  13. Baba O'Reilly

    This is by no means complete but I figured I would post it since I probably won't finish it any time soon. It's for playing the signature arp pattern and piano on the song of the same name.
    2 arpeggiators are synced in this setup. The arp is in the upper octaves and piano is lower.
    Pressing and holding F6 will start the first arp pattern and sync the second one to the first. While continuing to hold F6, play D7 and E7 and so on (you'll have to learn the pattern) to sound the second arp and complete the pattern. The second arp is synced to the first so that it can fire it's notes in the offbeat of the first arp. This somewhat simulates the marimba repeat feature on the original Lowery organ. Unfortunately, the original organ seems to have many alternating zones. The PX5 doesn't have enough arps and zones to fully emulate the original organ so I rearranged the first arp pattern to make up for some of it.
    This stage setting would need to be accompanied by more stage settings containing other variations of the arp pattern. It get's a bit complicated so I have come to a standstill on this.

  14. Here I Go Again Stage Setting

    My attempt at the sounds for playing the intro to the 1987 recording of Here I Go Again by Whitesnake. Mike Martin tackled this song early on by request. I decided to start from scratch with my own interpretation of the sound. Piano is in the lowest octave.
    Demo of the sound here.

  15. Bizarre Love Triangle Stage Setting

    Audio demo of this is here: https://soundcloud.com/bradmz/updated-new-order-bizzare-love
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    This is a stage setting that can be used to play a portion of the song Bizzare Love Triangle by New Order. Load up all the files and hit any key in the low end to start the beat. You may want to set the arpeggiator to hold. The sound here was done with 2 phrases running under the arpeggiator. They are playing a custom drum set on Z1 and a custom hexlayer on Z2. Zone 3 is a bell type sound for playing a melody in the middle section if you wish. Zone 4 is the signature synth arpeggio for fill ins and is in the upper most range of the keyboard.
    Slider 1 - Bass on/off
    Slider 2 - synth arpeggio on/off
    Slider 3 - mute guitar arpeggio on/off
    NEWORDER is the stage setting
    BIZARRED is the drum phrase - place it into slot 137
    BIZZAREP is the hex layer phrase - place it into slot 138

  19. She Drives

    This is a stage setting for a song about a lady that drives some cannibals crazy. These cannibals were fine and young.
    The drum tone has been uploaded as well. It was in drum user 20 slot entitled "She Drives". The drum tone will be in zone 1 of the stage setting. It has been disabled in zone 1 of the stage setting since it will only be necessary for the phrase (also uploaded as "She Drives"). The common setting for this stage setting has a tempo setting of 109 (tap tempo set to original artist recording), and the phrase is the "She Drives" phrase attached and placed in user 108.
    There were two parts in creation of this stage setting that were particularly fun to tweak. The first was the snare pop modified on the drum file (pull up the tone from the data editor and you will note the DSP has been intentionally disabled on note E2 "power snare", and the note has been tweaked on the coarse and fine tune settings to provide the tightened tenor snare sound).
    The second challenge was to modify the zone 2 hex layer to provide a zone split within the hex layer. You will note the various key ranges on the 6 layers to facilitate this task. The layers within the hex tone are as follows:
    1) Gm Sweep Pad
    2) ElecPiano2 1
    3) Clean Guitar
    4) OverdriveGt2
    5) OverdriveGt2
    6) GMOverdrive2
    Sliders 1 through 6 control the layer volumes for each layer in the order as per above. The DSP was intentionally disabled on the first two layers since the effect is distortion. It took some adjustment of the Amp envelope on the GM Sweep Pad to come in faster on the sweep to match the original recording. It also required the 4 different guitar layers with modified Amp envelopes to more effectually cover the various gates and compression of the distorted guitar tracks throughout the song (especially the intro distortion guitar part). Using the volume sliders pulled down on slider 2 and slider 4 during the intro part allow you to cut those parts initially, but remember to boost them in time for the chorus!
    In conclusion, the stage setting is set up as follows:
    Zone 1: drums in zone 1 (only for the phrase with zone 1, disabled).
    Zone 2 (key range / Eb2 to B5): the hex layer is in zone 2 (split into two zones itself with a lower zone for the DX FM patch, no DSP, layered with the 4 guitars with varying amps and distortion, in addition to the upper zone GM sweep pad, no DSP).
    Zone 3 (key range / C-1 to D2): synth bass 3
    Zone 4 (key range / C6 to G9): clean guitar (a little delay for DSP just like the intro and recurring verses / octave guitar D)
    It really helps to pull this one up in the data editor to see all the splits and tweaks. This was a fun project showing just how versatile the PX-5S can be when used as a synth and workstation!

  20. Ob-la-di Ob-la-da - The Beatles

    We actually play this in F for the singer, so I had to transpose it down 7 semitones to get it into The Beatle's key for the attached MP3 sample. When I did this, I had to bump zones 3 and 4 up an octave in pitch. You'll have to fiddle with that, depending on what key you play it in.
    The saxes are set up strangely on zones 3 and 4. Originally, I thought I'd use two different tones and I wanted to split them into a lower and upper part. It turns out that the sound I settled on was the same tone (Baritone Sax) for both. You can turn off the arpeggiator and one of the zones (3 or 4) and get pretty much the same thing, without all the fancy business.

  21. Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty

    There really isn't a keyboard part to this tune, but when we cover it, I usually use an electric piano with overdrive.
    The most difficult part of it is picking out a believable harmonica. This isn't totally believable, but it works for this song. The Mod Wheel controls a wah effect to simulate cupping, with a slight downward pitch bend.
