Choppin
These will help you get by if you are on a tight budget Pretty straight forward. There's a free version Check out : http://www.anvilstudio.com/ A little more complicated, but I find it extremely useful for midi editing: http://openmidiproject.sourceforge.jp/Sekaiju_en.html If I ever get my Linux rig up and running again I'd definitely go back to using: http://rosegardenmusic.com/ And/Or http://www.muse-sequencer.org/ A very meaty program - linux again though : http://ardour.org/ Audio only: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Larry
You might also look at Reaper - http://www.reaper.fm/ I use the free version of Studio one - http://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one
Jokeyman123
Reaper is very nice-and pretty deep. I use it for Roland proprietary VS songfiles-it's the only program that recognizes these and "renders" them as a complete editable project in wav. I also use a strange little program called Jazz32 for midi editing which was originally designed for Linux and is open source (freeware) but is also a download at Sourceforge.net for Windows and has been around since Windoze 95. It looks pretty primitive but is actually very easy to use for midi and audio. Has low latency and very low CPU overhead (doesn't need a fast computer). Doesn't look like much, but actually is pretty deep if you need that. Very easy to create loops, edit midi data and combining audio and midi data is very simple. The help file has been ported to a separate website here and is the only support you will find for this now: http://jazzplusplus.sourceforge.net/manual/jazz_introduction.html Sourceforge.net download here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jazzplusplus/
maarkr
i've been a Reaper user for years. i also use Sonar X3 and Reason, and have owned Cubase and Sony Acid Pro. None of them are "easy" until you get used to using them and read the manual which is quite extensive, but they are all "powerful". Given the fact that Reaper is only $60, it is a bargain.
